SXR2230P
Information
Type System on a chip
Developer Qualcomm
Devices Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest 3S
Release Date Announced September 27, 2023 (as Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2)

The SXR2230P is a system on chip that is the primary chip of the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform. It is the model number that Qualcomm uses for the chip it markets as Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, and chip identification guides list it as "Qualcomm SXR2230P-100-AB Snapdragon XR2 gen 2 applications processor" in the Meta Quest 3[1] and as "Qualcomm SXR2230P-100-AA Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 hexa-core applications processor" in the Meta Quest 3S.[2]

The part number first became public in September 2022, when import logs referring to test platforms for an "SXR2230P" chip under the codename "Project Halliday" were reported by the VR press.[3] Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 on September 27, 2023, together with the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1, and said both platforms were developed in close collaboration with Meta.[4] Qualcomm said the XR2 Gen 2 would commercially debut in the Meta Quest 3 in 2023.[4]

Identification

MIXED reported in 2022 that the first generation Snapdragon XR2 used in the Meta Quest 2 carries the model number SXR2130P and that a revised Gen 1 chip for the then-upcoming Meta Quest Pro was numbered SXR2150P. It noted that the change from "2130" to "2230" pointed to a new generation of the XR2 chip.[3]

Semiconductor analysis firm TechInsights identifies the chip in the Meta Quest 3 as "Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 SXR2230P-100-AB (HG11-355514-1)" and reports that it is made on a "Samsung 4nm (4LPX) FInFET high-k metal gate (HKMG) CMOS process". TechInsights describes the application processor as combining a Qualcomm Kryo CPU and an Adreno GPU with LPDDR5x memory controller interfaces.[5]

The chip is paired with a family of Qualcomm power management ICs whose names follow the same number. The iFixit chip identification of the Quest 3 lists several Qualcomm PMXR2230 series power management chips on the headset board,[1] and the Quest 3S identification names the PMXR2230-001, PMXR2230B-002, PMXR2230VE-001 and PMXR2230VS-001.[2] Qualcomm's reference design for the platform lists the PMK2230, PMXR2230, PMXR2230VS and PMXR2230VE among its components.[6]

History

Early reports as "Project Halliday"

On September 13, 2022, MIXED reported that Samulia, whom it called a firmware detective, had found import logs for test platforms of a Qualcomm chip with the model number SXR2230P. The logs gave the codename "Project Halliday", which MIXED read as a reference to the creator of the OASIS in Ready Player One, and indicated that the test platform could drive "4K per eye". The same report said the revised Gen 1 chip SXR2150P for the Quest Pro carried the codename "Project Tron".[3] UploadVR reported the same logs in October 2022 and noted that such import records reflect early test chips sent to headset makers, not mass production.[7]

Announcement

Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 in a press release dated September 27, 2023, in San Diego. The release states that the platform brings "premium MR and VR technology into a single chip architecture" for thinner headsets "that don't require an external battery pack", and that it has 2.5 times higher GPU performance and 8 times better AI performance than the first generation XR2.[4] TechCrunch's report of the launch added Qualcomm's figures of support for two 3K displays, input from up to 10 cameras and sensors, and 12 ms latency for pass-through video.[8] MIXED reported that the chip moved from the 7 nm process of the first generation to 4 nm, with a CPU performance increase of more than 33 percent.[9]

In the release, Meta chief technology officer Andrew Bosworth said: "Together, we are defining next-generation technologies that deliver massive breakthroughs in power, performance, and AI."[4]

Higher-clocked variant

On January 4, 2024, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2. UploadVR described it as a higher-end variant of the XR2 Gen 2 chip in the Meta Quest 3, with the GPU clocked 15% higher and the CPU clocked 20% higher. It supports up to 4.3K per eye at 90 Hz or 3.7K per eye at 120 Hz, compared with up to 3.1K per eye at 90 Hz or 2.7K per eye at 120 Hz for the base XR2 Gen 2, and up to 12 concurrent cameras instead of 10.[10]

Use in Meta headsets

Meta Quest 3

iFixit's chip identification of the Meta Quest 3 lists the SXR2230P-100-AB alongside what it calls "Likely SK hynix H58G66BK8BX105 8 GB LPDDR5 SDRAM memory" and a SK hynix 128 GB NAND flash chip. The same guide lists a separate Qualcomm WCN6856-102 Wi-Fi 6E SoC.[1]

Meta sets its own clock limits for the chip. Meta's developer documentation lists a top CPU level of 2.36 GHz and a top GPU level of 599 MHz for Quest 3 and Quest 3S, and notes that these headsets cannot access GPU levels 3 or 4 when passthrough is enabled.[12] In October 2024, UploadVR reported that a firmware update had raised the Quest 3's maximum GPU frequency from 545 MHz to 599 MHz in the default mode and from 599 MHz to 640 MHz in Favor GPU mode.[13]

Meta Quest 3S

The Meta Quest 3S uses the SXR2230P-100-AA variant. iFixit's identification pairs it with a Micron MT62F1G64D4EK-026 WT:B 8 GB LPDDR5 SDRAM chip and a SK hynix 128 GB NAND flash chip.[2] UploadVR noted that because the Quest 3S uses the same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset with the same GPU, it received the same GPU frequency increase as the Quest 3.[13]

Reference design

Qualcomm offers a head-mounted reference design built on the platform under the name Snapdragon QXR2230P (see Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 Reference Design). Qualcomm describes it as a "form factor accurate reference design" intended to help customers start next-generation VR and MR headset design and software development, with schematics, PCB layout and key performance indicators available to customers.[6] Holographica reported the reference design in October 2023.[14]

Software support

The SXR2230P appears by part number in open-source AI tooling. The Qualcomm backend of PyTorch's ExecuTorch framework lists SXR2230P as a supported chipset with Hexagon Tensor Processor (HTP) architecture V69 and a VTCM size of 8 MB.[15]
