SteamVR Collectibles

SteamVR Collectibles are 3D items that Valve grants to players in SteamVR Home, the home environment of SteamVR, based on their ownership of or playtime in participating VR games on Steam. The items are props and avatars, most of them based on characters and objects from those games, and players use them to decorate their SteamVR Home spaces or to change their avatar.[1][2]

Valve added the feature to SteamVR Home on 19 June 2017, about a month after the SteamVR Home beta launched, with items from twelve titles.[2][3] Further batches followed through October 2018, covering games such as Superhot VR, Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality, Fallout 4 VR, Skyrim VR and Moss.[4][5][6][7] Valve's developer documentation still describes the program and states that collectibles "need to be manually imported by Valve".[1]

How it works

According to Valve's Steamworks documentation, SteamVR Collectibles "are 3D items granted to players based on ownership and playtime of VR games". Developers can create custom items that drop to players for use as decoration in SteamVR Home environments. The items are imported manually by Valve, and developers who want to take part are asked to contact Valve through Steamworks.[1]

Valve's announcements describe two kinds of reward: props, which can be placed in a SteamVR Home environment, and avatars, which change how the player appears to others.[4][8] For the game-based sets, Valve said the items unlock through ownership of or playtime in the participating games.[2][7] UploadVR explained that players summon each figurine from a list of items, place it in their SteamVR Home space and can invite friends in to see the collection.[9] Road to VR noted that the first items were mostly static but that some were interactive, citing a farting Neko toy from Fantastic Contraption.[10]

Some sets used different rules. The Fallout 4 VR set, made with Bethesda Game Studios, grants Vault Boy figurines one at a time on a daily basis according to playtime; each player can unlock up to 10 of 20 possible figurines.[5] Other collectibles are hidden in Valve-made environments rather than tied to a game purchase, such as a mini-sentry turret from Team Fortress 2 found by exploring the Team Fortress 2 Supervillain Lair environment.[11]

History

Background

Valve launched the SteamVR Home beta on 18 May 2017 as a new home experience intended to be richer than the earlier SteamVR launch area. It added customizable environments, social rooms and avatar customization, and at launch additional avatars and wearables could already be earned by completing quests in other SteamVR environments.[12]

Launch

Valve announced SteamVR Collectibles on 19 June 2017, describing them as "items from other Steam titles that can be unlocked and used in SteamVR Home". The company said it had "partnered with a few VR game developers to create a set of items using characters and props from their titles", and that the first wave would be made available "based on ownership or playtime" of the listed games.[2] In the same post, Valve wrote that it thought collectibles would be "a fun way for players to show their love for a game - whether it be by decorating their place or by modifying their avatar", and called the first wave "just the beginning".[2] A second wave of eleven titles, including Superhot VR, Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality, Rec Room and Raw Data, followed on 5 July 2017.[4][9]

Later waves

Valve kept adding sets through 2017 and 2018, usually together with other SteamVR Home updates. The October 2017 Halloween update added collectibles for eleven more games, and the same SteamVR release added the Boxing Ring environment.[8][13] The November 2017 Mount Rainier update added items for Tilt Brush and Deserving Life.[14] In April 2018 the SteamVR release notes listed a Skyrim VR helmet prop, a House of Fables International Space Station prop and a Payday 2 avatar, and Valve made two Ready Player One themed props from Vive Creative Labs' Driftwood environment available to all players.[6][15] The June 2018 update added a Vive Pro headset avatar for Vive users and a Steam Summer Salien.[7][16] In October 2018 Valve added collectibles for its new Candy Emporium destination, telling players they "may even find a couple things to unlock" there.[17][18] SteamVR 1.7, released in September 2019, fixed a Thor's Hammer collectible that was not spawning.[19]

The table lists the sets that Valve named in its SteamVR announcements, using the game names as Valve wrote them.

Related SteamVR Home rewards

Collectibles are separate from SteamVR Home's game Trophies, which Valve introduced in a September 2017 SteamVR beta update. A Trophy represents a game in the player's library, upgrades as the player completes achievements and crafts badges for that game, and can be used to launch it.[20][13] SteamVR Home also has limited-time and quest rewards outside the collectibles program: for Halloween 2017, players could find masks borrowed from Team Fortress 2 in the weekly Geocaching quest.[8]

Reception

Road to VR's headline described the feature as an intriguing glimpse at the future of achievements and digital goods, and the article noted that Steam's real-money Community Market already listed items unlocked for SteamVR Home, such as an AirMech model.[10] UploadVR wrote that VR had not yet brought about a revolution in trophy or achievement systems, but that "SteamVR Collectibles are pretty close to that"; the outlet said it would like the system to recognize specific in-game achievements in the future.[9]

Current status

As of September 2026, the SteamVR page of Valve's Steamworks documentation still lists SteamVR Collectibles as a feature developers can use, with items imported manually by Valve.[1] SteamVR Home also remains part of SteamVR; the SteamVR 2.16 release in June 2026 fixed an issue in which SteamVR Home dropped frames on some systems.[21]
