Star Wars: Beyond Victory (full title Star Wars: Beyond Victory - A Mixed Reality Playset) is a single-player podracing adventure that combines virtual reality and mixed reality play. It was developed by Industrial Light & Magic's immersive entertainment studio, ILM Immersive, with Lucasfilm, and released on October 7, 2025 exclusively for the Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S headsets at a price of US $19.99 on the Meta Horizon Store.[1][2] The publisher of record is Disney Electronic Content.[2][3]
The player is Volo Bolus, a four-armed podracer pilot mentored by Sebulba, the podracing legend from Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. The original story is set around the time of Solo: A Star Wars Story, in the era Lucasfilm labels the Reign of the Empire.[4][5] The game has three modes: a narrative Adventure mode that alternates between full VR scenes and mixed reality racing, an Arcade mode that turns the player's room into a holotable-style racing arena viewed from above, and a Playset mode in which unlockable digital action figures and vehicles can be posed in the player's physical space.[1][6]
It follows the studio's virtual reality releases Vader Immortal and Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge; executive producer Alyssa Finley said the mixed reality format "blends the physical and digital worlds in a way that's unlike anything we've done before".[7][8] Critical reception was mixed: on Metacritic the game holds a score of 57 out of 100 from 12 reviews, with reviewers praising the animation, voice acting and story while criticizing the short campaign and the decision to present podracing as a top-down tabletop game rather than from the cockpit.[9][2][10]
Gameplay
Beyond Victory is played with the Quest Touch controllers and runs either seated or standing.[2][11] The game switches between two presentations. Story scenes and puzzle sections are first-person virtual reality, in the style of ILM's earlier Quest titles. Racing and overworld navigation take place in mixed reality, where the headset's passthrough view of the room is used as the backdrop for a miniature 3D game board, and the player controls a small podracer on that board from a bird's-eye view.[2][10][12] The board can be resized and repositioned to fit the room.[2] Meta's description of the Arcade mode is that it "transforms your physical space into a holotable-style racing arena where high-speed podraces are controlled from a top-down view".[1]
Adventure mode
The campaign has eight chapters and follows Volo Bolus from his garage, which is the hub between missions and where characters such as Sebulba visit him.[2][12] Between races the player repairs and maintains the podracer in the garage; Worthplaying's review noted that the game sometimes failed to recognize a repair part being fitted when the player moved between work points, leaving the objective incomplete.[13] In the VR sections, movement options include teleport, dash and smooth locomotion, with snap or smooth turning.[2] TechRadar counted three podraces and one vehicle chase in the campaign, and noted that every control is duplicated on both controllers, so the game can be played with a single controller.[11]
Races are controlled from above on the tabletop board: the left stick steers, the right trigger accelerates, one face button triggers a limited turbo boost and another fires weapons or performs tricks, with optional motion controls. Power-ups are scattered along the tracks, and a destroyed podracer respawns on the course, which Worthplaying compared to a kart racer.[13] Reviewers measured the campaign at roughly one to three hours: Road to VR and Worthplaying reported about two hours, UploadVR about three, and TechRadar about one.[2][13][10][11]
Arcade mode
Arcade mode isolates the racing. It has four tracks, all taken from the campaign, with unlockable racers, customizable loadouts and online leaderboards presented on the holotable. There is no multiplayer racing.[2][13][10]
Playset mode
Playset mode is a mixed reality sandbox. The player places, scales, clones and poses unlocked action figures, vehicles and set pieces in the room; the figures have articulated joints, accessories such as blasters snap into their hands, and vehicles can be driven around the room like remote-controlled toys.[13][10][12] Models scale from miniature up to human scale and can be combined with explosion effects to build static dioramas.[11] David RS Palumbo, the game's experience design lead, told No Proscenium that the team wanted to turn ILM's VR filmmaking tools into an interactive toybox rather than a machinima creation tool.[12] Playset mode requires the controllers; UploadVR noted the lack of hand tracking support as a limit on precision.[10]
Story and cast
The story follows Volo Bolus, an aspiring podracer who is taken under the wing of Sebulba, and the criminal underworld around the sport.[6][10] Supporting characters include Luuda, Sebulba's business partner; Deland Tyerell; Sornah; Grakkus the Hutt; and Fode and Trizz.[14][4][15] Road to VR described the plot as involving crime and Volo's struggle to balance his love of racing with loyalty to his friends.[2]
