Ghosts of Tabor is a virtual reality extraction shooter developed by Combat Waffle Studios and published by Beyond Frames Entertainment. Players scavenge for weapons and supplies, complete tasks, and attempt to extract from a map alive while facing both other players and computer-controlled enemies. The game draws on the extraction-survival format of flatscreen titles such as Escape from Tarkov, DayZ, and ARMA, adapted for room-scale Virtual Reality.[1][2]
Ghosts of Tabor launched in early access on Steam and Meta's App Lab on March 20, 2023, graduated to the main Meta Quest Store on February 8, 2024, and later released on Pico headsets and PlayStation VR2. By the time of its PSVR2 launch in May 2025 it had sold more than one million units and generated over US $30 million in revenue, and Meta listed it as the 30th best-selling Quest game of all time.[3][4]
Gameplay
Ghosts of Tabor is an extraction shooter that mixes player-versus-player and player-versus-environment combat (PvPvE). A session places the player on one of several maps to scavenge for gear, weapons, attachments, ammunition, medical supplies, food, and water, then reach an extraction point to keep the collected loot. Failing to extract, or being killed, results in the loss of carried equipment.[5][2]
The game can be played solo or in co-op squads of up to three players, with computer-controlled enemies populating the maps alongside other human players.[6] Between raids, players manage an inventory and base, craft items, and upgrade weapons. Firearms are handled physically through the Tracked Motion Controllers: reloading, chambering rounds, and attaching modifications are performed by hand rather than through menus.[6][5]
Cross-platform multiplayer is enabled by default across all supported devices and can be toggled in the settings.[5] To address cheating, Combat Waffle Studios built a custom anti-cheat system named Tomahawk, which the studio said detected and blocked hundreds of cheaters in its first week of operation.[3]
Development
Combat Waffle Studios is a United States based developer led by chief executive Scott Albright.[7] Reinaldo Vieira is credited as the studio's chief development officer and lead game developer.[8] The publisher Beyond Frames Entertainment, based in Stockholm, Sweden, described Combat Waffle as a military veteran-owned studio when it announced the publishing partnership.[1] Ghosts of Tabor is built on Unreal Engine, and the team used the RenderDoc graphics debugger during performance optimisation for standalone headsets.[8]
By launching on App Lab, Meta's distribution channel for unlisted Quest apps, and on Steam Early Access in March 2023, the developers built revenue and a player base before the title reached the curated Quest Store. Albright said that "getting the game into the hands of players early in closed tests has been the very foundation of our efforts to gain traction."[8][7] The PlayStation VR2 port was handled by the studio VRMonkey.[3]
The game remained in early access on Steam as of mid-2026, with the developers stating they planned to stay in early access until all major features were implemented.[2]
Release
Ghosts of Tabor first appeared as an open alpha on Steam Early Access and Meta App Lab on March 20, 2023.[2] After more than US $10 million in combined App Lab and Steam revenue across its first 325 days, it graduated to the main Meta Quest Store on February 8, 2024.[2][6] Releases on Pico headsets followed in May 2024 and on PlayStation VR2 on May 7, 2025, after the PSVR2 version had been delayed multiple times from an initial 2023 target.[9][5]
| Platform | Date | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Early Access (PC VR) | March 20, 2023 | Open alpha; remained in early access as of 2026[2] |
| Meta App Lab | March 20, 2023 | Unlisted Quest release; over US $10M in 325 days[2] |
| Meta Quest Store | February 8, 2024 | Graduated from App Lab; App Lab owners migrated automatically[6] |
| Pico | May 2024 | Cross-play with other platforms[9] |
| PlayStation VR2 | May 7, 2025 | Port by VRMonkey; targets 90 fps with foveated rendering[3][4] |
On PlayStation VR2, the port targets 90 fps and supports eye-tracked foveated rendering at launch, with adaptive trigger support for select weapons added in a post-launch patch.[4][3] The base PSVR2 game launched at US $25, alongside paid starter-pack bundles.[5]
Reception
Ghosts of Tabor was a commercial success well before its console launch. Beyond Frames reported US $3 million in App Lab gross revenue by August 2023, US $10 million in combined App Lab and Steam revenue over the title's first 325 days, and more than 500,000 unique players by the February 2024 Quest Store launch, with over 120,000 monthly active players at that point.[7][2][6] By September 2024 the studio said life-to-date revenue had passed US $20 million and the game had 835,000 registered players, averaging sessions of roughly 120 minutes; its Discord community had grown to about 113,000 members, which the publisher characterised as the largest VR shooter community on the platform.[9] At the May 2025 PSVR2 launch, the game had surpassed one million units sold and US $30 million in revenue, and Meta ranked it as the 30th best-selling Quest game of all time.[3][4]
User reviews were broadly positive during early access: the game held a 4.4 out of 5 user rating on Meta App Lab and a "Mostly Positive" overall rating on Steam from more than 5,000 reviews as of early 2024.[2] Road to VR described Ghosts of Tabor as "arguably becoming the premier extraction shooter in VR to date" and "one of Quest's best-selling games of all time."[5] Reviewing the PSVR2 port, the German VR outlet MIXED said the version made a solid first impression, ran smoothly, and produced a sharp image, while noting that distant objects still showed some aliasing.[10]
