The QXR2230P is a reference design VR headset from Qualcomm.[1]
It uses a SXR2230P.
It is a reference design for the XR2 Gen 2 platform.
Qualcomm describes the QXR2230P as a "form factor accurate" head-mounted display engineered to help its customers jump-start the hardware and software development of their own next-generation VR and mixed reality headsets.[1] It is a Standalone VR design with two Micro-OLED panels of 2560 x 2560 pixels, pancake lenses, room-scale six degrees of freedom tracking, hand tracking, eye tracking and video see-through.[1] The design is aimed at Qualcomm's customers rather than consumers, and its software is available only once licensing is in place.[1] Press coverage at the time noted that Qualcomm gave no price or weight for it.[2]
Background
Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform on 27 September 2023, alongside the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 for smart glasses. The company said the XR2 Gen 2 brings mixed reality and VR processing into a single chip for thinner headsets that do not need an external battery pack, and claimed 2.5 times the GPU performance and 8 times the AI performance of the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1. Qualcomm said the chip was developed in close collaboration with Meta Platforms, would debut commercially in the Meta Quest 3 in 2023, and that other manufacturers would follow the next year.[3]
SXR2230P is the part number of the XR2 Gen 2 chip. An iFixit chip identification of the Meta Quest 3 lists a Qualcomm SXR2230P-100-AB "Snapdragon XR2 gen 2 applications processor" on the headset's main board.[4] Before Qualcomm announced the chip, UploadVR reported in October 2022 that import logs referenced a chip numbered SXR2230P with the codename "Project Halliday". UploadVR noted that the XR2 Gen 1 is numbered SXR2130P, and that the change from 1 to 2 pointed to a second-generation XR2.[5]
History
Qualcomm's product brief for the reference design, document 87-61723-1, carries a 2023 copyright.[1] Chinese XR news site Nweon reported on 30 September 2023 that Qualcomm had released the Snapdragon QXR2230P as its XR2 Gen 2 reference design, to help manufacturers build next-generation VR and mixed reality headsets.[6] Russian XR news site Holographica covered the design on 3 October 2023 and wrote that, apart from the Meta Quest 3, it was at that point the only way to obtain hardware with the XR2 Gen 2.[2]
Qualcomm later issued Rev. B of the brief with a 2024 copyright. The specifications are unchanged from Rev. A. The revision refers to the chip as "Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2" instead of by its SXR2230P part number, and lists the kit's headset as the "Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 Reference Platform" instead of the "QXR2230P HMD".[1][7]
Purpose and availability
According to Qualcomm, the QXR2230P gives customers early access to the latest technology and features from Qualcomm Technologies. Comprehensive reference design documents, including schematics, PCB layout and key performance indicators, are available to Qualcomm's customers, and the brief points to a separate QXR2230P Hardware Overview document (80-36372-130) for more detail.[1]
Qualcomm offers "quick load" software for the design on its Createpoint portal once proper licensing is in place; the software requires no compiling, and enabling it requires an updated Test and Tools Agreement (TTA).[1] Holographica wrote that reference units of this kind are bought by OEM factories that build products to order and by makers of finished devices, and that a consumer headset such as the Quest 3 does not suit the needs of Qualcomm's customers.[2]
Qualcomm lists the kit contents as follows:[1]
| Rev. A (2023) | Rev. B (2024) |
|---|---|
| QXR2230P HMD | Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 Reference Platform |
| Cleaning cloth | Cleaning cloth |
| AC adapter with USB Type-C cable | AC adapter with USB Type-C cable |

Hardware
Qualcomm's brief lists the features of the design as a standalone VR platform with a 2.56 x 2.56 K dual-panel micro-OLED display, pancake lenses with myopia adjustment, room-scale 6DoF head tracking, hand tracking, eye tracking, video see-through, split rendering and a 6DoF controller.[1]
The two 1.03-inch micro-OLED displays each have a resolution of 2560 x 2560. The pancake lenses have adjustable interpupillary distance and diopter.[1] Four OV7251 cameras handle 6DoF tracking, there are two S5KJD1SP13 RGB cameras, and two OC0TA1B cameras track the eyes. The headset also has an accelerometer and gyroscope, a magnetometer, a proximity sensor and a PPG (photoplethysmography) sensor.[1]
Besides the main SoC, the brief names the following Qualcomm companion chips: WCN7851, WCD9385, WSA8835, PMK2230, PMXR2230, PMXR2230VS, PMXR2230VE, PM8010 and SMB1393, "and more".[1][7]
