Skyworth Pancake 1C is a virtual reality head-mounted display released in 2022. It is a standalone headset made by Skyworth VR, the VR and AR subsidiary of the Chinese electronics group Skyworth, and sold under the company's PANCAKEXR brand.[1] The headset uses pancake lenses and a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 processor, and it tracks the head and both controllers in six degrees of freedom.[1][2]
The Pancake 1C is the lower-resolution model of the Pancake 1 series. It has 1600x1600 pixels per eye, while the Skyworth Pancake 1 has 2280x2280 per eye; Skyworth said the three models in the series share their other hardware.[1] The 1C launched in China at CN¥2,999, and pre-orders opened on 26 August 2022.[3]
History
Skyworth VR presented the Pancake 1 series at a launch event in Shenzhen on 25 July 2022. At the same event it introduced PANCAKEXR as a new brand for its short-throw headsets.[1][4] Three models were shown: the Pancake 1C, the Pancake 1 and the Pancake 1Pro.[1] Skyworth VR head Li Wenquan (called general manager by Pandaily and CEO by Guokr) described the Pancake 1 as the company's second-generation short-throw headset.[4][1] Skyworth promoted the series as the world's first consumer-grade short-throw 6DoF standalone VR headsets.[1]
Skyworth announced a launch price of CN¥2,999 for the Pancake 1C and CN¥3,999 for the higher-resolution Pancake 1. It said the Pancake 1Pro, which adds eye tracking, gesture recognition, color passthrough and mini-LED backlighting, would follow at the end of 2022, with its price not yet announced.[5][6] Pandaily converted the series' starting price to US$444.55.[4]
Pre-orders for the Pancake 1C opened at midnight on 26 August 2022 through Skyworth VR's official store on JD.com.[3] As a launch promotion, Skyworth offered a full refund of the purchase price to buyers who checked in daily for 320 consecutive days.[3][1]
Design and hardware
Optics and display
The Pancake 1C uses folded pancake optics. Skyworth states that the optical module has about one quarter of the volume of a conventional Fresnel lens design and is more than 50 percent thinner. The headset unit weighs 189 g.[5][1] According to the product page, the headset unit measures 155 x 69.8 x 32 mm, and the complete headset weighs 436 g.[2]
The headset has two 2.1-inch Fast-LCD panels. On the 1C they run at 1600x1600 pixels per eye with a density of 1058 pixels per inch, at a refresh rate of 90 Hz.[5] The official product page gives the resolution as 3200x1600 for both eyes combined.[2] Figures for the field of view differ between sources: the product page lists 105°, while launch coverage gave a range of 95°-108° (IT Home) or 95°-105° (Guokr).[2][5][1]
For glasses wearers, the headset has built-in myopia adjustment from 0 to 500 degrees (0 to -5 diopters). The interpupillary distance adjusts steplessly from 59 to 68 mm.[2][3]
Form factor
The display unit flips up by 0-90°, so the wearer can look at the real surroundings without removing the headset. The battery sits at the back of the head strap to balance weight at the front and rear.[5][1] Skyworth said the face cushion uses hypoallergenic foam shaped for Asian faces to reduce light leakage.[5] The company also claimed the Pancake 1 series was the only headset on the market that could be worn with its magnetic face mask removed, allowing use in public places.[1]
Processor, memory and connectivity
The Pancake 1C runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2, which the product page describes as a 7 nm chip with a maximum clock speed of 2.84 GHz.[2] The product page lists 8 GB of LPDDR5 memory and 128 GB of storage.[2] IT Home's pre-sale report in August 2022 gave the configuration as 6 GB and 128 GB instead.[3]
The product page lists dual-band Wi-Fi with 2x2 MIMO (802.11 b/g/n/ax at 2.4 GHz and 802.11 a/n/ac/ax at 5 GHz), dual stereo speakers, and two microphones with one active by default.[2]
Tracking and controllers
Tracking is inside-out, with 6DoF tracking of the head and both hand controllers. Skyworth developed its own visual SLAM algorithm, which uses four fisheye cameras and a built-in IMU.[1][2] Skyworth quoted a head-tracking accuracy of under 1 mm, a latency under 2 ms, and a play-area boundary of up to 10 x 10 m.[5] For the controllers, it quoted an optical tracking range of 240° x 195°, a positioning accuracy under 10 mm and a latency under 20 ms.[1][6] The two controllers run on a pair of AA batteries.[2]
Battery
The headset has a 5500 mAh battery and supports QC 3.0 fast charging.[2][4]
Software and content
At launch, Skyworth presented a new version of its VR operating system, called SkyOS in launch coverage, with a VR assistant, a voice assistant, a multiplayer cinema and an app store.[4][1] The product page names the system SUI 5.0.[2]
Skyworth said more than 40 games would be available in its app store when the headset went on sale, with one or two new games added each week. Genres included first-person shooters, sports and rhythm games.[3][4] The headset supports wireless PC streaming of SteamVR games.[3][1] Video content included more than 200 panoramic 8K videos of 5A-rated Chinese tourist sites, as well as film and TV content from Skyworth's Coocaa platform. For the 1C, IT Home reported more than 3,000 titles from Coocaa, a multi-person cinema mode with a virtual 3,000-inch screen, and voice chat with online friends.[3][4]
