Rokid Glass 2 is an augmented reality head-mounted display released in 2020. It was developed by the Hangzhou-based company Rokid as a foldable, monocular pair of AR glasses for business customers, with uses such as security, industrial work and education.[1][2] The glasses weigh 90 grams and connect by a thin cable to a separate dock that holds a 10,000 mAh battery.[1]

Rokid announced the device on 15 January 2020 at its first Rokid Open Day in Hangzhou.[1] Mass production finished in mid-2020, and during production Rokid added an optional infrared temperature sensor so the glasses could screen people for fever during the COVID-19 pandemic.[3][4] The design won an iF Design Award in 2021.[5]

Announcement and release

Rokid Glass 2 is Rokid's third pair of smart glasses. The company had earlier released Rokid Glass (June 2018), a product for enterprise customers, and Rokid Vision (May 2019).[1][6] Compared with the first Rokid Glass, which weighed 150 grams and had a 33-degree field of view, the new model is lighter, has a wider field of view and more computing power.[1]

Rokid founder and CEO Zhu Mingming presented Rokid Glass 2 on 15 January 2020 at the 2020 Rokid Open Day in Hangzhou, the first open day the company had held in its five years.[1][7] Auganix reported that Rokid planned mass production and launch for the second quarter of 2020.[8] At the same event, Zhu said Rokid was developing a lightweight binocular all-in-one AR headset for enterprise customers, expected in the third quarter of 2020. He also said that business hardware would take off before consumer hardware and that Rokid would concentrate on commercial uses until consumer products matured.[6][1]

In early July 2020, Rokid said in a press release that the glasses had finished mass production and would begin shipping to distributors and pre-order customers. According to ARPost, production had started in the second half of 2019, and early users and pre-orders had come from countries including the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.[4] KrASIA gave a different timeline, reporting that Rokid mass-produced the device in May 2020 after delays caused by the pandemic.[9] KrASIA also reported that the glasses were priced between US$2,000 and US$4,000.[9] iF Design lists the launch year as 2020 and the target regions as Asia, Europe, North America and South America.[5]

Design and hardware

The glasses and the computing and battery unit are separate. A custom 3.0 mm soft cable connects the glasses to a dock about the size of a power bank, which holds the battery and processing hardware and keeps weight off the wearer's head.[6][1] Rokid's English product page describes the glasses as a "tethered type" device with a "90g spectacle body".[2] The frame is made of aviation-grade magnesium-aluminum alloy lined with EVA foam. The temples fold like those of ordinary glasses on a hinge that Rokid says passed 20,000 folding tests, and they can spread outward by up to 15 degrees when worn.[2][6] The outer tinted lens can be removed, and prescription lenses attach magnetically on the inside.[1][10]

The display is a low-power LCOS panel with a resolution of 1280x720, shown to one eye through waveguide optics with a 40-degree field of view.[1][2] Rokid gives a contrast ratio of up to 400:1 and says the image is comparable to an 85-inch HD television seen from 3 meters away.[1][10] According to Shenzhenware, Rokid spent three years shrinking the waveguide module and reducing the power draw of the light engine.[6]

Rokid's Chinese product page lists an Amlogic 905D3 processor, 2 GB of LPDDR4 memory and 32 GB of eMMC storage. It also lists a 9-axis IMU, an 8-megapixel autofocus camera, a speaker, two microphones with active noise cancellation, Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, USB Type-C and the Android operating system.[10] The device also has a neural processing unit (NPU) for image recognition.[7] The dock supports 4G and GPS expansion modules, and Rokid rates its 10,000 mAh battery, which supports Quick Charge 2.0, for up to 8 hours of use.[1][2] Rokid's English page lists compatibility with PC, Mac and mobile devices that have DisplayPort output.[2] Shenzhenware and QbitAI reported that all of the device's core components were made in China, which Shenzhenware said was meant to meet the data security requirements of government and security customers.[6][7]

Software and features

Rokid Glass 2 runs Rokid's own voice operating system, which combines AI voice control with the AR display.[1] Voice commands work without a wake word. Rokid claims a response time of 0.5 seconds, a 98 percent recognition rate and a 1 percent false activation rate.[10] Pandaily reported that the glasses recognize 400 voice commands offline.[3] Besides voice, the glasses have touch controls,[10] and in a hands-on at the launch event Shenzhenware used voice commands together with head movements to zoom, page through and lock images.[6]

For security work, Rokid says the NPU can identify a face in as little as 0.6 seconds and recognize up to 10 faces at the same time. An offline mode compares faces against a local database of up to 300,000 faces, and Rokid says the system is tuned for low light and moving subjects.[1][7] At the launch demonstration, the glasses also performed offline license plate recognition, and an online mode using Alibaba Cloud 5G edge computing could add and look up face data in real time.[6] Other features include remote assistance with screen sharing, real-time annotation and multi-window display, as well as object recognition, live broadcasting, file reading and video viewing.[2][3]

Rokid provided a software development kit and a development platform supporting Android Studio, Unity and Cocos.[6] The company listed training, configuration and maintenance, power inspection, and logistics and warehousing as target applications.[8] In July 2020, a Rokid spokesperson told ARPost that the company's released products were all monocular and used mainly in industrial, maintenance and assembly, manufacturing, logistics, exhibition and healthcare markets.[4]

Temperature screening

After the COVID-19 outbreak, Rokid added a temperature detection function to Rokid Glass 2.[2] KrASIA reported that the company introduced the function in late March 2020 on Rokid Glass 2 hardware that was about to enter mass production, and that the glasses were first used on 23 March 2020 by security guards at Hongyuan Park in Hangzhou.[9] In March 2020, Newsweek quoted a Rokid blog post saying that the temperature-screening system could measure body temperature from about 2 meters (6.6 feet) in as little as 0.5 seconds. Citing the South China Morning Post, Newsweek also reported that Rokid had supplied smart glasses to security officials and highway police in Hangzhou, Huzhou and Quzhou in Zhejiang province.[11] In April 2020, Border Security Report described the product as the newly released T1 Thermal Smart Glasses, intended for frontline workers in places such as airplanes, subways, companies and malls.[12]

The thermal hardware is a separate module. Pandaily reported that Rokid developed an infrared thermal imaging sensor called T1, which attaches with a camera to the glasses frame; the combination of Rokid Glass 2 and T1 was sold as Rokid Glass T1, and the wearer sees temperature readings on the monocular display behind the right lens. In May 2020 Rokid upgraded the sensor to T2, which a Rokid spokesperson said could take 1,000 temperature readings a minute and check up to 10 people at once.[3] Rokid's product page gave a lower figure of 200 people within one minute at a distance of 3 meters.[2]

According to Pandaily, Rokid had sold the glasses with T1 or T2 sensors to more than 30 countries by July 2020, with orders reaching 5,000 units.[3] KrASIA put the number at 35 countries and regions, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Spain and South Africa. It named Singapore Mass Rapid Transit, the airport operator Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 and the Dubai Transport Security Department as customers.[9]

Reception

In its hands-on at the launch event, Shenzhenware found the weight well distributed: the glasses did not slide forward, and they did not press noticeably on the nose or ears. The reviewer described the display as clear and free of a visible semi-transparent film. Commonly used voice commands were recognized quickly, and the glasses still picked up the wearer's commands after loud industrial noise was added.[6]

Rokid Glass 2 won an iF Design Award in 2021 in the Product Design discipline, in the Gaming/VR/AR category.[5]