| Actor | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fin Argus | Volo Bolus | Protagonist[15] |
| Lewis MacLeod | Sebulba | Reprises the role from The Phantom Menace[4] |
| Greg Proops | Fode and Trizz | Reprises Fode from The Phantom Menace[4][15] |
| Bobby Moynihan | Grakkus the Hutt | [16] |
| Emilie Talbot | Sornah | [15] |
| Lilimar Hernandez | Cast member listed in the release announcement[4] |
Moynihan's performance for Grakkus was recorded with motion capture. He described sitting in an office chair on wheels that a crew member pushed around the stage while he performed the character's upper body, with ILM animators handling the Hutt's movement below.[16]
Development
The game was made by ILM Immersive, the Lucasfilm immersive entertainment studio founded in 2015 as ILMxLAB and renamed in 2023, whose earlier Star Wars releases include Vader Immortal and Tales from the Galaxy's Edge.[17][8] Jose Perez III directed the project and Alyssa Finley was executive producer; the team also included lead experience designer Steve McManus, production designer Stephen Zavala, CG supervisor Ronman Ng and writer Ross Beeley.[15][7]
Perez said the studio's goal was "to find new and exciting ways for players to experience Star Wars stories" and that focusing on mixed reality "opened several fascinating doors from an immersion standpoint".[5] He later told VFX Voice that the team experimented with ideas "that might be considered controversial, such as our approach to cutting the camera while watching these miniatures".[15] The animation team studied the podrace in The Phantom Menace for the vehicle movement, and assets were built from shared high-resolution models and textures so that characters and vehicles kept the same visual weight in VR scenes, on the holotable and in Playset mode.[15]
ILM's art department has described the character and vehicle design. Volo needed four arms for the game mechanics and a small stature for podracing; an early idea to make him a Nikto variant was dropped for a new species, and concept artist Casey Straka gave him cat-like spines that flatten when he is scared and flare when he is angry. His podracer, the TIE Bolt, combines TIE Bomber engines with TIE Interceptor wings and a cut-down, chariot-like cockpit.[18]
Release
ILM, Lucasfilm and Meta announced the game on March 27, 2025 as Star Wars: Beyond Victory - A Mixed Reality Playset, in development exclusively for Quest 3 and Quest 3S.[5][19][20] The first public hands-on demos ran at Star Wars Celebration Japan, held April 18-20, 2025 at the Makuhari Messe convention center, where ILM and Meta Quest set up more than a dozen demo stations alongside Vader Immortal and Tales from the Galaxy's Edge. Attendees could pick up an exclusive Marvel prequel comic written by Ethan Sacks, and ILM reported waits of up to three hours at the booth.[19][14][21]
The release date and a new trailer were announced on September 9, 2025, when the game became available to wishlist on the Horizon Store.[4][8][22] It launched on October 7, 2025.[1] In May 2026, Meta included it in a May the Fourth sale, sold individually at a discount or in a bundle with Vader Immortal and Tales from the Galaxy's Edge.[23]

Reception
On Metacritic the Meta Quest version has a score of 57 out of 100 based on 12 critic reviews, a "mixed or average" rating; two reviews were counted as positive, eight as mixed and two as negative.[9] On the Meta Horizon Store the game had a user rating of 3.8 out of 5 from 163 ratings as of September 2026.[24]

Road to VR's Scott Hayden gave the game 6.5 out of 10, with sub-scores of 4.5 for gameplay, 7 for immersion and 9 for comfort. He wrote that the VR sequences have "some of the medium's best animation" and compared the production values to Vader Immortal, but found the racing "a neat sideshow to the narrative" and the mixed reality overworld "painfully boring in comparison" to the VR scenes, writing that the "wow factor" of playing on his living room floor "is really doing the heavy lifting".[2] UploadVR's Don Hopper rated it 3 out of 5. He called the voice acting "exceptionally well done" and said the visual fidelity exceeded ILM's earlier Quest titles, but argued that the constant switching between VR and mixed reality "is a bit too much", that the tabletop view made it hard to see far enough ahead to plan turns, and that the racing "should have offered a fully immersive option".[10]
Worthplaying's Cody Medellin scored it 7.0 out of 10, praising the mix of VR and mixed reality and the story, while calling the whole package "fun but pretty short (even by VR standards)".[13] TechRadar's Hamish Hector was more negative, writing that the game is "far too short", that he finished it in about an hour, and that the podracing felt lifted from "a mediocre mobile game"; he singled out Playset mode as the one part he enjoyed and noted that the game is accessible by VR standards, playable entirely seated with teleport movement available.[11]
