Knights of Fiona is a virtual reality action role-playing game developed and published by CharacterBank, a studio based in Kyoto, Japan. The developer describes it as a full-scale Japanese role-playing game (JRPG) designed for VR.[1] Players take the role of knights sworn to Knight Commander Fiona in the land of Gallia and fight dragons with swords, bows and magic, alone or in online co-op parties of up to three players.[2][3]

The game was released on September 3, 2026 for Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S through the Meta Horizon Store, and for PC VR headsets through Steam, with cross-platform multiplayer between the two versions.[3] Mogura VR also lists Meta Quest Pro as compatible.[4] It uses a free-to-start model: the opening of the game can be played for free, and a paid Story Pass unlocks the full story.[4][5] Knights of Fiona is CharacterBank's follow-up to its 2022 VR game RUINSMAGUS.[1][6]

Gameplay

Knights of Fiona is set in Gallia, a land that has been at war for a hundred years against dragons that CharacterBank describes as the manifestation of hatred. In Gallia, thoughts become power, and Knight Commander Fiona has sworn a binding oath called a Gesh that turns hope into power.[2] Enemies include dragons and Formorian monsters born from lingering grudges.[3] The player creates a character who serves as one of Fiona's knights; in UploadVR's review, Fiona is described as a seventeen-year-old "chosen one".[7]

Players explore the hub city of Geogallia, take quests and interact with non-player characters, then enter arena battles and boss fights.[2][7] Weapon classes include bows, swords of different sizes and magic staffs. In a January 2026 preview, UploadVR described a card-based progression system in which quests award random cards that add passive abilities and upgrades to weapons; cards can be merged to raise weapon levels, and the chosen difficulty affects the rarity and power of the rewards.[8]

Every quest can be played in a party, either with computer-controlled companions or with online friends, and the hub supports proximity voice chat.[8] Online co-op supports up to three players, and multiplayer works across the Quest and SteamVR versions.[3] The game can be played seated or standing.[4] Movement is stick-based with an optional teleport mode, and it supports snap and smooth turning with adjustable angle and speed settings and a variable motion vignette.[7]

Story Pass

Mogura VR reported that the first chapter can be played for free.[4] The Story Pass add-on covers the full story, which is planned to span six chapters; Chapters 1-5 were available at launch, and Chapter 6 is scheduled for an update later in 2026.[3][9] UploadVR reported that the full story campaign and other features, such as community trading, require the Story Pass.[6] The Story Pass costs US$18.99 on Steam, and Mogura VR reported a price of 3,000 yen in Japan.[2][4] According to CharacterBank's launch announcement, the pass also gives access to all story-related features, including advanced quest difficulty. Players without the pass can instead buy 1-day (US$4.99) or 7-day (US$17.99) Story Tickets that allow all quests and trading for a limited time; the in-game shop also sells cosmetics and storage upgrades.[10]

Development

CharacterBank was founded in 2019 by Shuto Mikami and is based in Kyoto.[1] Its previous VR game, RUINSMAGUS, launched on July 7, 2022 for Meta Quest 2 and SteamVR, published by Mastiff.[11][12] CharacterBank announced Knights of Fiona on November 13, 2025, with a 2026 release planned for Meta Horizon and SteamVR.[1] Director Satoshi Shirai said the game was "the result of us closely evaluating everything we heard from players from the release of RUINSMAGUS", and that players had asked for more weapons, levels, NPCs and boss battles.[1] CharacterBank's later press materials credit the game's director as HOI.[3]

In a January 2026 interview with UploadVR, Mikami said that RUINSMAGUS had been "a full single-player experience", and that the studio's main goal with the new game was a large world that players could keep revisiting.[8] CharacterBank launched a Kickstarter campaign for the game in January 2026 to expand development beyond the team's initial concepts.[13] UploadVR reported that the Kickstarter raised more than 3.6 million yen against a goal of 1.5 million yen.[14] CharacterBank's launch press release said the combined Kickstarter and Campfire crowdfunding raised over 6 million yen from 815 backers, and that a playable build was shown at BitSummit PUNCH in Kyoto in May 2026.[3]

The free-to-start model and the English voice cast were the main reveals in the game's trailer at the VR Games Showcase in August 2026. On the game's Kickstarter page, CharacterBank said that after considering the limits of demos and "the current state of the VR industry", it saw the model as "the best path forward to bring as many players into Knights of Fiona while providing a robust online experience for everyone." The same page said Kickstarter backers would receive unrestricted access to all story content, including the battle missions and unlimited use of the trading tables, an exclusive in-game title, and a choice of an in-game storage upgrade or a one-day ticket to send to a friend.[5] The game has Japanese and English voice acting and Traditional and Simplified Chinese subtitles. Nob Ogasawara handled the English localization, and Fiona is voiced by Minami Tsuda in Japanese and Florence St. Leger in English.[3] An open beta ran from August 13 to 16, 2026 (Pacific Time).[14] CharacterBank said more than 1,600 players joined cross-platform beta sessions on Quest and SteamVR.[15]

Reception

UploadVR's Mike Johnson gave Knights of Fiona 3 out of 5 stars, reviewing the Steam version on a Meta Quest 3 through Virtual Desktop. He called it "a good, lengthy (by VR standards) JRPG experience" with about twelve hours of main story, and praised the music, the weapon loadout and party-building systems, and the world-building. He described the combat as "mostly a pedestrian affair with weightless weapons and standard block/dodge and attack mechanics", and criticized frequent loading screens between short arena missions and localization problems such as mismatched English subtitles, untranslated Japanese boss names and typos. His verdict was that the game "feels like it wants to serve two masters: the free-to-play crowd and those seeking a layered fantasy campaign."[7]
