Assetto Corsa is a racing simulator for Windows PC developed by the Italian studio Kunos Simulazioni. It entered Steam Early Access on 8 November 2013 and reached version 1.0 on 19 December 2014; versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, published by 505 Games, followed in August 2016.[1][2][3][4] The game recreates licensed road and racing cars on circuits that Kunos built with laser scanning, and its physics model simulates details such as tyre flat spots and tyre heat cycles with graining and blistering.[5]

The PC version has supported virtual reality headsets for most of its life. It ran on the Oculus Rift DK1 development kit in 2013, gained Oculus Rift DK2 support in its October 2014 release candidate, added work-in-progress support for version 1.3 of the Oculus Rift SDK in May 2016, and added native OpenVR support for the HTC Vive and OSVR HDK in March 2017.[6][7] Its Steam store page lists it as "VR Supported" and compatible with SteamVR and Oculus PC headsets.[5]

Gameplay

Assetto Corsa has a career mode, special events and challenges, and customizable single-player and multiplayer sessions. These include quick races, custom championships and race weekends with practice, qualifying and race sessions, as well as drag races and drift challenges.[5] Kunos provides four driving assist profiles (gamer, racer, pro and a fully customizable profile), setup options, telemetry for data analysis, simulated rubber build-up on the track surface, and a time-of-day system that calculates the sun position from each circuit's geographic coordinates and the chosen date.[5] The official website lists career mode, practice, special events, single race, race weekend, drift mode, drag racing and multiplayer among its modes.[8]

The game works with a keyboard, a gamepad, a joystick, steering wheels including professional devices, and common motion systems. Besides VR, the Steam page lists triple-monitor view, TrackIR and 3D Vision support.[5] Licensed manufacturers named on the store page include Abarth, Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Mercedes, Pagani and Porsche; circuits include Monza, Silverstone, Imola, Mugello, Spa and Brands Hatch, plus a historical version of Monza with its high-speed banked oval.[5] The game can be modified with the same editing tools Kunos used to build it.[5]

Virtual reality support

Road to VR reported in 2017 that Assetto Corsa had supported the first Oculus Rift development kit (DK1) in 2013, when the simulator itself was still in early development.[6] Early Access patch notes from that period include VR fixes, such as a fix for a broken right-side image on the Oculus in update 0.3 of 6 December 2013.[9]

Oculus Rift DK2

The 1.0.0 Release Candidate, published on 15 October 2014, added support for the Oculus Rift DK2.[7] In a hands-on published a week later, Road to VR's Paul James wrote that the first RC1 release was broken on the DK2, with poor scale, an incorrect field of view and no stereoscopy, but was quickly patched. Once in a race, he found positional tracking accurate and the frame rate a steady 75 FPS, which he said gave a judder-free experience "for the most part", and he praised the stereoscopic rendering of cockpit details. The patched build still had no VR menu support, which made the menus difficult to use while wearing the headset. He also noted that mirrors were rendered as flat textures without parallax and that the DK2's low pixel density made distant objects hard to read.[10]

Oculus Rift SDK 1.3

Version 1.6, released on 18 May 2016, listed "Oculus Rift SDK 1.3 (WIP Pre Alpha)" in its changelog.[11] According to Road to VR, the follow-up v1.6.1 update that month allowed full interaction with the in-game interface and the HUD "apps" from inside the headset.[6] Later updates continued to adjust the VR mode. Version 1.10 (22 November 2016) placed the cockpit camera at the driver's eye position in VR and enabled camera shake and g-force movements for the Oculus mode.[12] Version 1.11 (20 December 2016) was announced with "VR usability improvements" and disabled the pit stop animation for VR users; version 1.14 (18 May 2017) enabled it again for Oculus users.[13][14]

OpenVR

Update 1.13, released on 22 March 2017, added "OpenVR/Vive support (beta)" along with fixes for Oculus users and a fix for flag rendering in VR.[15] Before this, Vive owners had to use the Revive compatibility hack to play in VR. Road to VR found that the native OpenVR mode performed better on the Vive than Revive had, but it still showed world-scale problems, and the head-rotation audio feature added in v1.12.3 did not work under OpenVR. The outlet concluded that the native Rift support remained the stronger VR experience.[6] The official website describes the game as offering "basic support for virtual reality technology".[8]

Development

Kunos Simulazioni developed the game at its research and development office inside the Vallelunga racing circuit in Italy, which the studio says let it work with real racing drivers and teams.[5] Digital Bros describes Kunos as a company based in Formello, Italy, with years of experience building simulators for Italian car manufacturers.[16] The game uses a DirectX 11 graphics engine.[5]

During Early Access, Kunos promised an update with new cars, tracks and features every two weeks.[1] The 1.0.0 Release Candidate declared the game "feature complete" and added visual and mechanical damage, a new audio engine and the career mode.[7] Updates continued after the 1.0 release; version 1.16, released on 20 December 2017, added the Laguna Seca circuit and seven cars, including the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio.[17][5]

In 2015, 505 Games, the publishing division of Digital Bros, signed an agreement for the console versions.[16] Digital Bros announced its purchase of Kunos Simulazioni on 20 January 2017 and confirmed it on 13 March 2017, acquiring 100% of the company for a total of 4,341,500 euros in cash and shares. The company said at the time that the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions had sold more than 1.4 million copies.[16] The sellers were the studio's two founding owners, Stefano Casillo and Marco Massarutto,[16] who kept their roles at the studio.[18]

The console versions had been scheduled for earlier dates before they were delayed twice; PlayStation LifeStyle reported that the developers wanted to deliver "the most polished experience" for sim racing fans when the first delay was announced.[3] The Ultimate Edition on Steam contains 178 cars and 40 track layouts across nineteen circuits, combining the base game with the three Dream Packs, the three Porsche Packs, the Tripl3, Red, Ready To Race and Japanese packs, and the Ferrari 70th Anniversary DLC.[19] As of September 2026, the base game sells for US$19.99 on Steam, where 505 Games is listed as publisher.[5]

Reception

Platform Metacritic score Critic reviews
Windows 85/100[20] 17
PlayStation 4 73/100[21] 35
Xbox One 63/100[22] 10

The PC version was rated higher than the console versions on Metacritic.[20][21][22] Reviewing the PC release for Eurogamer, Martin Robinson wrote that "when it comes to replicating the simple, intoxicating pleasure of driving, no game does it better right now." He criticized the career mode, the event structure and the convoluted online server booking system, but praised the handling, the factory-setting driver assists, steering wheel support and the modding community.[23] IGN Italia gave the PC version 95 out of 100.[20]

On the VR side, Road to VR's 2014 DK2 preview described the game as "a flawed revelation": once a race started the VR experience was "nearly flawless", but reaching it through the menus with the headset on was "painful".[10]

Successors

Kunos has since released other games in the series that are separate products with their own VR support. Assetto Corsa Competizione, built on Unreal Engine 4, was announced for Steam Early Access with VR support planned for October 2018.[24] It entered Early Access on 12 September 2018, and VR support arrived with Early Access Release 2 on 10 October 2018; its Steam page lists it as "VR Supported".[25][26][27] Assetto Corsa EVO entered Steam Early Access on 16 January 2025 with VR and triple-screen support.[28]
