The Lightkeepers is a cooperative virtual reality action game developed by Spectral Games, a studio in Katowice, Poland,[1] for Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S. Set in the 1920s and drawing on the fiction of H. P. Lovecraft, it has players explore islands and gather resources by day, then defend a lighthouse against waves of monsters at night.[2][3]

The game was revealed at the VR Games Showcase on 13 November 2025 and released on the Meta Horizon Store on 10 September 2026 at US$19.99.[4][5][6] UploadVR described it as "combining elements of tower defense and extraction shooters with a Lovecraftian overtone".[7]

Gameplay

Players take the role of the Lightkeepers, whose task is to keep a lighthouse flame burning. During the day they explore uncharted islands, loot abandoned structures and search dungeons for treasure; at night they fight off monsters that come from the sea.[8][9] Solving puzzles on the islands helps players prepare for the night attacks.[2]

The game is built around contracts. Players choose an assignment, each with its own difficulty, duration and variables, and the main objective is to defend the lighthouse when night falls. Between defenses, players travel by boat to other islands to scavenge for materials used to fortify the lighthouse.[7] In UploadVR's hands-on, the boat was steered from an overhead viewpoint.[5] The same report said the game supports seated or standing play with smooth and snap turning, involves some climbing, and gives the lighthouse an optional zipline for moving between floors.[5] Spectral Games told UploadVR that the game does not use procedural generation for its locations and that each island is handcrafted with its own secrets, dungeons, loot and puzzles.[7] XR Source reported that the side locations visited from the lighthouse base are randomly selected.[3]

Pre-release coverage reported 20 weapons, including melee weapons, guns, machine guns, mines and grenades, as well as craftable explosives and tools.[7][3] Weapon upgrades and cosmetics can be purchased between contracts.[7] UploadVR described the inventory as body-mounted: the right hand draws a gun from the left shoulder and a melee weapon from the right shoulder, while the left hand takes a backpack from the left shoulder and a lamp from the right.[5] Weapons, gear and cosmetics unlock through a mix of in-game stat tracking, currency earned from runs and paid microtransactions, and runs come in several difficulty levels and lengths.[5]

Development

Spectral Games S.A. is based in Katowice and has existed since 2009. The company first made mobile apps and games and changed its strategy in 2021 to focus on virtual reality.[10][1] Its previous VR game was Medieval Dynasty New Settlement, a Quest game set in the universe of Render Cube's Medieval Dynasty.[10] The Lightkeepers is a new property from the studio.[4]

UploadVR's announcement article of November 2025 noted that it was unclear how many players the game supports.[2] In March 2026 a new trailer showed the game's cooperative survival combat.[7]

Publishing

Sources differ on the publisher. The VR Games Showcase entries republished by Road to VR in November 2025 and June 2026 list Meta as publisher.[4][8] In June 2026, Squido Studio, known for No More Rainbows and DigiGods, announced that it had teamed up with Spectral Games on The Lightkeepers; VR Today Magazine reported that the partnership was to publish the game, and UploadVR's showcase roundup also referred to Squido as the publisher.[11][12][13] The June showcase entry credited Spectral Games and Squido with unveiling the game's trailer.[8] Squido Studio is also listed as the publisher of Spectral Games' next project, the free-to-play dragon game Roar.[8]

Release

The release date of 10 September 2026 was announced at the VR Games Showcase on 23 June 2026, where UploadVR described the game as heading exclusively to Meta Quest.[13][9]

Platform Release date Price at launch
Meta Quest 3 10 September 2026[5][3] US$19.99[5]
Meta Quest 3S 10 September 2026[5][3] US$19.99[5]

As of 29 September 2026, Spectral Games' website lists the game as "OUT NOW on Meta Quest", and the Meta Horizon Store lists it at US$19.99 in the Shooter, Adventure, Action and Survival genres, with an age rating of 16+ for strong violence.[1][6]

Reception

In a pre-launch impressions piece, UploadVR's Mike Johnson wrote that "Everything works together in harmony just well enough to be satisfying, even if individually, nothing truly stands out as exceptional." He compared its explore-by-day, survive-by-night structure to Bootstrap Island and its waves of enemies to Drop Dead: The Cabin. He called the graphics "not great, a far cry from the jaw-dropping Bootstrap Island" and said combat "feels floaty and could benefit from stronger haptics and sound design on impact." He also advised players to "plan on a grindy long-term experience", comparing the amount of time players may spend with it to Knights of Fiona and After the Fall.[5]

As of 29 September 2026, the Meta Horizon Store showed a user rating of 4.7 out of 5 from 233 reviews.[6]
