Unity PolySpatial is a set of technologies from Unity Technologies that lets apps and games built in the Unity engine run on Apple's visionOS with rendering handled by RealityKit, the system renderer of the Apple Vision Pro. Unity describes the arrangement as apps that are "simulated with Unity, but rendered with RealityKit," which lets Unity content appear in visionOS windows and volumes alongside other apps in the Shared Space, or on its own in an immersive space.[1][2]
Apple and Unity announced the collaboration at WWDC in June 2023, alongside the Vision Pro itself. Unity opened a beta program on July 19, 2023 and declared visionOS support generally available on January 31, 2024, two days before the headset went on sale in the United States.[3][4][5][6] The technology ships as Unity packages (the core com.unity.polyspatial and the platform package com.unity.polyspatial.visionos, among others) and, as of September 2026, is still restricted to Unity Pro, Unity Enterprise and Unity Industry subscribers; the current package line is 3.2.2 for Unity 6.3 and newer.[2][7][8]
History
Announcement and beta (2023)
Apple introduced the Vision Pro and visionOS at WWDC on June 5, 2023, with a US price of $3,499 and availability "early next year."[9] During the conference Apple said it had formed a "deep partnership" with Unity to bring existing Unity 3D apps to the headset. UploadVR reported at the time that the integration layered Unity's engine on top of RealityKit through the new PolySpatial technology, that Unity apps in the Shared Space would have to use Shader Graph for all shaders and could not use post-processing, and that fully immersive VR apps would run in a Full Space with other apps hidden.[3] When Apple released the visionOS SDK on June 21, 2023 it stated that "starting next month" Unity developers would be able to port their apps to the device.[10]
Unity launched the visionOS beta program on July 19, 2023. Its press release described PolySpatial as technology integrated with the Unity editor that combines with "Apple's RealityKit-managed app rendering" so that Unity content has "a unified look and feel, alongside other apps in visionOS," and listed low-latency passthrough, high-resolution rendering, eye- and hand-based input, and direct preview from the editor to the headset among the capabilities. Mike Rockwell, Apple's vice president of the Vision Products Group, was quoted saying that "Unity-based apps and games run natively on Apple Vision Pro."[4] Unity's accompanying blog post named the recommended toolchain: Unity 2022 LTS (2022.3.5f1 or newer), the Universal Render Pipeline, the XR Interaction Toolkit, the XR Hands package, Shader Graph and the Input System, and said beta participants would be admitted "over the next few months."[11] TechCrunch reported that Unity admitted testers in waves and was deliberately not prioritizing AAA studios, and that Triband's What the Golf? was an early port built with the tools.[12] MacRumors added that the beta gave access to passthrough, dynamic foveated rendering, AR Foundation and the XR Interaction Toolkit.[13] The first package build, 0.0.1, is dated July 14, 2023 in the changelog.[8]
The beta coincided with Unity's September 2023 announcement of a per-install "runtime fee," which the company partly walked back within a week after developer objections. AppleInsider noted at the time that Unity was a featured Vision Pro development partner and argued that the episode would be a long-term problem for Apple.[14] On November 17, 2023, during Unite 2023, Unity announced that the PolySpatial beta was "now available to all Unity Pro, Enterprise, and Industry subscribers."[15] UploadVR's report on that release said the framework translated Unity rendering elements to RealityKit, that supported shaders were limited to Lit, Simple Lit and Complex Lit under URP and Standard under the Built-in pipeline with custom shaders only through Shader Graph, that developers could enter play mode directly on the headset instead of rebuilding, and that the required Unity Pro subscription cost $2,040 per year.[16] The Play to Device feature first appeared in package 0.6.1 on November 9, 2023.[8]
General availability (2024)
On January 31, 2024 Unity announced general availability of visionOS support in Unity 2022 LTS for Pro, Enterprise and Industry subscribers. The release included a project template with preconfigured settings and an in-editor tutorial, sample scenes, and Play to Device for live preview on the visionOS simulator or the headset without leaving the editor. Unity listed three kinds of experience: mixed reality in the Shared Space through PolySpatial, fully immersive experiences that replace the player's surroundings, and content that runs in a resizable 2D window.[5][17] Apps named in the announcement included LEGO Builder's Journey from Light Brick Studio (available on Vision Pro on February 2, 2024), an unannounced title from Resolution Games, AUDI Virtual Exhibit XR, the meditation app TRIPP and What the Golf?.[5] Apple Vision Pro went on sale in the United States on February 2, 2024, from $3,499.[6]
Unity 6 and visionOS 2 (2024-2025)
