TeamViewer Frontline is an enterprise augmented reality software platform for frontline workers who work away from a desk, such as warehouse pickers, assembly workers and maintenance technicians. It delivers step-by-step work instructions, checklists and remote expert support to smart glasses, smartphones and tablets, so that workers can follow a process with their hands free.[1][2] The platform was created by Ubimax, a wearable computing company founded in Bremen, Germany, in 2014. TeamViewer announced the purchase of Ubimax on 15 July 2020, its first acquisition, and completed it in August 2020.[3][4]
Frontline is organized around use cases: vision picking in logistics, guided assembly and production, inspection and maintenance, augmented reality remote assistance, and 3D training. TeamViewer's 2021 and 2022 product pages sold the first four as xPick, xMake, xInspect and xAssist; its current product page lists them as Frontline Pick, Frontline Make, Frontline Inspect and Frontline Assist, together with Frontline Upskill for training.[5][6][7][8][2] TeamViewer later added mixed reality content from the acquired startup Viscopic, a certified SAP integration, and a partnership with Siemens for product lifecycle data.[9][10][11]
History
Ubimax
Ubimax was founded in 2014 in Bremen. Its founders were Hendrik Witt (chief executive), Jan Junker and Percy Stocker, president of the US subsidiary Ubimax Inc.[12] Its software, Frontline, displayed task instructions on smart glasses; TeamViewer's acquisition announcement described the Frontline suite as "like a toolbox for non-office workers" that showed instructions on smart glasses for tasks such as order picking in a warehouse.[13]
Logistics was the company's best-known application. In January 2015, FreightWaves reported that DHL, its customer Ricoh and Ubimax had tested "vision picking" with smart glasses in a warehouse in the Netherlands, with a reported 25 percent efficiency increase in picking.[14] In August 2017, DHL Supply Chain said it had completed international augmented reality pilots and was expanding Vision Picking to more warehouses, citing an average productivity improvement of 15 percent and halved onboarding and training times.[15] According to the same DHL announcement, Ubimax supplied the xPick software, while the hardware was Google Glass Enterprise Edition and Vuzix M100 and M300 glasses.[16]
In November 2019, Ubimax and Vuzix launched an "Everything-as-a-Service" bundle of Vuzix M400 smart glasses and Ubimax Frontline software for US$200 per month on a 24-month subscription, with no upfront cost. The offer was limited to the fourth quarter of 2019 and included templates for after-sales and order picking work that customers could edit in Frontline Creator.[17] In May 2020, the optician chain Fielmann invested in Ubimax in a Series B round. The partnership let employees of Ubimax customers have eye tests and fittings for smart glasses with corrective lenses at Fielmann's stores.[18]
Acquisition by TeamViewer
On 15 July 2020, TeamViewer announced that it would acquire 100 percent of Ubimax for EUR 136.5 million on a cash-free and debt-free basis. EUR 85.8 million was paid in cash and the rest in 1,070,931 new TeamViewer shares issued to the founders, which were subject to a three-year lock-up.[3][12] At the time Ubimax had more than 90 employees in Germany, the United States and Mexico, more than 200 enterprise customers, and billings of EUR 9.1 million for the twelve months to 30 June 2020.[3][12] The press release named Deutsche Post DHL, BMW and Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company as customers, and TeamViewer chief executive Oliver Steil called it the first transaction in the company's history.[19] TeamViewer's third-quarter statement reported that the transaction closed in August 2020.[4]
On 2 December 2020, TeamViewer released version 3.0 of TeamViewer Pilot, its existing AR remote support app. The update made Pilot compatible with the Frontline suite, giving Pilot users access to Frontline's workflow-driven guidance for step-by-step assembly and maintenance tasks, and added support for Microsoft HoloLens 2 and real-time annotations on head-mounted displays.[20] Pilot was later renamed TeamViewer Assist AR.[21]
Expansion, 2021 to 2026
TeamViewer bought two more AR software companies in 2021. In March it announced the acquisition of Upskill, a company founded in 2010 with offices in Tysons Corner, Virginia, and Austin, Texas, and maker of the Skylight platform for enterprise apps on wearable and mobile devices, whose customers included Boeing, Merck KGaA, the American Bureau of Shipping and Accenture.[22] On 11 May 2021 it announced the purchase of Viscopic, a Munich startup whose 3D visualization and mixed reality software ran on HoloLens, smartphones and tablets. Viscopic's customers included Audi, Siemens Energy and Deutsche Bahn, and TeamViewer said its products would be integrated into Frontline.[9]
On 17 September 2021, TeamViewer announced that TeamViewer Frontline Augmented Reality had passed SAP's certification as an SAP Endorsed App and was listed on the SAP Store, for integration with SAP systems in picking, assembly, quality assurance, maintenance and field service. The release named Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company and DB Schenker as customers using the AR tools with their SAP systems.[10]
