Skyworth Pancake 1Pro is a virtual reality head-mounted display announced in 2022. It is the top model of Skyworth's Pancake 1 series of standalone headsets, which the company introduced on 25 July 2022 in Shenzhen together with the Skyworth Pancake 1 and Skyworth Pancake 1C under its new PANCAKEXR brand.[1][2]
The 1Pro has the same 2280 x 2280 per-eye resolution as the Pancake 1. Skyworth added eye tracking, gesture recognition, color video see-through and a Mini-LED backlight for the LCD panels.[3] A May 2023 press release said the 1Pro would carry iris recognition alongside eye tracking, developed by Skyworth XR with WeChat Pay and 7invensun, so that wearers could unlock the headset, log in and pay by looking.[4]
At the announcement, Skyworth said the 1Pro would go on sale at the end of 2022 and did not give a price.[1][3] Reporting from August 2023 still described its eye tracking and iris recognition as features the headset "will" carry.[5] Skyworth's product page lists full specifications but no price.[6]
Announcement and release
Skyworth VR held its launch event in Shenzhen on 25 July 2022, where it introduced the PANCAKEXR brand and three headsets: the Pancake 1C, the Pancake 1 and the Pancake 1Pro.[1][2] The Pancake 1C and Pancake 1 opened for pre-order on 26 August 2022 at launch prices of 2,999 yuan and 3,999 yuan. The 1Pro was described as an upgraded Pancake 1 due at the end of the year, with its price to be announced later.[1][3] Skyworth Digital, the listed Skyworth company whose annual report covers the VR business, said in its 2022 annual report summary that the Pancake 1C was the model it had launched and sold in volume during 2022. The summary does not name the 1Pro.[7]
According to Skyworth VR CEO Li Wenquan, as reported by TMTPost, Skyworth VR had seven years of development history at the time of the launch. Its earlier headsets included the SKYWORTH V901 and S6, and TMTPost reported that it had shipped more than 100,000 units worldwide by the end of 2021.[3]
In May 2023, a press release published on Tencent News said Skyworth XR had upgraded the Pancake 1Pro and that the headset would carry iris recognition on top of eye tracking, developed with WeChat Pay and 7invensun. With it, a wearer would confirm their identity and complete a payment by scanning their iris instead of switching to a phone.[4] An August 2023 Sina VR article, based on an interview with Skyworth XR's domestic marketing general manager Bu Defa, repeated these plans and still described the eye tracking and iris recognition in the future tense.[5] Neither Skyworth nor the press sources cited here confirm a retail release date or a price for the 1Pro as of September 2026.
Design and hardware
Display and optics
The Pancake 1 series uses two 2.1-inch Fast-LCD panels with pancake lenses, which Skyworth calls an ultra-short-focus folded optical design. Skyworth said the optical module has about one quarter the volume of a traditional Fresnel lens design and is more than 50 percent thinner.[1][3] The 1Pro's panels have a resolution of 2280 x 2280 per eye at 1512 PPI and a refresh rate of 90 Hz.[2][6] TCL CSOT was reported as the exclusive supplier of the 2.1-inch, 1512 PPI Fast LCD panels for the Pancake 1 series.[8] The Mini-LED backlight is one of the features that distinguish the 1Pro from the Pancake 1.[2][3]
Launch coverage gave the Pancake 1 and 1C a field of view of 95 to 108 degrees; Skyworth's 1Pro product page lists 105 degrees.[1][6] The interpupillary distance adjusts continuously from 59 to 68 mm.[1][6] The headset also has built-in diopter adjustment for nearsighted users. Launch coverage gave the Pancake 1 series range as 0 to 500 degrees; the 1Pro product page lists 0 to 700 degrees per eye.[1][6]
Body and weight
The main unit weighs 189 g and measures 155 x 69.8 x 35 mm, according to Skyworth. The front unit flips up through 0 to 90 degrees, so the wearer can see the room without taking the headset off, and the face cushion attaches magnetically.[6][1] The May 2023 press release gave the complete headset's weight as 436 g and its thickness as 32 mm, and described it as the lightest and thinnest VR/MR headset on the market.[4] TMTPost described the Pancake 1 as placing the battery at the back of the head to balance the weight front to back.[3]
Processor, memory and battery
The headset uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 processor, with a Kryo 585 CPU at up to 3.1 GHz and an Adreno 650 GPU at up to 587 MHz.[6] Launch coverage listed 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage for all three Pancake 1 series models; the current product page lists 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage for the 1Pro.[2][6] The 5500 mAh battery supports QC3.0 fast charging.[1][6]
Cameras, tracking and input
According to the 2023 press material, the upgraded 1Pro has eight camera modules. Four are used for six degrees of freedom positional tracking, two are color cameras for mixed reality passthrough, and two are used for biometrics, meaning eye tracking and iris recognition.[4][5] Skyworth's product page lists four global shutter cameras and two RGB cameras, along with a 3-axis gyroscope and 3-axis accelerometer sampled at 1 kHz and a proximity sensor.[6]
At the series launch, Skyworth said its own VSLAM tracking system used four fisheye cameras and gave head tracking accuracy below 1 mm with latency under 2 ms, and a maximum play area of 10 x 10 m.[1] The product page lists dual 6DoF controllers, which Skyworth rates at under 10 mm positioning accuracy and under 20 ms latency, and hand tracking support.[6]
Audio and connectivity
The headset has built-in dual stereo speakers and dual microphones, and supports Type-C and Bluetooth earphones. It has Wi-Fi 6 on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands (2x2 MIMO), Bluetooth 5.0 and DP output.[6]
