Skybox AI is a browser-based generative AI tool made by Blockade Labs that creates 360-degree panoramic images, called skyboxes, from text prompts and preset art styles.[1] Its images use the equirectangular format and can be exported as cube maps, HDR and EXR lighting files, depth maps, videos and 3D meshes.[2] Blockade Labs promotes them as backgrounds and lighting for game engines, 3D software and web scenes.[3][4]

Blockade Labs launched Skybox AI to the public on 17 February 2023.[5] The launch model was followed by Model 2 in July 2023, Model 3 in April 2024 (updated as Model 3.1 in June 2024) and Model 4, which was added to the API in February 2026.[6][7][8] Developers can use the service through the web app, a web API and SDKs, including a free plug-in for Unity.[9][10] As of November 2026, paid plans start at US$24 per month with monthly billing, and API access starts with the Standard plan.[11][12]

In VR, Skybox AI images have been applied as custom home backgrounds on Meta Quest headsets, generated inside WebXR scenes and used for environments in apps for Apple Vision Pro, and the web app has a VR mode for headset browsers.[13][14][15][16]

History

Blockade Labs

Blockade Labs grew out of the game studio Blockade Games. According to an April 2024 GamesBeat article based on an interview with chief executive Marguerite deCourcelle, she founded Blockade Games in January 2018, and its team made the game Plasma Bears. She then teamed up with Adam B. Levine, who had previously launched an AI company; the two merged their companies to build an art creation platform, and she started Blockade Labs with Levine in December 2022.[17] GamesBeat reported that the company worked remotely, had about 13 full-time staff and had raised US$2.5 million, from investors including Animoca Brands, Spatial Capital, 6th Man Ventures, Galaxy Interactive, Baller Ventures, Red Beard Ventures, Polygon Ventures, Digital XYZ and Yunt Capital.[17] The Skybox AI terms of service are an agreement with Blockade Games, Inc., a Delaware corporation; they also cover a second product, Blendbox AI, and give a notice address in Indianapolis, Indiana.[18]

Launch and beta releases

Blockade Labs later described the version it launched on 17 February 2023 as capable of 6K equirectangular text-to-image generation.[5] CG Channel's coverage of the 2023 beta described an early-access browser tool in which users entered a 400-character text prompt and chose a preset art style; the result could be downloaded as a 6,144 x 3,072 pixel JPEG in latlong (equirectangular) format, with an optional 2,048 x 1,024 pixel depth map.[6] Sketch mode, introduced in May 2023 and initially available in the browser only on desktop computers and larger tablets, generated a scene from lines drawn by the user together with the text prompt.[6][19]

The web app then went through a series of numbered beta releases:

In its March 2024 anniversary post, Blockade Labs said that 1.5 million users had created more than 10 million skyboxes in the first year, and that the tool offered 47 styles and an official Unity Verified Solution plug-in.[5] GamesBeat reported more than 5,000 paying customers in April 2024.[17] At its launch, according to CG Channel, Model 3 had fewer preset styles than Model 2, which remained available, and its images could not yet be remixed, edited or turned into 3D meshes.[1] The API stopped supporting Model 2 on 1 October 2024, and the Sketch control mode was not carried over to Model 3.[8]

Model 4

Model 4 was added to the API on 20 February 2026, followed on 5 March 2026 by two quality variants, Standard and Enhanced.[8][22] Blockade Labs' Model 4 page describes it as giving "a sharper sky and 32-bit HDRI from one world", with better spatial coherence and better adherence to natural-language prompts, and compares the same prompts rendered with Model 3 and Model 4.[23] Model 3 skyboxes are generated at 8K (8,192 x 4,096 pixels) by default, while Model 4 skyboxes are always generated at 4K (4,096 x 2,048 pixels). Model 4 exports are limited to 4K, 2K and 1K (the two lower resolutions were added in July 2026), and cube map, depth map and GLB exports are not available for Model 4.[22][2][8] A documentation update on 23 September 2026 stated that only the Standard and Business plans can use Model 4.[8] As of November 2026 the API documentation calls Model 2 deprecated, Model 3 the "standard widespread model" and Model 4 the model with "the latest improvements".[22] The company's website claims "15,000,000 worlds imagined" and shows Volkswagen Group, Intel, Siemens, T-Mobile, Accenture and Thinglink among its customers.[12]

