Lucky's Tale is a third-person 3D platform game built for virtual reality, developed by the Texas studio Playful Corp, which now trades as Playful Studios. It was a launch title for the consumer Oculus Rift on March 28, 2016, and Oculus included a free copy with every Rift headset.[1][2] The player controls Lucky, a fox who runs, jumps and tail-swipes through toy-scaled levels to rescue his friend Piggy from a tentacled villain called Glorp, while the camera keeps the action about an arm's length away so the player can lean in and look around the scenery with head tracking.[3][4][5]

Playful announced the game on June 4, 2014, and showed a playable demo on the Oculus Rift DK2 at E3 2014 under an exclusive partnership with Oculus VR.[6][3] It stayed a Rift exclusive for more than five years. A remastered version with updated lighting, rendering and audio and refined movement arrived on the Meta Quest 2 on November 18, 2021, followed by SteamVR on December 9, 2021 and PlayStation VR on April 7, 2022.[7][8][9]

Reviews of the 2016 release were mixed. Critics praised the comfort of its third-person VR camera and its toy-box presentation, but several found the platforming short and repetitive; the game holds a Metacritic score of 66 out of 100.[10] Two non-VR games followed the character to flat screens: Super Lucky's Tale (2017) and New Super Lucky's Tale (2019), the latter of which reached PlayStation 5 in March 2026.[11][12][13]

Gameplay

Lucky's Tale is a linear 3D platformer viewed from a third-person perspective. Lucky's move set is small: a jump and double jump, a tail swipe used as the attack, and a ground stomp.[14][15] Levels run through settings such as swamps, underwater ruins and a volcano, with boss fights, collectible coins and hidden side areas called foxholes.[8][4] Each level has three objectives: reaching the end, finishing a time trial, and finding the hidden coins. Progress to the next chapter is gated behind "paw prints" earned in those modes, which requires replaying levels.[16][15] Game Informer noted that the time trials have no checkpoints.[17]

The VR design rests on the camera. Instead of following Lucky closely, the camera keeps the character and the level a short distance in front of the player, at roughly arm's length, so the world reads like a diorama that the player looks down on.[5][3] The headset's positional tracking lets the player lean forward to peer over a ledge or crane around a corner.[3] Playful scaled the characters to roughly 10 inches tall, which company founder Paul Bettner compared to a doll house, and the studio's own description says Lucky "feels like a toy come to life".[18][4] On the Rift the game was played with the Xbox One gamepad that shipped in the box, because Oculus Touch did not exist when the game launched; Touch support was added later.[2][19][9]

The 2016 UploadVR review put the main story at a little over three hours, with four to five hours more once the replay modes are included; Destructoid estimated about five hours in total.[15][16]

Development

Playful Corp was founded in McKinney, Texas, in January 2013, originally under the name Verse Inc., by Paul Bettner and his brother David Bettner, co-creators of Words with Friends, who had left Zynga in October 2012.[6] Bettner backed the Oculus Rift Kickstarter at the US$5,000 tier and visited Oculus in December 2012.[1] On June 4, 2014, Playful announced Lucky's Tale as a third-person platformer designed exclusively for the Rift and showed a playable demo at the Oculus booth at E3 2014, becoming one of the first studios to sign an exclusive content partnership with Oculus VR.[6]

Bettner and design lead Dan Hurd said in March 2015 that the team built "over 30" prototypes (38, according to the episode summary) over three to four months to learn what worked in VR before settling on a third-person platformer.[20] Their conclusion was that gameplay felt most compelling within arm's reach of the viewer, so Playful enlarged the rendered interpupillary distance to make the player feel like a giant looking at a miniature world, which brought the whole level into that zone. The camera's motion parameters were tuned within what they called a narrow band of comfort, since fast acceleration or sudden movement caused discomfort, and level layouts were changed (including teleporters that avoid backtracking) rather than moving the camera aggressively.[20] Bettner also said that focusing on a moving character rather than first-person locomotion reduced motion sickness.[18] The earliest version of the concept was a prototype called Super Capsule Bros. with a blocky capsule protagonist; the character went through four or five major iterations before becoming Lucky the fox.[21]

An updated demo at GDC 2015 had two complete levels, a tutorial area called Lucky's Home and a darker level called The Swamp with a boss encounter, running on the DK2 with an Xbox 360 controller. Playful retained ownership of the Lucky's Tale intellectual property under its Oculus deal.[14] In October 2015 the studio, then about 40 full-time staff, raised US$25 million from undisclosed investors, and Bettner said the Rift was "where we're focusing practically all of our attention".[22] According to UploadVR's account of the game's history, Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe played a November 2015 build for two hours and then proposed making the game exclusive and bundling it with the Rift.[21] On December 30, 2015, Oculus announced that the game, which it described as an Oculus Studios title, would be included free with every Rift, and Oculus founder Palmer Luckey wrote that the company "always believed there was an opportunity for platformers in VR".[1][23]

