Skyworth (Chinese: 创维; full corporate name Skyworth Group Co., Ltd.) is a Chinese consumer electronics conglomerate, founded in 1988 in Shenzhen by Huang Hongsheng (also known as Stephen Wong). The group is best known as one of China's largest television makers, and its subsidiaries design, manufacture, and sell televisions, set-top boxes, display panels, home appliances, and other audio-visual products. Skyworth is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX: 751) and the Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE: 000810).[1][2] The company completed its IPO on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in April 2000, and by 2019 it employed more than 40,000 people worldwide and exported televisions to more than 100 countries and regions.[1][2]
Within the Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality industry, Skyworth is known through its dedicated subsidiary, Shenzhen Skyworth New World Technology Co., Ltd. (commonly branded Skyworth VR), which develops standalone VR headsets, system software, and content distribution. The unit was founded in May 2017 and built much of its early reputation on high-resolution standalone headsets aimed at video and cloud VR applications.[3][4]
History
Skyworth Group was established in 1988 by Huang Hongsheng, who started the business to serve China's rapidly growing demand for affordable color televisions during the country's economic reform era. The company grew into one of the leading domestic television brands and listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in April 2000.[1][2] Over the following decades it expanded well beyond televisions into set-top boxes, display modules, smart appliances, mobile phones, semiconductors, and, more recently, automotive electronics and electric vehicles through the separate Skyworth Auto venture.[1]
Skyworth entered the VR market through Shenzhen Skyworth New World Technology, founded in May 2017 as a wholly owned subsidiary focused on VR and AR products, operating systems, and content distribution. The company has described its team as drawing on engineers from firms such as Huawei and Tencent, giving it a background in display technology, tracking algorithms, and video codecs.[3] In April 2019, Skyworth was named among Huawei's VR OpenLab partners that launched the Dual-G Cloud VR Initiative, a program aimed at accelerating cloud-delivered VR over 5G networks.[5]
An early standalone headset from the subsidiary was the Skyworth V901, released in 2019 and also sold as the S1, a 4K standalone headset positioned for watching high-resolution video.[6][7] In 2022 the team shifted toward thin, lightweight designs built around Pancake lens optics with the Pancake series. For Western markets, the consumer launch was handled under a separate brand, Pancake XR, which described itself as originating from the Skyworth VR team.[8]
Technology
Skyworth's early standalone headsets emphasized very high display resolution for video playback rather than full positional gaming. The V901 used a single 4K LCD panel (3840 by 2160, roughly 1920 by 2160 per eye) running at 72 Hz with a 105-degree field of view, and was driven by a Samsung Exynos 8895 processor with 4 GB of RAM. Because it relied on one shared display, its interpupillary distance was fixed and it offered three degrees of freedom (rotational tracking only) rather than full room-scale tracking.[6] Skyworth also promoted 8K hardware video decoding and cloud VR streaming as a way to deliver high-resolution content over 5G networks, in line with its participation in Huawei's cloud VR initiative.[6][5]
With the Pancake series, Skyworth moved to compact pancake optics that fold the light path to shrink headset depth and weight. The Pancake 1 pairs dual 2.1-inch fast-switching LCD panels at 2,280 by 2,280 pixels per eye (a combined 4,560 by 2,280) with a 90 Hz refresh rate, a 105-degree field of view, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 chipset with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. The headset weighs about 189 grams without its strap, includes adjustable interpupillary distance between 59 and 68 millimeters, and offers per-eye diopter adjustment.[8] The higher-end Pancake 1Pro added Mini-LED illumination, eye tracking with iris recognition for login and payments, and additional cameras for Mixed Reality passthrough.[9]

Skyworth VR has released a series of standalone headsets, with several models also marketed under alternate names for different regions and channels. The table below lists devices reported by independent VR press.

Market position
Skyworth is one of the largest television and display manufacturers in China and a long-established consumer electronics brand, which gives its VR subsidiary access to a mature supply chain and panel-making expertise.[1][2] Within VR, Skyworth has positioned itself primarily around high-resolution video viewing, cloud VR, and enterprise solutions rather than the gaming-focused mass market dominated by Meta Quest and Pico VR devices. Its move into thin pancake-optic headsets with the Pancake series reflected a broader industry shift, led by products such as the Pico 4 and Meta Quest Pro, toward slimmer standalone form factors.[8][9]