Features

Generation

A generation starts from a style preset, which selects the model and the overall look, and a text prompt.[22] The API documentation gives a maximum of 2,000 characters for prompts and 600 for negative text, which describes things to avoid; each style also defines its own maximums. A seed value makes the generator produce similar images when it is run again with the same seed and settings.[22] The prompt enhancer, added to the API in July 2023, expands a short prompt such as "wildflower meadow" into a longer description.[8] Model 4 adds a horizon shift setting from -20 to 20, which moves the horizon up or down, and a "soft lines" option for softer line rendering.[22]

Remix reimagines an existing scene in a different style while keeping its structure.[12][7] Through the API, a remix can start from a previously generated skybox, a random skybox from one of the user's projects, or an uploaded equirectangular image. In June 2025 the API's "Remix from Uploaded Image" mode was renamed "Remix from Control Image"; it uses only the structure of the image, not its colors. "Remix from Init Image", brought back at the same time, also follows the image's colors and composition.[22][8] Its init_strength value sets the image's influence on an inverted scale from 0.11 (strong influence) to 0.9 (no influence); the documentation explains it in terms of how much of the diffusion process the uploaded image overrides before normal diffusion adds new content from the prompt. Uploaded images should have a 2:1 aspect ratio, measure at least 2,048 x 1,024 pixels and be no larger than 50 MB; other aspect ratios are forced to 2:1, which can warp the image.[22] As of November 2026, the website also lists Edit, which adds and removes objects in a scene, and Image2Pano, which turns a flat image into a panorama.[12][23]

Outputs

Generated skyboxes are equirectangular images. The export API, added on 22 August 2023, converts them into the following formats:[2][8]

Export Format Notes
Equirectangular image JPG, PNG 1K to 16K
Cube map PNG, in a default layout or a Roblox layout Not available for Model 4
HDRI HDR, EXR 32-bit since January 2025, according to Blockade Labs[21]
Depth map PNG 2K only; not available for Model 4
Video MP4 Landscape, portrait or square
3D mesh GLB Low, Medium, High or Epic quality; depth scale from 3.0 to 10.0; not available for Model 4

Export resolutions run from 1K (1,024 x 512 pixels) to 16K (16,384 x 8,192 pixels); 8K is the default for Model 3 and 4K for Model 4.[2] The highest resolution available also depends on the plan: as of November 2026, Essential offers 4K exports, Standard 8K and Business 16K.[11]

According to CG Channel, the site's welcome screen said in 2023 that the EXR and HDR files were not 32-bit images, so they were not true high dynamic range images.[6] In January 2025 Blockade Labs replaced what it called its "previous basic file conversion method" with HDRI processing that uses the full 32-bit dynamic range.[21] The company describes its HDRIs as a source of world lighting and reflections in Blender, Sky Light and image-based lighting in Unreal Engine, and HDRI sky and ambient lighting in Unity.[4]

According to CG Channel, the world meshes introduced in December 2023 were built from the panorama with Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) and included mid-distance elements such as buildings.[6] Blockade Labs described the meshes offered with Model 3.1 as single-perspective meshes.[7] The API gained a GLB mesh export type, with mesh quality and depth scale options, on 28 November 2025.[8]

API and SDKs

Web API

A client requests a skybox by sending a POST request with a style ID and a prompt to the /api/v1/skybox endpoint, authenticating with an API key in the x-api-key header, which was added in June 2023.[24][8] The documentation tells developers not to expose the key in front-end code, and to call the API from a backend service or use one of the SDKs. A request moves through the states pending, dispatched, processing and complete, or ends in abort or error. Clients can follow its progress over Pusher channels, which the documentation recommends, or through webhooks signed with the account's API secret; polling is described as suitable only for testing because it can trigger the rate limiter.[24]

