NVIDIA Omniverse is a real-time 3D simulation, rendering and collaboration platform developed by NVIDIA. It is built on Pixar's Universal Scene Description (OpenUSD) and on NVIDIA's RTX ray-tracing renderer, and it lets teams working in different 3D applications edit a shared scene at the same time.[1] NVIDIA previewed the platform at its GTC conference in March 2019, opened a public beta in December 2020, and released the paid Omniverse Enterprise edition on November 9, 2021.[2][3] Since 2024 NVIDIA has described Omniverse as an operating system for building and operating physically realistic digital twins, and in 2025 and 2026 it repositioned the platform as a set of libraries for "physical AI" (robots, autonomous vehicles and automated factories).[4][5]
Omniverse is relevant to virtual reality and augmented reality because NVIDIA used it to render production-scale 3D scenes in a headset with full real-time ray tracing, which the company described in 2021 as the first full-image, real-time ray-traced VR. NVIDIA released the Omniverse XR app in 2022, added OpenXR support and retinal-resolution Quad View rendering for the Varjo XR-3 in 2023, and in 2024 began streaming Omniverse digital twins from the cloud to the Apple Vision Pro through a hybrid rendering workflow.[6][7][8] Headset delivery relies on NVIDIA CloudXR, whose version 6.0 (March 2026) streams RTX-rendered content to Apple Vision Pro, Meta Quest 3, Pico 4 Ultra and web browsers over OpenXR.[9]
As of September 2026 the platform is distributed through GitHub and NVIDIA's NGC catalog rather than the retired Omniverse Launcher, the latest Omniverse Kit SDK release is 110.3 (August 2026), and NVIDIA's product page describes Omniverse as libraries within its Agent Toolkit for building "simulation-ready worlds" for physical AI.[10][11][5]
History
Preview and beta (2019-2021)
NVIDIA showed Omniverse for the first time at its GTC conference in March 2019. Techgage described it as a collaboration suite that "pulls together all the different aspects of a project for live editing and previewing", using Pixar's Universal Scene Description for scene data, NVIDIA's Material Definition Language for surfaces, and RTX hardware for real-time rendering; the demo showed modeling, scene assembly and texturing work from separate tools previewed together in an Omniverse viewer.[2]
A yearlong early access program followed, in which Ericsson, Foster + Partners, Industrial Light & Magic and more than 40 other companies, along with about 400 individual creators and developers, evaluated the platform. NVIDIA announced the open beta on October 5, 2020, describing Omniverse as an RTX-based 3D simulation and collaboration platform built on USD, with software partners including Adobe, Autodesk, Bentley Systems, Robert McNeel & Associates, SideFX and the Blender Foundation.[1] The open beta download went live in December 2020.[3][12]
Omniverse Enterprise and the free version (2021-2022)
On April 12, 2021, NVIDIA announced Omniverse Enterprise, a subscription edition with enterprise support that bundles the Nucleus server, Connector plugins, the Omniverse Create scene-composition app, the Omniverse View visualization app and NVIDIA RTX Virtual Workstation software. Nearly 17,000 users had downloaded the open beta in its first three months, and beta customers named in the release included BMW Group, Foster + Partners, WPP, Ericsson, Industrial Light & Magic, Activision and Bentley Systems.[12] CG Channel reported that the pricing first quoted in April 2021 was US$1,800 per user per year plus US$25,000 for a Nucleus server for up to 25 users, and quoted NVIDIA general manager Richard Kerris saying the company planned "to always have Omniverse for individuals be a free tool".[13]
By August 2021 more than 50,000 individual creators had downloaded the beta and more than 500 companies were evaluating it.[14] Omniverse Enterprise became generally available at GTC on November 9, 2021, when NVIDIA also introduced Omniverse VR, Omniverse XR Remote, Omniverse Avatar, Omniverse Replicator, Omniverse Farm and Omniverse Showroom; downloads had passed 70,000 and professionals at more than 700 companies were using the platform.[3] CG Channel noted that subscription pricing at launch started at US$9,000 per year.[13] On January 4, 2022, at CES, NVIDIA made Omniverse free for individual creators using GeForce RTX and NVIDIA RTX GPUs, reporting nearly 100,000 downloads during the beta.[15]
