Bad Inmate is a physics-based prison escape sandbox game for virtual reality headsets, developed and published by HyperVR Games, a studio based in Riga, Latvia. Players are placed in a prison and try to break out by sneaking past guards, stealing keys, crawling through unsealed passages and turning ordinary objects into escape tools.[1][2]

The game was announced on 31 August 2026 and is scheduled to release on Meta Quest and PlayStation VR2 on 15 October 2026. A SteamVR version is planned for a later, unannounced date.[1][2] As of 6 October 2026 the game has not been released, and no price has been announced on its store pages.[3][4][5]

Gameplay

Bad Inmate is a single-player game played with tracked motion controllers.[5][4] HyperVR Games describes it as a sandbox in which almost everything can be picked up, used, thrown or hidden, and in which there is no single correct way to escape.[1][5] The player is guided by an inmate ally whom the studio describes as unpredictable; the store listings describe him as a mysterious man in the wall whose plans are weird.[1][5][4] Examples given by the developer include digging with a spoon, distracting someone with a dumbbell, stealing keys and throwing food.[1][4]

Each in-game day, the player can either work on the escape plan or take part in other prison activities. The press release lists trading favors with other inmates, sports in the prison yard and funding another inmate's moonshine operation.[1] Other inmates have their own agendas and alliances, and the player can befriend, betray or fight them.[1][2] Fights use a physics-driven, full-contact combat system with ragdoll physics in which everyday objects can be used as weapons, and a crafting system lets players combine objects into new tools.[1][2] The yard includes basketball, pull-ups and weightlifting.[1][2] According to the PlayStation Store listing, failed escape attempts lead the player to try again with a different plan.[4]

The PlayStation Store listing states that the game requires PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers, supports standing and room-scale play with a minimum play area of 2 m x 2 m, and can be played offline.[4] On Steam it is listed as VR only, with English interface, audio and subtitles, and support for Steam Achievements.[5]