The API documentation gives the following costs and timings as of November 2026:[22]

Model and variant Credits per generation Estimated latency Recommended timeout
Model 3 1 About 20 seconds 60 seconds
Model 4, Standard variant 3 About 60 seconds 120 seconds
Model 4, Enhanced variant 6 About 120 seconds 240 seconds

Model 4 is limited to one simultaneous generation per account. Each account can also have only a limited number of pending generations (1 on Free, 3 on Essential and Standard, 30 on Business), a rule documented in May 2026.[22][8] Other 2026 changelog entries added an export history endpoint (March), a max_wait timeout (May) and documentation for batch requests that queue several generations at once (July).[8]

SDKs and plug-ins

The API documentation lists SDKs from Blockade Labs for Unity (C#), Node.js (TypeScript and JavaScript) and Laravel (PHP), and a third-party Unreal Engine plugin by Adem Kilic among "libraries which are not maintained or hosted by Blockade Labs".[9]

Library Distribution Latest version (November 2026)
Unity SDK (C#), package com.blockadelabs.sdk Unity Asset Store, OpenUPM or a Git URL[25] 2.0.3 (22 December 2025)[26]
Node.js SDK (TypeScript and JavaScript) npm package @blockadelabs/sdk 1.1.7 (16 August 2023)[27]
Laravel SDK (PHP) Packagist package blockadelabs/sdk 1.0.3 (11 April 2023)[28]
Unreal Engine plugin by Adem Kilic (third party) GitHub Not listed[9]

The Unity SDK is listed free on the Unity Asset Store as "Skybox AI Generator by Blockade Labs (Subscription)" and is marked there as a Verified Solution. The listing describes it as a way to create skybox assets inside Unity "for use as skyboxes, HDRI lighting, and 3D world meshes", requires Unity 2021.3 or later and says it was tested with the Built-in, URP and HDRP render pipelines.[10] The package needs an API key from Blockade Labs, and as of November 2026 an API key starts with the Standard plan.[25][12] Version 1.7.2 added XR support with single-pass instanced rendering to the SDK's depth skybox shader, and version 2.0.0 added a C# API for generating skyboxes at runtime, proxy support and support for mixed reality apps built with PolySpatial for visionOS.[26] Selected releases from the changelog:[26]

Version Date Selected changes
1.2.0 30 March 2023 Initial public release
1.5.0 14 September 2023 Depth maps generated along with skyboxes; enhance prompt parameter
1.6.1 21 December 2023 Mesh Creator mode, which generates a mesh and uses a new shader to display the depth map
1.7.0 19 January 2024 Skyboxes imported as cubemaps; generated Skybox Cubemap material and HDRP Volume Profile
1.7.2 7 February 2024 XR support with single-pass instanced rendering in the depth skybox shader; cubemap creation in built applications
1.8.0 10 May 2024 Model 3 preview with native 8,192 x 4,096 pixel output
1.9.0 14 June 2024 Model 3.1 with Remix and 3D; depth baked into saved meshes for occlusion and collision

2.0.3 22 December 2025 Installs into the Assets folder; support for the new Input System

The SDK changelog has no entry after 2.0.3 and does not mention Model 4, which the API added in February 2026.[26][8] According to the SDK's README, in Mesh Creator mode the Blockade Labs Skybox Mesh component generates a tetrahedron mesh that the generated depth map deforms, with adjustable mesh density and depth scale. Fully immersive visionOS apps use the same setup as the render pipeline in use. In PolySpatial mixed reality apps the scene sky is not rendered, so the README directs developers to render a Mesh Creator mesh and switch its material to a Shader Graph version of the depth material, because PolySpatial supports only Shader Graph materials. The README also strongly encourages a proxy service for runtime generation, to keep the API key secure and minimize unauthorized generation, and warns against committing the key to source control or shipping it with an application.[25]