Omniverse Cloud and OpenUSD (2022-2023)
On September 20, 2022, NVIDIA launched Omniverse Cloud, its first software- and infrastructure-as-a-service offering, covering Nucleus Cloud, App Streaming, Replicator, Farm, Isaac Sim and DRIVE Sim, with RIMAC Group, WPP and Siemens as early adopters and managed services available by application. The announcement framed the platform as a base for an "industrial metaverse".[16]
At SIGGRAPH on August 8, 2023, NVIDIA shipped a major release built on Omniverse Kit 105. It added an Extension Registry with more than 600 core extensions, renamed Omniverse Create to USD Composer, updated Audio2Face, and introduced OpenXR support for headsets from HTC Vive, Magic Leap and Varjo.[17] The same day NVIDIA announced four Omniverse Cloud APIs (ChatUSD, RunUSD, DeepSearch and USD-GDN Publisher) and confirmed that it had co-founded the Alliance for OpenUSD with Pixar, Adobe, Apple and Autodesk to standardize the format.[18]
Cloud APIs, Apple Vision Pro and physical AI (2024-2026)
At GTC on March 18, 2024, NVIDIA announced five Omniverse Cloud APIs (USD Render, USD Write, USD Query, USD Notify and Omniverse Channel) so that industrial software vendors such as Ansys, Cadence, Dassault Systemes, Hexagon, Microsoft, Rockwell Automation, Siemens and Trimble could embed Omniverse rendering and data services in their own tools, first on Microsoft Azure. Jensen Huang called Omniverse "the operating system for building and operating physically realistic digital twins".[4] The same keynote showed Omniverse scenes streamed to Apple Vision Pro (see below).[8]
On January 6, 2025, at CES, NVIDIA introduced the Cosmos world foundation models alongside four Omniverse Blueprints: Mega for robot fleets, autonomous vehicle simulation, spatial streaming to Apple Vision Pro, and real-time digital twins for computer-aided engineering. The release described Omniverse as a "digital twin operating system".[19] On March 18, 2025, NVIDIA called Omniverse "an operating system that connects the world's physical data to the realm of physical AI" and listed Accenture, Ansys, Cadence, Databricks, Dematic, Hexagon, Omron, SAP, Schneider Electric and Siemens among companies integrating it.[20]
NVIDIA deprecated the Omniverse Launcher, the desktop app that had installed Omniverse software since the beta, on October 1, 2025, moving Kit, apps, samples and templates to GitHub and the NGC catalog. Omniverse Create XR, Omniverse Code, Nucleus Workstation and USD Presenter reached end of life at the same time, while USD Composer and USD Explorer remained available. NVIDIA stated that "NVIDIA Omniverse is not going away."[10] On October 28, 2025, at GTC Washington, D.C., NVIDIA announced the Omniverse DSX Blueprint for designing and operating gigawatt-scale AI data centers as digital twins, validated at a Digital Realty facility in Manassas, Virginia.[21]
At GTC in March 2026 NVIDIA announced that Cadence, Dassault Systemes, PTC, Siemens and Synopsys were bringing Omniverse libraries into their industrial software for customers including FANUC, Honda, KION, Mercedes-Benz, Samsung and TSMC; KION uses Omniverse digital twins of warehouses to train autonomous forklifts for the logistics provider GXO.[22] The conference also introduced the Physical AI Data Factory Blueprint and a Vera Rubin DSX reference design.[23][24]
Architecture
Omniverse is a collection of services and SDKs rather than a single application. Its main parts are:

Kit releases follow a numbered series; Kit 105 shipped in August 2023 with the OpenXR work described below, Kit 109.0 was released in November 2025, and Kit 110.3 (August 2026) is the current release as of September 2026.[7][27][11]
Virtual and augmented reality
Omniverse XR and Create XR (2021-2023)
