Tentacular is a single-player virtual reality physics-based puzzle and action game developed by Firepunchd Games, a small studio in Berlin, Germany, and published by Devolver Digital. The player controls a giant, good-natured tentacle monster raised by the townsfolk of La Kalma, a remote island colony, and uses its two tentacles to build contraptions, move objects and help the islanders with jobs.[1][2]
The game was released on March 24, 2022, for Meta Quest 2 and for PC VR through Steam, and on February 22, 2023, for PlayStation VR2 on PlayStation 5.[3][4] It is also sold on the PICO store.[5] A free Island Builder Expansion with a level-creation sandbox and new side missions followed in July 2024.[6] Tentacular was a finalist for Immersive Reality Game of the Year at the 26th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards.[7]
Gameplay
Tentacular is played from the first-person view of the monster, which stands in the sea around La Kalma. The player's hands become the creature's tentacles. In the story, the monster works as the island's handyman while helping its human friends research a strange and powerful energy source, and it tries to learn where it came from and where it belongs.[8][9]
Levels are physics puzzles and action jobs: players stack and connect objects to build structures and contraptions, and the game also has side missions and time trials. Completing jobs unlocks construction materials for a sandbox mode.[9][8] At launch the developers described the game as having more than 50 puzzle and action levels and more than 10 hours of play; the current Steam and PlayStation Store listings advertise more than 60 puzzles.[2][1][4] UploadVR reported that an alien artifact grants the monster further powers and construction abilities, including magnets that stick elements together, and that the resulting structures are lopsided and wobbly.[3]
The tentacles are physics objects with their own weight and stiffness. In a 2022 interview feature on the Unity Blog, the developers explained that heavy objects make the tentacles bend under gravity and that touching damaging objects hurts the monster and makes the tentacles floppy. They said the stretching tentacles communicate weight, since objects otherwise feel very light in VR.[10] Menus are diegetic: the options screen is an interactive object with sliders and switches that the player moves with the tentacles, and it doubles as a soft tutorial. An accessibility setting changes tentacle size so that shorter players can reach objects.[10]
The game supports seated, standing and room-scale play.[2][5] The PlayStation VR2 version uses the headset's eye tracking so the player can interact with citizens by making eye contact, uses the adaptive triggers of the PS VR2 Sense controllers to convey the weight of grabbed objects, and adds headset vibration effects. Roomscale play on PS VR2 needs a play area of at least 2 m by 2 m.[9]
Development
Firepunchd Games UG is a Berlin micro studio founded in 2015, which Simon Cubasch runs with Luca Scaramuzzino.[11] According to the studio's factsheet, Cubasch had earlier founded the Berlin digital agency gosub communications in 1998, which was acquired by Edelman in 2011.[11] The press kit credits Scaramuzzino with idea, art and code; Cubasch with idea, game design and code; Almut Schwacke with music and audio; Dennis Kogel with writing; Rico Possienka with shaders and systems; and Alessandro Famà with FMOD audio work. It also credits Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg with funding.[2]
The Unity Blog feature, based on a Creator Spotlight stream on Twitch in which the two developers joined Unity at GDC 2022, traces the game to several game jams. In 2015 Firepunchd worked on a prototype called Hatchlings, an eight-player local co-op game in which insect-like creatures fight over eggs with grabbing appendages, and this became the basis of Tentacular. Berlin's game development community, including the indie collective Saftladen, gave the team input and resources, among them an early HTC Vive development kit.[10] Earlier concepts included a monster running a food stand, which ran into floating point errors, and a kaiju dating game called Life, Love, and Tentacles, which the team pitched successfully to the regional funding body Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg but dropped over scope concerns. The early prototypes used a top-down view before the team moved to eye level. Playtests showed that building things with the clumsy tentacles was more engaging than wrecking the town, and the developers built the story around a monster trying to fit into a world of tiny humans.[10]
