Little Nightmares VR: Altered Echoes is a single-player virtual reality horror puzzle adventure game developed by Iconik, a French VR studio, and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Bandai Namco describes it as "the first ever first-person Virtual Reality Little Nightmares experience".[1] The player controls Dark Six, who searches for a way to reunite with the series protagonist Six.[1][2][3] Bandai Namco announced the game with a teaser at its Little Nightmares Showcase on 24 June 2025 and released it on 24 April 2026 for PlayStation VR2, Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S, and PC VR headsets through SteamVR.[4][2]
The earlier Little Nightmares games use a side-on view. In Altered Echoes the player sees the oversized world from a child's height, and the developers described scale as "a core mechanic" of the game.[5] Critics praised its atmosphere, sound and sense of scale, while reviewers criticized its limited comfort options at launch and its stealth and puzzle design. A May 2026 update added smooth turning and, on PC, an option to remove the hood vignette.[6][7]
Gameplay
The game is played in first person with tracked motion controllers.[8] Bandai Namco describes it as a "dark atmospheric adventure-puzzle game" in which the player solves puzzles, explores, climbs and handles objects with their hands, and avoids the hostile Residents of the series.[1] Its store description promises "intricate puzzles, hidden paths, and secrets".[8] A music box guides the player through the game.[9]
The game keeps the series' hide-and-seek stealth structure.[6] In UploadVR's review, Mike Johnson described sneaking, running, hiding and crawling past enemies, distracting them to clear a path, chase sequences, and climbing and zip-lining sections. He found the stealth mechanics "bang-average" and said the game's presentation lifted them. The review also noted collectible music sheets, an autosave system, and a death that "simply fades out" rather than showing a death animation.[6] At a GDC 2026 demo on PlayStation VR2, UploadVR played a train station and train car level in which the player hides from the Conductor and hungry adult passengers. Puzzles in that demo included finding switches and repairing fuses, and security cameras changed from green to red when they spotted the player.[10]
Movement and comfort
Movement uses the thumbstick, with no teleport option.[6] The developers said they chose smooth joystick movement because its speed control helps keep tension in chase sequences and stresses the size of the environment.[5] The character's hood is shown at the edge of the view as a permanent vignette. In March 2026, Bandai Namco said the game had been "designed with the hood enabled at all times" and that "Smooth rotation will not be available".[2] At launch, turning was snap turning only, with no setting for the turn angle; the game also had a crouch button and a height adjustment for seated play.[6]
The May 2026 update changed both decisions. It added smooth turning with presets of 0.5x, 1x (default), 1.5x, 2x and 3x, and an option to disable the hood and vignette on PC only, which Bandai Namco attributed to performance limitations on the other platforms. The update also adjusted climbing interactions, collisions, enemy behavior during investigations and chases, and the visibility of nearby and held objects.[7][11]
Story
The player controls Dark Six, whom Bandai Namco describes as a fragmented being who believes she is a piece of Six's personality left behind after Six was abducted by the Thin Man.[1] Dark Six searches for Six inside the Transmission, which the PlayStation Blog describes as "a dimension of sight and sound" in which "gravity is optional".[9] The game takes place in different locations within the Pale City.[2] The story connects with both Little Nightmares and Little Nightmares II, and characters from those games, including the Thin Man, the Teacher and the Conductor, appear.[9][1] Bandai Namco says players do not need to have played the earlier games to follow it.[2]
Development
Iconik is an independent studio in La Ciotat, France, led by Julien Guellerin and Benjamin Masnieres, which makes VR and AR games.[12] Road to VR identified its earlier VR games as Hunting VR and King Pong.[13] Bandai Namco's Q&A says the game was "developed from the ground up by a team specializing in VR games".[2]
In an interview Meta published on launch day, the Iconik team said they used baked lighting instead of heavy dynamic lighting to keep visual quality high without hurting performance, and that the music is adaptive and "evolves in real time depending on the intensity of the situation".[5] On Meta Quest the game runs at 72 Hz by default, with 80 Hz and 90 Hz options; on PlayStation VR2 it is "Fixed at 90 Hz with no reprojection".[2]
The June 2025 teaser was 45 seconds long and showed the series' music box, without revealing whether the game would be played in first or third person.[13] UploadVR reported that Bandai Namco confirmed no studio, platforms or release window at the announcement.[4] Bandai Namco revealed the release date, platforms and first-person gameplay on 12 March 2026, and published a Q&A naming Iconik as the developer the same day.[9][2][14] A playable demo was shown at GDC 2026.[10]
Release
Bandai Namco gave 24 April 2026 as the release date on all platforms.[2] The Steam store page lists the PC release as 23 April 2026, and UploadVR published its review on that date.[8][6] At launch the Meta Quest version cost US$29.99 on the Meta Horizon Store.[5] The Steam listing has a regular US price of US$29.99.[8]

Reception
As of October 2026, Metacritic gives the PlayStation 5 version a score of 68 out of 100 from 13 critic reviews ("mixed or average") and the PC version 80 out of 100 ("generally favorable"), with five PC critic reviews listed, four of them scored.[15][16] OpenCritic lists a Top Critic Average of 74 from 24 critic reviews, with 50% of critics recommending the game.[17]

UploadVR's Mike Johnson called it "the best VR horror game in quite some time" and said it "nails the scale of this world", with strong sound design and score. He criticized the limited VR interactions, the lack of smooth turning and adjustable comfort settings, and a sprint that needs constant thumbstick pressure. He finished it in about four hours across five chapters.[6] Marcus Kenneth of CGMagazine praised the tension and sound design but wrote that the game becomes predictable early, with a repetitive puzzle pattern and enemy behavior that grows readable, and that it "doesn't evolve much beyond that initial hook".[18] Lou Sytsma of COGconnected praised the feeling of being small and powerless but said the forced hood vignette and missing smooth turning reduced immersion; he also reported that the dim lighting made mura more visible on PlayStation VR2's display.[19] Metacritic quotes Multiplayer.it calling the game "a huge wasted opportunity".[20]
