Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge is a single-player virtual reality action-adventure shooter developed by ILMxLAB, Lucasfilm's immersive storytelling studio. It is set on the planet Batuu, on the outskirts of Black Spire Outpost, the location of the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge lands at Disney's theme parks; UploadVR's review noted that the game's Batuu sets match the parks.[1] The player is a droid repair technician who crash-lands on Batuu after a pirate attack and then takes on missions, including stories told by the cantina bartender Seezelslak that move the player to other eras of the Star Wars timeline.[2][3]
The game launched on November 19, 2020 on the Oculus Quest store at US$25.[3] A paid expansion, Last Call, followed on September 15, 2021, and an Enhanced Edition that integrates the expansion content into the game was a launch title for PlayStation VR2 on February 22, 2023.[4][5][6] It followed the studio's earlier Vader Immortal series on the same Oculus platform.[7]
Gameplay
The main campaign is a first-person shooter set in the Batuu wilderness, in which the player fights the Guavian Death Gang, a group of pirates led by the Quarren Tara Rashin, using single-handed blasters, thermal detonators and a jetpack.[2][3] Road to VR described each blaster as having "a charging slider on the top rail" that moves with every shot and must be pulled back to reload. The player also carries a multitool with interchangeable tips (a screwdriver, a flame torch and an electric spark) and can deploy three types of flying droids that attack enemies automatically.[8] Other tasks include scanning cargo and opening control panels, and a short-range telekinesis-like ability snaps items into the player's hand; UploadVR also noted that guns run out of shots after a few minutes, so players regularly swap them for weapons dropped by enemies.[1] Between missions the player can spend time in Seezelslak's cantina, where Engadget noted activities such as playing darts and talking to characters.[3]
Players can move by teleportation or by smooth artificial locomotion.[8] The PlayStation VR2 version supports sitting, standing and room-scale play, with a minimum play space of 2 m by 2 m for room-scale.[9]
Seezelslak's tales
Seezelslak, an Azumel bartender voiced by Bobby Moynihan, tells stories in which the player takes on a different character.[2] The first, "Temple of Darkness", runs about 15 minutes and casts the player as Ady Sun'Zee, a Jedi Padawan in the High Republic era, who meets Yoda and uses a lightsaber and Force powers.[3][8] The Enhanced Edition lists three unlockable tales: "Temple of Darkness", "The Sacred Garden" and "The Bounty of Boggs Triff".[9]
Plot and cast
The story takes place between the films The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.[7] After a pirate attack by the Guavian Death Gang, the technician crash-lands on Batuu, and the story continues on the outskirts of Black Spire Outpost.[2][3]
The cast includes original trilogy performers Anthony Daniels as C-3PO and Frank Oz as Yoda, along with Bobby Moynihan (Seezelslak), Debra Wilson (Tara Rashin), Karla Crome (Lens Kamo), Ellie Araiza (Ady Sun'Zee) and Rhys Darby (IG-88).[10][4] Matthew Wood voices Mubo, Cory Rouse voices Dok-Ondar, Jim Cummings voices Hondo Ohnaka and Daman Mills voices Lt. Gauge.[5]
Development
The game was developed by ILMxLAB in collaboration with Oculus Studios. UploadVR reported that it was announced in May 2020, with only the Oculus Quest confirmed as a platform.[7] ILMxLAB released the first reveal trailer on July 28, 2020.[2] A new trailer was shown during Facebook Connect on September 16, 2020, with a release window of the 2020 holiday season.[11] In October 2020 the release date was set for November 19, and a new trailer confirmed lightsaber gameplay in a Jedi temple section.[12]
At launch, producer Alyssa Finley told Engadget that more stories would arrive in 2021, presented as cantina conversations that let players inhabit new characters.[3] Jose Perez III is the game's director.[13] For Part II, ILMxLAB created the antiquities dealer Dok-Ondar by scanning the Audio-Animatronics figure from the theme parks and working with Walt Disney Imagineering; Cory Rouse, an Imagineer who voices the character in the parks, also voices him in the game.[13] The score was written by Bear McCreary, Joseph Trapanese and Danny Piccione.[8]
Last Call
ILMxLAB announced a second part on April 22, 2021, with Dok-Ondar as its first revealed character.[13] Released as Last Call on September 15, 2021, the expansion cost US$9.99 on its own, or US$34.99 for the full experience.[4] Players must finish the original story before starting it.[14]
In Last Call, Dok-Ondar sends the player to recover relics, and two new tales are added.[4] According to MIXED, the content consists of two mini-campaigns (an artifact hunt for Dok-Ondar and a mission to free Seezelslak from a First Order facility) and two new Seezelslak tales: one in which Ady Sun'Zee, now a Jedi Knight, teaches the Padawan Nooa, and an assassination mission as the droid IG-88.[6] New locations include Sardeevem Chasm and the Cavern of the Moons.[14] New characters include Hondo Ohnaka (Jim Cummings), Neeva (Anika Noni Rose), Lt. Gauge (Daman Mills), Boggs Triff (Darin DePaul) and IG-88 (Rhys Darby).[4]
Enhanced Edition
Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge - Enhanced Edition was announced for PlayStation VR2 on September 13, 2022.[10] ILMxLAB said the game had been rebuilt for the headset, with eye tracking, headset-based controller tracking, haptics in the controllers and headset, and 3D audio.[10] The PlayStation Store page lists optional headset vibration, Sense controller vibration and trigger effects.[9] In a hands-on preview, UploadVR described more detailed character models and noted that the adaptive triggers add "varying resistances when firing blasters".[15]

Reception
On OpenCritic the game has a Top Critic Average of 74 and is recommended by 54% of critics, from 24 reviews.[19] The PlayStation 5 Enhanced Edition has a Metacritic score of 73 out of 100 ("mixed or average"), based on 17 critic reviews.[20]
Road to VR scored the Quest launch version 6 out of 10. It praised the visuals and audio but called the enemies "bullet sponges" and wrote that "you blast until everything falls over, and walk to the next section with little variation"; its campaign took about three hours.[8] UploadVR gave it 3 out of 5 stars, criticizing it as "a linear corridor shooter full of waist-high cover points" while praising the comfort options and the Yoda segment, and concluded that it felt like "a preview of a much larger game that doesn't exist".[1]
IGN gave the Enhanced Edition 7 out of 10, calling it "an excellent way to showcase the best features" of PlayStation VR2 and "a worthy shooter" thanks to the added content, though it criticized the first chapter.[21] In a review updated for the Enhanced Edition, MIXED called the game "fragmented" but said that Last Call "brings a wealth of new content, characters, and locations".[6]
On the PlayStation Store, the Enhanced Edition was the fourth most-downloaded PlayStation VR2 game of 2023 in the United States and Canada and the sixth in Europe.[22] It topped the PlayStation VR2 download charts in both North America and Europe in April 2024; UploadVR suggested it benefited from sales ahead of Star Wars Day.[23]