The 2.0 packages moved the platform to Unity 6. Package 2.0.4, dated September 25, 2024, raised the minimum editor to 6000.0.22f1, and on October 17, 2024 Unity declared official support for visionOS 2 on Unity 6. The release added multiple volumes, blend shapes and stereo render targets on the PolySpatial side, and supported visionOS 2 features such as Metal-based passthrough and resizable volumes.[8][18] The hybrid app mode, which lets an app switch between Metal and RealityKit rendering at run time, and support for more than one volume camera had been introduced in the 2.0.0-pre.9 build of July 24, 2024.[8] Release 2.1.2 (changelog date November 26, 2024; release notes posted December 3, 2024) added visionOS object tracking and head-pose updates over Play to Device.[19] Release 2.3.1 (changelog date May 12, 2025) added video URL loading for the VisionOSVideoComponent and game controller input support.[8]
visionOS 26 and Unity 6.3 (2025-2026)
Apple announced visionOS 26 in June 2025 with support for the PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers and the Logitech Muse stylus.[20] Unity's 2.4.3 packages, posted October 3, 2025, added visionOS 26 support for projects staying on Unity 6.0, along with bug fixes, and Unity has stated that no further feature releases were planned for that line.[21] The 3.0 line (first changelog entry 3.0.0 on September 30, 2025) targets Unity 6.3; on February 3, 2026 Unity announced that "the latest release of Unity's official support for visionOS 26 is now available for all Unity Pro, Enterprise and Industry subscribers on Unity 6.3 via the 3.0 packages," and told developers who wanted to stay on Unity 6.0 to keep using the 2.4 packages.[8][22] In a reply on the 2.4.3 thread the same day, Unity staff wrote: "We have no additional feature releases planned at the moment. In the immediate term, we are focused on platform stability by addressing bugs," and a second Unity employee added on February 4, 2026 that the team "can't quite prioritize visionOS the way we did at launch."[21] Later releases still added some features: 3.1.0 (February 20, 2026) added optimized Skinned Mesh Renderers for editor 6000.5.0a3 and newer, 3.2.0 (July 15, 2026) added audio streaming over Play to Device, and 3.2.2 (July 30, 2026) is the latest release as of September 2026.[8]
visionOS 27 and spatial accessories (2026)
At WWDC on June 8, 2026 Apple announced visionOS 27.[23] Apple's developer notes for the release state that "Unity has supported visionOS since the launch of Apple Vision Pro" and that "visionOS now supports spatial accessories in Unity apps and games," naming the Sony PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers as an example. Apple defines a spatial accessory as a device combining IR LEDs and an IMU for six-degrees-of-freedom tracking at up to 90 Hz, plus physical inputs such as buttons, touchpads and haptics; visionOS 27 also lets third parties build their own accessories, with reference hardware from DFRobot and MikroE due later in 2026.[24] In the WWDC26 session "Build next-generation experiences with visionOS 27," Apple said it had "released plugins to support spatial accessories such as the PSVR 2 Sense controller" for Unity apps, that windowed Unity games use RealityKit for native rendering while immersive Unity games can render through either RealityKit or the CompositorServices framework, and that a Unity Pro license is needed to bring a Unity game to visionOS; the engine plugins are published on Apple's GitHub page.[25] Apple's unityplugins repository, licensed under Apache-2.0, includes an Apple.SpatialController plugin for "visionOS spatial controller features" alongside its PHASE spatial-audio, GameKit, CoreHaptics and StoreKit plugins.[26] visionOS 27 was released on September 14, 2026, according to MIXED.[27]
How it works
Rendering model
Unity's platform documentation lists four ways to build for visionOS. In Metal rendering, "rendering and simulation are entirely managed by Unity," and the app runs fully immersive; this path uses the com.unity.xr.visionos package and does not involve PolySpatial. In RealityKit mode with PolySpatial, the app is "simulated with Unity, but rendered with RealityKit," so it can run in a visionOS window or volume in the Shared Space, or in an immersive space, next to content from other apps. A hybrid mode "combines the capabilities of the Metal and RealityKit app modes, allowing apps to switch between the two modes at runtime." Windowed apps run in a flat visionOS window and need no additional packages.[1][28] Unity's manual for Unity 6.5 lists com.unity.xr.visionos for fully immersive VR apps and com.unity.xr.visionos, com.unity.polyspatial.visionos and com.unity.polyspatial.xr for immersive mixed reality apps.[28]
Because RealityKit does the drawing, PolySpatial mirrors the Unity scene rather than rendering it. Unity's glossary describes the foundational PolySpatial package as the place "where initialization and all setup begins," which "performs change tracking and processing, serialization/deserialization" between the Unity simulation and the host renderer.[29] The platform overview says Unity's core features are "supported without modification" and that "meshes, materials, textures should work as expected," while "particles are subject to limitations" and "full screen post processing and decals are currently unsupported."[1] The requirements page states that RealityKit applications delegate rendering to the platform, which imposes "significant constraints on the graphics features" available: custom shaders must be written in Shader Graph, which is converted to MaterialX, and ShaderLab or hand-coded shaders are not supported. Supported standard shaders are Lit, Simple Lit and Unlit under URP, Standard and Standard (Specular) under the Built-in pipeline, plus shaders for sprites, UI and particles; projects must use linear color space.[30]