Use in VR development

Blockade Labs' product pages present skybox exports as Unity skybox materials, Unreal Engine sky spheres and cube map backdrops, Blender world shader backgrounds and Three.js equirectangular backgrounds.[3] For the web they also name React Three Fiber, Babylon.js (environment textures for web games and product views) and A-Frame, described as "a wraparound sky for WebXR pages and 360 scenes".[29] In April 2024, according to CG Channel, Blockade Labs said that the technology was used in VR apps for Meta Quest and Vision Pro headsets and in demonstrations by NVIDIA and T-Mobile.[1] The company's anniversary post named NVIDIA, Unity, Rec Room and Accenture as partners.[5]

Meta Quest home environments

Meta's Quest system software v54, released in May 2023, added an experimental Custom Skybox View option that replaces the 360-degree background behind a home environment with one of three preinstalled images or an image from the file system. UploadVR reported that the custom skybox is not visible to people visiting the home, and that Meta warned it may not work in all environments.[30] MIXED, which reported that v54 had rolled out to Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro, published a June 2023 guide to generating a skybox with Skybox AI in the Meta Quest Browser, downloading it to the headset and applying it under Settings, Personalization, Virtual Environment, all without leaving VR.[13]

WebXR

SKYBX, an open-source WebXR application created on GitHub in March 2023, brings Skybox AI generation into an immersive scene. On a WebXR headset such as the Meta Quest 2 or Pico 4, the user types a prompt on a virtual keyboard and points a controller at a Generate button, then explores the new skybox from inside. It is built with the Elixr engine, a WebXR framework based on Three.js, and is co-licensed under the MIT License by Blockade Games, Inc. and Felix Zhang.[14] The Skybox AI web viewer itself gained a VR mode in April 2024: on a WebVR-compatible device, a VR button places the user inside the skybox, and Blockade Labs named Apple Vision Pro, Quest 2 and Quest 3 as examples.[16]

Apple Vision Pro

Cephalopod Studio, an indie app studio based in Austin, Texas, with apps by Matt Waller and Abe Mangona, built Passage, an Apple Vision Pro app in which users create environments with generative AI through the Skybox AI API.[15] In a May 2024 post on Blockade Labs' blog and a June 2024 post on the studio's own blog, Waller, a co-founder of the studio, described routing requests through a relay server so that the API key stays out of the app, receiving completion updates over Pusher, and displaying each panorama on a large sphere in RealityKit that is turned inside out by setting its x scale to -1.[15][31] The app offered a progressive immersion mode and a mixed immersion mode with a cutout that shows the user's desk and keyboard. Waller wrote that he first tested the API's images on a Quest 2, and that the early images on the Vision Pro were 6K before a newer version of the API brought 8K.[15] As of November 2026, the App Store lists the app as "Immersive 360 Worlds: Passage", requiring visionOS 26.0 or later.[32]

Research software

In June 2023, WorldViz published a tutorial in which kitchen panoramas generated with Skybox AI are loaded into SightLab, WorldViz's experiment generator plugin for its Vizard VR toolkit. After a session, SightLab saves a summary of fixations and raw eye-tracking data such as pupil diameter and gaze position, and its session replay shows heatmaps and scan paths; the tutorial also describes synchronizing sessions with Biopac AcqKnowledge for physiological measures such as heart rate.[33]

Research

A paper by João Marcelo Teixeira, Fabiana Peres and Claudio Mauricio in the abstracts and workshops proceedings of the 2024 IEEE VR conference used Skybox AI, which its abstract describes as a free AI-based 360 panorama generator, to highlight some of the current limitations of automatic panorama generation from text input.[34]

Yoojin Han and Joowon Jeong of Yonsei University published a peer-reviewed study in the journal Buildings in April 2026 that tested a workflow for producing 360-degree images as experimental stimuli for research on indoor spaces. They chose Skybox AI, identified in the paper as Model 4, for its ability to generate equirectangular panoramas directly with stable global coherence, and used it to generate an enclosed indoor atrium in white, light wood and dark wood versions. The authors found Skybox AI limited in placing discrete objects such as plants with consistent lighting and scale, and its Remix function did not support fixed random seeds, so they inserted greenery in post-processing with Google's Gemini 3 Flash Image model, codenamed Nano Banana 2. The panoramas were scored with CLIP scores, straight-line deviation and seam continuity measures (MSE, PSNR and SSIM), each calculated on 20 normal field-of-view views per panorama and averaged.[35]