Remaster

Playful released a remastered version on Quest 2 on November 18, 2021, without prior announcement. It updated lighting and rendering, remixed the audio, optimized shaders, textures and lightmaps for the Quest 2 hardware, and imported the tighter movement mechanics and the updated Lucky character model from New Super Lucky's Tale.[7][19] Playful communications manager David Calkins said at the time that the studio "didn't initially set out to make one of virtual reality's first 3rd-person platformers" and that the game grew out of its rapid prototyping.[7] The Quest release supports Touch controllers and does not include cross-buy with the Rift version, and Playful said it had no plans for a version on the original Quest.[19] SteamVR and PlayStation VR versions of the remaster were announced on December 2, 2021.[24]

Release

Platform Release date Notes
Oculus Rift March 28, 2016 Launch title; included free with every Rift headset, which shipped with an Xbox One controller, sensor and Oculus Remote for US$599[2]
Meta Quest 2 November 18, 2021 Remastered version, US$19.99 on the Quest store; not available for the original Quest[7][19]

Oculus opened Rift pre-orders on January 6, 2016, at US$599 with shipping from March 28, 2016 to 20 countries; every unit came with Lucky's Tale, and pre-orders also received access to EVE: Valkyrie through its Founder's Pack.[2] Lucky's Tale remained part of the Rift package after the launch period: the Rift + Touch bundle introduced in July 2017 at US$499 (US$399 during the Summer of Rift sale) included it among six free titles alongside Medium, Toybox, Quill, Dead and Buried and Robo Recall.[27]

Road to VR reported the remaster's price as US$20 on Quest 2 and PlayStation VR, with SteamVR and Viveport versions also released.[9] The Steam version is listed as VR-only with 17 achievements, and its minimum requirements are a Windows 10 PC with an Intel Core i5-3550 or AMD FX 8150, 8 GB of RAM, a GeForce GTX 780 or Radeon R9 290, and 7 GB of storage.[8] As of September 2026 the game is still sold on the Meta Horizon Store for Quest 2 at US$19.99, and the Rift PC version is listed at US$14.99.[28][29]

Reception

Aggregator or outlet Score Notes
Metacritic 66 / 100 14 critic reviews, "mixed or average"[10]
OpenCritic 71 Top Critic Average from 18 reviews; 50% of critics recommend[30]
Destructoid 7.5 / 10 Chris Carter, March 28, 2016[16]
PC Gamer 72 / 100 As listed on Metacritic[10]
Game Informer 6.5 / 10 Andrew Reiner, April 22, 2016[17]
IGN 6 / 10 As listed on Metacritic[10]
GameSpot 5 / 10 As listed on Metacritic[10]

Critics split on whether the game's simplicity was a strength. In its launch-day review, UploadVR's Joe Durbin wrote that "every little detail in Lucky's Tale feels like it was designed from the ground up to specifically succeed inside of a VR headset", praised a camera that avoided motion sickness without feeling sluggish, and faulted the low difficulty and the paw-print gating that forces replays to progress.[15] Destructoid's Chris Carter called the game "solid" with an audience, praised the double jump and the final boss, and criticized the replay requirements and some backtracking sections that needed awkward neck positioning.[16] Game Informer's Andrew Reiner gave it 6.5 out of 10, writing that the small move set never expands and that the level design lacks variety, while crediting its polish and its use of scale in the opening villain reveal.[17] Road to VR's launch coverage noted the store's "Moderate" comfort rating and described the arm's-length camera as a way around the locomotion discomfort that many first-person VR games faced.[5] In December 2016 UploadVR called Lucky "the Mario of the Oculus Rift", since his picture appeared on the box of the headset that ran his game.[31]

The remastered Steam version had a "Very Positive" user rating (89% of 73 reviews) as of September 2026, and the Quest store listing showed 4.6 stars from 473 ratings.[8][28]

Non-VR sequels

Super Lucky's Tale, a flat-screen successor without VR support, was announced at Microsoft's E3 2017 briefing on June 11, 2017, and released on November 7, 2017 for Xbox One and Windows 10 as an Xbox Play Anywhere title, published by Microsoft Studios.[32][12] When asked about VR, a Playful representative told Road to VR that there was "no announcement at this time regarding VR plans for the game".[33] Playful director Dan Hurd wrote at launch that the sequel kept the original's accessible control scheme while adding new abilities.[12]

New Super Lucky's Tale, an expanded version of the 2017 game that Playful called "the definitive Lucky experience", was released for Nintendo Switch on November 8, 2019, and is sold by Playful for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox and PC storefronts.[11][34] A PlayStation 5 version published by PQube released on March 26, 2026, with 4K visuals, up to 120 frames per second and a US$4.99 upgrade for PlayStation 4 owners.[13] The Quest 2 remaster of the VR game borrowed its character model and movement tuning from this version.[7]

Current status

As of September 2026 Playful Studios lists the remastered VR Lucky's Tale as available alongside New Super Lucky's Tale, Creativerse and the upcoming Wildcard.[35]