NVIDIA's first headset feature for the platform was Omniverse VR, announced with Omniverse Enterprise on November 9, 2021, and described by NVIDIA as "the world's first full-image, real-time ray-traced VR"; the same release added Omniverse XR Remote for AR viewing and virtual cameras on tablets.[3] The Omniverse Streaming Client, released in December 2021, used CloudXR to stream ray-traced USD content from an RTX PC running Omniverse Create to an iPad on iOS 14.5 or later or to Android tablets.[28]
The standalone Omniverse XR app entered public beta in May 2022. UploadVR reported that it loads USD scenes with tens of millions of polygons and renders them with full ray tracing, so that objects moved or rescaled in VR relight in real time, with no preprocessing or compiling. NVIDIA listed a GeForce RTX 3080 Ti as the minimum GPU and two RTX 3090 cards with NVLink as the recommended setup, and used static foveated rendering to concentrate work in the lens center. The app ran through SteamVR, with Oculus Touch and HTC Vive controllers officially supported.[6] CG Channel's report on the 2022.1 release added that NVIDIA had tested it on the HTC Vive Pro and Meta Quest 2, that AR streaming to iOS and Android tablets used the CloudXR SDK, and that the demo scene had 70 million polygons (18 billion after instancing); the app required Windows 10 and was free.[29]
In August 2023 NVIDIA deprecated the separate Omniverse XR app in favour of viewing XR content directly inside USD Composer, which gained native XR viewing in its 2023.1 release.[30] NVIDIA also distributed a related headset app named Omniverse Create XR through the Launcher; it was listed as end of life when the Launcher was retired on October 1, 2025.[10]
OpenXR and Varjo Quad View (2023)
With Kit 105 in August 2023 Omniverse gained connectivity to SteamVR, OpenXR and NVIDIA CloudXR, extending support to headsets from HTC Vive, Magic Leap and Varjo through the Khronos Group standard. NVIDIA product manager Max Bickley wrote that Kit 105 could drive Quad View rendering for the Varjo XR-3: the renderer produces two high-resolution and two lower-resolution views that the headset composites, totalling 15 million pixels, and NVIDIA recommended a multi-GPU workstation with RTX 6000 Ada Generation cards for it.[7] Varjo announced the support the same day, noting that the XR-3 renders at over 60 pixels per degree and that General Motors had shown the workflow at Augmented World Expo in June 2023. Marcus Olsson, Varjo's director of software partnerships, called real-time ray tracing "the holy grail of 3D visualization".[31] MIXED reported the update as letting developers build content compatible with other OpenUSD-based spatial computing platforms.[32]
Apple Vision Pro spatial streaming (2024-2026)
At GTC on March 18, 2024, NVIDIA announced that Omniverse Cloud APIs could send OpenUSD industrial scenes to the NVIDIA Graphics Delivery Network (GDN), a network of graphics data centers in more than 130 countries, for streaming to Apple Vision Pro. The workflow is hybrid: the headset renders its own interface with Apple's SwiftUI and RealityKit while the Omniverse RTX Renderer streams the scene from the cloud. The demo was a car configurator built by the CGI studio Katana, in which a designer changed paint and trim on a physically accurate vehicle digital twin. Apple's Mike Rockwell said the combination of the headset's displays and photorealistic rendering "unlocks an incredible opportunity", and NVIDIA's Rev Lebaredian called Vision Pro the "first untethered device which allows for enterprise customers to realize their work without compromise".[8]
NVIDIA published the workflow as "Spatial Streaming for Omniverse Digital Twins" in January 2025. Developer Jen Borucki described it as combining local and cloud rendering on RTX GPUs and GDN; a Kit application on the server handles rendering and scene changes while the Vision Pro sends head pose and interface events back, with the client project managed in Xcode.[33] NVIDIA's CES 2025 release listed spatial streaming to Apple Vision Pro as one of four Omniverse Blueprints, with Katana Studio and Innoactive among adopters.[19] Innoactive announced on January 7, 2025, that its Portal service streams Omniverse digital twins to Vision Pro, quoting Volkswagen's head of innovation on surface validation "without needing any physical prototype".[34] The current documentation supports Apple Vision Pro and iPad Pro clients, lets developers package USD data as a zip file for publication to GDN, and notes that as of Omniverse Kit 109 the spatial computing documentation has moved to a new location.[35]