On 26 July 2022, TeamViewer and Siemens Digital Industries Software announced a partnership to bring Frontline to Siemens' Teamcenter product lifecycle management software. The Frontline Spatial module placed holograms over real objects for users of mixed reality glasses such as HoloLens, and its no-code editor could create digital twins from computer-aided design data.[11] At Hannover Messe 2025, TeamViewer presented Frontline Spatial for industrial training, with GE Aerospace, a joint customer of TeamViewer and Siemens, delivering interactive digital twins of its commercial engines to technicians.[23] By July 2025 the Spatial offering had been renamed Frontline Upskill.[24]
On 3 June 2026, TeamViewer announced a partnership with Microsoft to add the Windows AI API for Video Super Resolution to Assist AR, which the release described as the remote assistance solution "within the TeamViewer Frontline suite". The feature sharpens video for remote experts when a technician's connection is weak. It was in closed beta at the time, with general availability planned for Copilot+ PCs.[25] A July 2026 TeamViewer release described a "Frontline 6" update that moved the core infrastructure to a stateless architecture and added built-in mobile device management and operational analytics. The same release said TeamViewer's AI assistant, Tia, now gives real-time suggestions during remote assistance calls based on earlier sessions, and that Siemens Teamcenter data can be imported into Frontline Upskill.[26]
Components
TeamViewer's 2021 product pages described Frontline as three layers: Frontline Creator, a drag-and-drop authoring tool for building AR workflow apps without programming; Frontline Command Center, a web tool for managing users, devices and tasks, viewing picking and workflow reports and placing support calls to workers; and Frontline Workplace, the app that runs on smart glasses, tablets and smartwatches and shows each instruction in the worker's field of view.[1] The current product page adds deployment in the cloud or on the customer's own servers and integration with warehouse management, enterprise resource planning and product lifecycle systems.[2]
| Use case | Name in 2021-2022 | Current name | Description (per TeamViewer) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Logistics and warehousing | xPick | Frontline Pick | "Pick-by-vision" for manual order picking, incoming and outgoing goods, inventory, sorting and sequencing; picks can be confirmed with barcode or RFID scanners worn on a ring or wristband[5] |
| Assembly and production | xMake | Frontline Make | "Make-by-vision" step-by-step assembly instructions with step confirmation by scales, voice commands, light sensors, push buttons or image recognition[6] |
| Inspection and maintenance | xInspect | Frontline Inspect | Checklists, diagrams and guided troubleshooting on smart glasses, with inspection reports created during the work[7] |
| Remote assistance | xAssist | Frontline Assist | Live video and audio from the worker's smart glasses or phone to a remote expert, who can add AR markers; guests outside the company can join a call[8] |
| Training and 3D work instructions | Frontline Spatial | Frontline Upskill | Holograms and 3D models anchored to real objects on HoloLens, smartphones or tablets, with group sessions and quizzes[21][24] |
In 2022 TeamViewer also offered AiStudio, a no-code add-on for training object recognition models (for example to check that a hard hat is worn, or that the right tool is used) and using them to confirm steps inside Frontline workflows.[27]
Supported devices
TeamViewer's requirements page for Frontline Workplace (last updated January 2026) lists Android 7.0 or later, iOS and iPadOS 15 or later, and Windows Holographic version 22H1. The smart glasses it names are the Vuzix M400 and Vuzix M4000 and the RealWear Navigator 500 series, Arc 3 and Navigator Z1; it also lists Zebra TC22/TC27, TC52/TC57 and TC72/TC77 mobile computers and the Zebra WS50 wearable. AR markers use ARKit on iOS and ARCore on Android.[28]
The 3D content tools have their own requirements. The editor runs on Windows 10 or 11, and the Workplace app for 3D tasks runs on iOS and iPadOS 17 and 18 (ARKit), Android 12 or later (ARCore) and Windows desktops; a separate capture app runs on iOS 18.[29] The Frontline 4.23 release notes list HoloLens 2, iOS, Android and a new desktop version among the platforms of this app, and added support for Inspectron borescope cameras on Android smart glasses and for ProGlove scanner display templates in Pick.[30]
Use and reception
TeamViewer publishes customer results for Frontline, including a 15 percent productivity increase at DHL Supply Chain, 99.99 percent picking accuracy at Coca-Cola HBC and 40 percent faster gearbox inspections at Airbus. These figures are TeamViewer's own case-study claims rather than independent measurements.[2] TeamViewer has also cited vision picking results at Volvo Group and Brack.Alltron, and shorter training times for temporary warehouse workers at Vandemoortele.[24]
In July 2025, TeamViewer reported that PAC had named it the only "best-in-class" vendor in the digital platforms for connected workers category of the PAC RADAR 2025 European industrial use-case ranking, the second year in a row it was ranked as a leader there.[24] In July 2026, Frost & Sullivan named TeamViewer a Visionary Leader and ranked it first for growth and innovation in its Frost Radar for AR-centric augmented connected worker platforms. Its analyst cited Frontline's coverage of training, assembly, quality assurance, maintenance and logistics, and partners including SAP, Siemens, Microsoft and Manhattan Associates.[26]