In the study's final stage, seven senior experts (four architectural designers and three researchers, each with more than ten years of professional experience) compared the AI-generated scenes, presented on Meta Quest 3 headsets, with matched reference scenes built in SketchUp and Enscape. On a seven-point scale consistent with the IPQ presence questionnaire, the AI-generated stimuli had a mean presence score of 6.143, against 4.397 for the conventional models (Wilcoxon signed-rank test, Z = -2.3664, p = 0.018). The authors list as limitations minor artifacts in complex architectural geometry; the reliance on static 360-degree images, which limits evaluation of users moving through the space; and reproducibility challenges from reliance on specific AI tools, since results can vary across generative models and versions.[35]

Limitations

According to CG Channel, the HDR and EXR exports offered in 2023 were not 32-bit images and so were not true high dynamic range images; Blockade Labs moved to 32-bit HDRI processing in January 2025.[6][21] When Blockade Labs improved rendering at the top and bottom of the sphere in April 2024, it said the result was "not perfect in all cases".[16] The API documentation warns that the first one or two generations in a new session may show more artifacts while GPU runners start up.[22] Model 4 output is limited to 4K and cannot be exported as a cube map, depth map or GLB mesh.[2] In Han and Jeong's study, Skybox AI produced stable spatial structures but was limited in placing discrete objects with consistent lighting and scale; when the authors' prompts described large public spaces, the system automatically generated sky elements, so they repeated the exclusions throughout their prompts.[35]

The homepage advertises pay-as-you-go pricing on Business plans, and the company's page for product teams lists API generation from US$0.32 per generation on Model 3, with no minimums, on Business plans only.[12][36]

Paid plans began with versions 0.6 and 0.6.1 in August 2023.[6] CG Channel's beta coverage, last updated in February 2024, listed Basic (US$12 per month or US$120 per year), Pro (US$24 or US$240) and Technowizard (US$60 or US$576) subscriptions; free accounts could download up to 15 skyboxes a month, with watermarked exports licensed under CC BY, and 3D mesh generation was limited to Technowizard.[6] By April 2024, free accounts could still generate up to 15 skyboxes a month but needed a paid plan to download them; Basic allowed up to 100 skyboxes a month under a CC BY license, Pro allowed 250 a month with full commercial licensing, and Technowizard had no generation limit and included experimental features such as 3D meshes.[1]

In March 2025, Blockade Labs phased out the Basic plan and its separate API plans in favor of Free, Pro, Technowizard and Enterprise tiers. Basic (US$12 per month) and Individual API (US$20 per month) subscribers were moved to Pro (US$24 per month), API access became standard for Pro and Technowizard, generation limits were lowered, and Team API memberships (US$100 per month) were to move gradually to Enterprise plans. The changes took effect for existing accounts on 14 April 2025.[37] By January 2026 the paid plans were Essential, Standard and Business, at the same prices as in November 2026. The January page offered five free preview-only generations with no exports, stated that all plans included full commercial licensing, and listed 8K exports and limited API access for Essential, and HDRI lighting and 3D skybox meshes for Standard.[38]

Terms of service

The terms of service prepared on 18 August 2026 state that users own the assets they create with the service "to the extent possible under current law". Users grant Blockade a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, sublicensable, royalty-free and irrevocable copyright license to the text and image prompts they enter and to the assets produced. Commercial use is permitted only under subscriptions that expressly grant commercial licensing, which the terms list as Essential, Standard, Business and Enterprise; assets generated under the Free Plan or the Academic Subscription are limited to non-commercial use. Users must be at least 18 years old.[18] The November 2026 plans page lists commercial licensing among the Business plan's features.[11] CG Channel also noted the perpetual license in its 2023 and 2024 coverage of the service.[6][1]