CloudXR
NVIDIA CloudXR is the streaming layer that carries Omniverse content to headsets, tablets and browsers. On March 17, 2026, NVIDIA and Apple announced that CloudXR 6.0 is integrated natively into visionOS 26.4, so an RTX computer can stream 4K, low-latency content to Apple Vision Pro using dynamic foveated streaming based on approximate gaze; Autodesk, Innoactive, Synopsys, Trifork, X-Plane and iRacing built applications on it, and Roche, MHP and Switch combined it with Omniverse libraries for digital twin and factory visualization.[36] The CloudXR 6.0 SDK, detailed on March 31, 2026, is a universal OpenXR-based streaming runtime for headsets, operating systems and browsers; it adds the CloudXR.js web client for "zero-install web access to robotics, NVIDIA Omniverse, and OpenXR content through a single web link", supports Apple Vision Pro, Meta Quest 3, PICO 4 Ultra, iOS, iPadOS and desktop browsers, and runs its server on Windows 11 or Ubuntu 22.04 with an RTX 6000 Ada or better recommended.[9] Apple's FoveatedStreaming framework requires visionOS 26.4 or later, and NVIDIA states that gaze data stays protected at the streaming level and is not shared with the visionOS app or the host application.[37]

Digital twins and industrial use
Omniverse's largest deployments are industrial digital twins rather than consumer VR. BMW Group was a beta customer in 2021, and on March 21, 2023, NVIDIA reported that BMW was rolling Omniverse out across its global production network, starting with an entirely virtual model of its electric vehicle plant in Debrecen, Hungary, planned two years before the site opened in 2025; BMW uses USD to connect Siemens Process Simulate, Autodesk Revit and Bentley MicroStation data with its own Factory Explorer application.[12][38] In June 2025 BMW stated that its Virtual Factory covered digital twins of more than 30 production sites, that virtual collision checks before a product launch took three days instead of four weeks, and that it projected up to a 30 percent reduction in production planning costs.[39]
Siemens has worked with Omniverse since the 2022 Omniverse Cloud launch, and in 2024 adopted the Omniverse Cloud APIs for its Xcelerator portfolio; Siemens CEO Roland Busch said the APIs let customers "make their physics-based digital twins even more immersive".[16][4] The Mega Blueprint, announced in January 2025 and in preview on build.nvidia.com by March 2025, is a reference architecture for testing robot fleets in a warehouse or factory twin before deployment.[19][20]
Research use
Omniverse has been used in published research on digital twins. A 2025 paper in AIP Advances by Nitesh Bhatia and colleagues describes a workflow for building and visualizing a digital twin of a tokamak fusion device in Omniverse, integrating CAD models, simulation data and material properties.[40] A PEARC 2025 conference paper by James Burton and Nicholas Rengier of Clemson University reports deploying Omniverse on a datacenter-class NVIDIA OVX system integrated with the university's high-performance computing infrastructure.[41]
Reception
Coverage of Omniverse's VR features has stressed both the rendering quality and the hardware cost. In its 2022 report on Omniverse XR, UploadVR called the app "certainly an interesting experiment" and wrote that its GPU requirements were "a good reminder of just how much computing power will be needed to power truly photorealistic VR running in real-time some day".[6] Varjo's Marcus Olsson described the 2023 Omniverse integration as "a game-changer for mixed reality developers in design, engineering, entertainment, and virtual collaboration".[31] BMW's 30 percent planning-cost reduction is a company projection, not a measured result.[39]
