Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades 2 (also written Hot Dogs, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades 2, abbreviated H3VR2) is an upcoming virtual reality first-person shooter developed by RUST LTD. and published by RUST LTD. and Creature Label. It is the sequel to Hot Dogs, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades (H3VR), a PC VR firearms sandbox that entered Steam Early Access in 2016.[1][2] The player controls a sentient hot dog in a procedurally generated megastructure called the Facility, with extraction-style runs alongside competitive, arcade, training and sandbox modes.[3]
Unlike the original, a PC VR game, the sequel is also built for standalone Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S headsets. It was announced on 6 May 2026 during the Creature Feature & Friends showcase.[2][4] At Meta Connect 2026 on 23 September 2026, Meta announced a 12 November 2026 release on Quest 3 and 3S and opened pre-orders at 10% off. The PC VR version on Steam is planned for the second half of 2027.[5][6] As of 29 September 2026 the game has not been released.
Gameplay
The player is "The Handy", described by RUST LTD. as "Part field engineer. Part tactical operator. All Beef." The core mode, the Facility, sends the player from a base into a procedurally generated megastructure that the studio describes as "endlessly reconfiguring" and "slowly tearing itself apart". Each run follows the loop the press kit summarizes as "Deploy. Fight. Loot. Extract.": the player picks a loadout, fights the Facility's inhabitants, loots what they can and extracts to their base to build up an armory, unlocking new gear, challenges and upgrades between runs.[3][1] Road to VR described the sequel as a "full fledged" extraction shooter and noted that, as in the original, the enemies are hot dog-based characters.[2] UploadVR reported that the Facility can also be played in a more casual, arcade-like setting.[4]
Other modes carry over the original's open-ended structure. RUST LTD. lists a Certification Range for players new to firearms, plus Competition, Arcade Shooting and Sandbox play.[3] In the announcement, the studio said the competitive Combat mode gives each player "the same run" for online leaderboards, alongside daily challenges and runs, with guns, gear, cosmetics and toys to unlock.[2] UploadVR described a Learning mode meant for players unfamiliar with firearm handling, which the site noted had been a point of friction for newer players of the first game, and reported that weapons can be tested on ranges before a run.[4]
Firearm handling remains the focus. The studio's feature list promises more realism, more complex gun handling, more ballistics depth and more authentic audio than the first game.[3] On Steam the game is listed as single-player, VR-only and requiring tracked motion controllers through SteamVR.[1] MIXED reported that the Meta Horizon Store listing describes it as a single-player game rated 7+ for mild violence that does not require an internet connection.[7]
Development
RUST LTD., the studio behind the first game, is led by founder and principal developer Anton Hand.[2] The studio's press kit credits Hand with game direction, art, design and voice, lists Adam Liszkiewicz, Lucas Miller and Luke Noonan as the other RUST LTD. members, and names a further H3VR2 team of twelve developers. Creature, Mad Wave Audio, Meta and Triangular Pixels are listed as partners, and the game is made in Unity.[3] In Hand's words, the featurette on melee combat was presented by "Zach (from Vertigo1/2 fame)".[8]
In the Steam announcement, the studio called the game "a ground-up rebuild of everything you love about H3" rather than an add-on, expansion or port, and said it had been built "in secret for over two years".[9] Hand told Road to VR that the sequel had been in development for about two and a half years and that Meta had given the studio "a significant amount of support". He had long maintained that the original could not run on standalone hardware, and said of the newer headset: "Quest 3 is 100% an 'over the power threshold to be truly interesting' device." He added that making the game run on it had still required "a significant, absolutely top class engineering team". According to Hand, the studio targets 72 fps on Quest 3 so that the game does not have to run in constant space-warp.[2]
After the announcement, the studio released a series of video featurettes roughly every two weeks, each covering one system; topics included hands, magazines, melee combat, sandbox play, inventory and loot, attachment systems and the "Sosig Combat Agents" enemies.[10][11][8][12][13] A mini-featurette teasing melee combat was also shown at the VR Games Showcase on 23 June 2026, where the game was still listed without a release date.[14]
Work on the sequel ran alongside the first game's exit from Early Access. Hot Dogs, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades reached its 1.0 release (Update 120) on Steam on 4 July 2026.[15][16] Hand told Road to VR in May that RUST LTD. would keep supporting the first game with bug fixes and platform maintenance "for the foreseeable future".[2]
Release
The game was revealed on 6 May 2026 with a trailer at the Creature Feature & Friends showcase and opened for wishlists on Steam and the Meta Horizon Store the same day.[4][2] On 23 September 2026 Meta used its Connect games roundup to set the Quest launch for 12 November 2026 and open pre-orders at a 10% discount.[5] According to UploadVR, Hand announced the same schedule in a video on his YouTube channel with an updated trailer.[6] MIXED reported that the Horizon Store listing reads "Coming 12 Nov at 10 PST".[7]
| Platform | Release | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S | 12 November 2026 (scheduled) | Pre-orders open at 10% off[5][6] |
| PC VR via Steam | Second half of 2027 (planned) | Steam page lists the release date as "To be announced"[6][1] |
According to UploadVR, Hand said the Steam version will have enhanced graphics, "comprehensive" hardware support and a dedicated modding framework, and that RUST LTD. will recruit a testing team from its community to verify PC VR headsets. Hand described the game as a "pseudo-live service": the studio plans to add two new biomes per year and to sell new game modes, sandbox packs and licensed content as paid DLC.[6]