Volume camera
The Volume Camera component defines which part of the Unity scene is sent to visionOS and how it is displayed. In Unbounded mode "your entire Unity scene is shown in a visionOS Immersive Space." In Bounded mode "only content contained within the camera's bounding box appears inside your Volume Window," content is scaled to fit the window, objects that overlap the boundary are clipped on the GPU, and the user can resize the volume. Each volume camera references a Volume Camera Window Configuration asset that declares the output size in meters and resizing limits; these assets must be predeclared at build time and cannot be modified at run time, though an app can swap between them. A scene may have up to 255 bounded volume cameras and one unbounded camera, each rendering objects independently, but input events can only originate from one volume camera at a time.[31] The glossary defines a volume camera as consisting of a window configuration, an oriented bounding box and a culling mask.[29]
Play to Device
Play to Device is a preview tool that skips the usual build-and-deploy cycle. A Play to Device Host app is installed on the visionOS simulator or on an Apple Vision Pro; pressing Play in the Unity editor then shows the content on the host, rendered by RealityKit, without building an Xcode project. Changes made in the editor, including new game objects, inspector edits and recompiled shader graphs, are synchronized to the device in real time, and interactions on the device are sent back to the editor. Documented limitations include problems with the video component over a network, slower performance with render textures, limited volume-camera output sizes and no object tracking.[32] Package 2.0.4 capped the Play to Device frame rate at 45 fps by default, 2.1.2 added head-pose streaming and 3.2.0 added audio streaming.[8][19]
Requirements and licensing
Unity PolySpatial and visionOS support are "only available to Unity Pro, Unity Enterprise, and Unity Industry users," a restriction that has applied since the beta and remains in the 3.2.2 documentation.[2] The Unity 6.5 manual states the same limit for both the fully immersive (VR) and immersive (MR) app types; windowed apps are the exception and need no extra packages.[28] A community thread on Unity's forum from March 2024 asked whether the Pro-only restriction would outlast the beta; no Unity staff answered in that thread.[33] The Unity Industry page markets PolySpatial to automotive, energy, manufacturing, retail and engineering customers for product configurators, digital twins, collaboration and training.[34]
For the 3.2 packages Unity lists Unity 6.3 (6000.3.0f1 or newer) for Apple silicon, Xcode 16 (beta 1 or newer), the visionOS 2.0 SDK or newer and an Apple silicon Mac; an Apple Vision Pro is optional because the visionOS simulator in Xcode can stand in. Unity 6.0 through 6.2 projects use the 2.x packages and Unity 2022.3 (2022.3.18f1 or newer) uses the 1.x packages. Both the Universal Render Pipeline and the Built-in Render Pipeline are compatible, with URP recommended, in particular for foveated rendering and stereo render targets.[30]

Notable apps
LEGO Builder's Journey is the port Unity and Apple have both used as a showcase. According to Unity's case study, six developers at Copenhagen's Light Brick Studio (a 20-person studio) ported the game in under 100 days using URP, Shader Graph with MaterialX shaders, the PolySpatial Lighting Node and the Volume Camera in bounded mode, targeting 90 fps across 80 levels containing 60,353 bricks; Technical lead Mikkel Fredborg said: "As long as Unity supports a platform, we can make it run there."[35] The game launched on Vision Pro on February 2, 2024.[5] Apple's WWDC26 session again pointed to the game as a Unity title "that runs in a volume."[25] Other early Unity-built visionOS titles named in Unity's announcements include What the Golf? from Triband, an unannounced Resolution Games project, AUDI Virtual Exhibit XR and TRIPP; UploadVR reported that Rec Room was coming as a fully immersive Unity port.[4][5][16]
Reception
UploadVR and AppleInsider both focused on access and cost. UploadVR wrote in November 2023 that the Unity Pro requirement, at $2,040 per year on top of a $3,500 headset, would be a hurdle for independent developers and experimenters, and that shader and material support in the Shared Space was limited compared with normal Unity work.[16] AppleInsider argued in September 2023 that Unity's runtime-fee episode was a long-term problem for Apple because so many developers, including those building for Vision Pro, depend on the engine.[14] Studios quoted by Unity were positive about the workflow: Resolution Games CEO Tommy Palm said Unity's multiplatform support and spatial tools made development "straightforward," and Light Brick Studio's Mikkel Fredborg said Unity had been "very supportive in bringing their well known workflow to a completely new type of system."[5] On Unity's own forum, the February 2026 3.0 release drew complaints about sprite rendering failures, which one developer called "a massive deal breaker," alongside Unity's statement that the team was focused on stability rather than new features.[22][21]