The tentacle physics took more development time than anything else. Cubasch said the team did "three complete reworks between the initial prototype and shipping the game", because collisions with objects of very different mass, from 100 to 50,000 units, could make the physics "explode". An early version with a joint for every sucker proved too expensive when the team added standalone VR support. The team reduced the number of joints and rigid bodies until the tentacles had the behavior and performance it wanted, and tuned stiffness and floppiness through each joint's inertia tensors.[10] The game was made in Unity; all of its assets are managed in two large texture atlases, and Scaramuzzino wrote a custom shader so that object colors such as car paint did not each need their own texture.[10]
Release
Devolver Digital and Firepunchd revealed Tentacular in February 2022 for Oculus Quest and SteamVR with a spring 2022 window.[12] On March 17, 2022, the developer and publisher announced the March 24 release date.[3][8] The game launched the day after the developers' GDC stream with Unity.[10] On PlayStation, it was listed among the PS VR2 launch window titles in the PlayStation Blog's lineup of February 21, 2023, and the PlayStation Store lists its release date as February 22, 2023.[13][4]
| Platform | Release date | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Meta Quest 2 | March 24, 2022 | Standalone release[3] |
| SteamVR (Windows PC) | March 24, 2022 | Requires 64-bit Windows 10 and a GTX 970 or RX 480 class GPU at minimum[1] |
| PlayStation VR2 (PlayStation 5) | February 22, 2023 | Requires PS VR2 Sense controllers; single-player, offline play enabled[4] |
The Steam version supports ten interface languages, including English, French, German, Japanese, Korean and Simplified and Traditional Chinese.[1] The PICO Store lists support for the Pico Neo 3 Link, Pico 4, Pico 4 Pro, Pico 4 Ultra and Pico Space Pro.[5] The PlayStation version is rated ESRB Everyone 10+ for comic mischief and fantasy violence.[9]
Updates and expansion
| Date | Update | Content |
|---|---|---|
| June 29, 2022 | Comfort & Clarity update | Smooth turning, comfort blinders, multiple save slots, a slingshot for the rocket-throwing levels, and lower difficulty or added hints in many levels[14] |
| July 2024 | Island Builder Expansion (free) | Creation Glove sandbox for building islands from scratch, about two hours of side missions on La Kalma's sister island Salmoa, a new boss battle, an art contest and a Cheat Terminal[6][15] |
| December 17, 2024 | Tentacular Playgrounds (free Steam demo) | Sandbox without the story, 400 types of objects and nine developer-built islands in a "LaKalma Tour" mode[16][17] |
| December 20, 2024 | Steam Workshop support | Players can share islands and visit other players' creations[18] |
The developers said the Comfort & Clarity update responded to player complaints about the throwing mechanic in the rocket quests and to requests for smooth turning and comfort options against motion sickness.[14] Firepunchd said it spent about a year and a half on the Island Builder Expansion.[15] UploadVR reported the expansion launched on Quest and Steam and that a PICO or PS VR2 version had not been confirmed at that time.[6] The PlayStation Store listing for the PS VR2 version now advertises the expansion as free for all Tentacular owners.[4]
Reception
On Metacritic, the PC version has a score of 81 based on 9 critic reviews and the PlayStation 5 version a score of 76 based on 9 critic reviews.[19][20] OpenCritic lists a Top Critic Average of 80, with 88% of critics recommending the game.[21]
| Publication | Platform | Score |
|---|---|---|
| UploadVR | Meta Quest 2 | Recommended[22] |
| PlayStation Universe | PlayStation VR2 | 8.5/10[23] |
| Hardcore Gamer | PC | 4/5[21][20] |
| Push Square | PlayStation VR2 | 6/10[21][19] |
In its review of the Quest 2 version, UploadVR praised the tactile interaction, saying there is "always convincing elasticity, feedback and heft to everything you do", and the way levels introduce new concepts over time. It criticized long dialogue sequences that slowed the pace and found the missile-throwing challenges tedious.[22] Hardcore Gamer called the game "a crafty and unique physics puzzler with a wicked sense of humor" but found the conversations with non-player characters tiresome, including repeated hints and dialogue balloons that collided with scenery.[24] Reviewing the PS VR2 version, PlayStation Universe described it as one of the few PS VR2 titles "built to be played and enjoyed by absolutely everyone" and noted the grip feedback of the Sense controllers.[23]
The game was one of five finalists for Immersive Reality Game of the Year at the 26th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards, alongside Cosmonious High, Moss: Book II, Red Matter 2 and The Last Clockwinder.[7] Red Matter 2 won the category.[25]
