AjnaLens AjnaXR is a virtual reality head-mounted display released in 2023. It was developed by the Indian company AjnaLens and is a standalone headset that uses color passthrough cameras to combine virtual reality with mixed reality views of the user's surroundings.[1][2] AjnaLens unveiled the headset at CES 2023, where it was named a CES Innovation Awards honoree in the Virtual & Augmented Reality category.[1][3]

The headset was launched in India on 15 August 2023 in two models, the AjnaXR SE and the AjnaXR Pro. The SE has a combined resolution of 3200 x 1600 pixels, the same as the standard edition shown at CES; the Pro has a 4560 x 2280 display, the resolution AjnaLens gave for its enterprise edition at CES.[4][2] Both models use a Qualcomm XR2+ Gen 1 chip, run Android 12 and are compatible with AjnaLens' AjnaVidya learning platform; the company presented them as tools for training and building a skilled workforce in India.[4][5][6] The higher-resolution enterprise edition has a separate article, AjnaXR Enterprise Edition.

Announcement and release

CES 2023

AjnaLens presented the AjnaXR at CES 2023. The CES Innovation Awards listing describes it as "India's first true mixed reality headset designed for learners around the world", a pass-through VR device that combines AR and VR in one headset, with a Qualcomm XR2 chipset, Wi-Fi 6 connectivity and diopter lenses that let near-sighted users adjust for their prescription.[1]

Business Today reported the specifications given at the show: dual 2.1-inch F-LCD displays, a 95-108 degree field of view, a 90 Hz refresh rate, a 5500 mAh battery rated for more than three hours of use, adjustable IPD of 60-68 mm, adjustable diopter support, two RGB cameras, foveated rendering support and a weight of 390 grams. The standard version had a resolution of 3200 x 1600 pixels and the enterprise edition 4560 x 2280 pixels.[2] Interesting Engineering also reported eye tracking, used to reduce the rendering load on the processor, and repeated AjnaLens' claims that the AjnaXR was the lightest headset in its class and the first headset to feature diopter lenses.[3] Both claims came from AjnaLens.

Abhijit Patil, AjnaLens' co-founder and chief operating officer, said in Business Today's report: "With AjnaVidya and AjnaXR, we aim to provide an immersive learning experience with real-life tools to the trainee and help them get placed at a highly competitive pay scale globally."[2]

In his roundup of AR and VR news from CES 2023, the blogger behind The Ghost Howls described the AjnaXR as a lightweight VR headset with passthrough AR and noted that it came in consumer and enterprise versions, of which only the enterprise version had actually launched. He wrote that the enterprise model, with eye tracking, hand tracking and 2280 x 2280 pixels per eye, could be pre-ordered from the AjnaLens website for around US$1,200, with shipping expected in August 2023.[7]

Snapdragon Spaces

In May 2023 AjnaLens announced that it would build mixed reality training experiences with Qualcomm's Snapdragon Spaces XR developer platform, combining its AjnaVidya learning ecosystem with the AjnaXR hardware. Entrepreneur India listed the headset's features as high resolution, a lightweight design, color passthrough, hand tracking and object tracking.[8]

Launch in India

AjnaLens launched the AjnaXR SE and AjnaXR Pro on 15 August 2023 at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai. Both were sold through the AjnaLens website in a single black color.[4][6] Zee Business reported that the headsets were available for pre-order on the official website.[5]

Model Launch price (India, August 2023) Resolution Refresh rate Storage
AjnaXR SE Rs 84,999 3200 x 1600 90 Hz 128 GB
AjnaXR Pro (limited edition) Rs 1,15,499 4560 x 2280 72 Hz 256 GB

Fone Arena and Zee Business gave the Pro's price as Rs 1,15,499; PCQuest listed it at Rs 1,54,499.[4][5][6]

Patil said at the launch: "Our AjnaXR SE and AjnaXR PRO devices are a step towards that future. They show our commitment to pushing boundaries in training, learning and human development and demonstrating India's innovation on a global stage."[5]

Later developments

AjnaLens represented India at the Game Developers Conference 2024 in San Francisco, where it showed the AjnaVidya ecosystem and software including AjnaChakra OS. In its March 2024 report on the event, Business Today gave prices of Rs 1 lakh for the AjnaXR Pro and Rs 85,000 for the AjnaXR SE.[9] In a May 2024 press release distributed by PRNewswire, AjnaLens announced that the AjnaXR Pro was now designed, developed and manufactured in India.[10]

As of September 2026, the AjnaLens website lists three products: an "AjnaXR Enterprise" headset, which it describes as "Industrial-grade XR hardware engineered to perform in the most demanding high-stakes environments", AjnaAI smart glasses and AjnaAR glasses. The AjnaXR SE and AjnaXR Pro are not listed.[11]

Design and hardware

The AjnaXR SE has two 2.1-inch fast-switching LCD panels with a combined resolution of 3200 x 1600 pixels (1058 PPI), a 90 Hz refresh rate and a quoted field of view of 95-105 degrees. It uses pancake lenses, an adjustable interpupillary distance of 59-68 mm and diopter adjustment from 0 to 500 degrees, which AjnaLens says lets people use the headset without prescription glasses. Foveated rendering is listed as supported.[5][4]

Two 16-megapixel HDR RGB cameras provide what AjnaLens calls "ultra low-latency color pass through". The headset has inside-out six degrees of freedom tracking at a tracking frequency of 30 Hz, plus hand tracking.[5][4] The Qualcomm XR2+ Gen 1 chip has an octa-core Kryo 585 CPU and an Adreno 650 GPU, paired with 8 GB of RAM. The SE has 128 GB of storage.[4]

The SE weighs about 440 grams according to the launch specification, which also lists active cooling and "45 min use comfort". Physical controls are Home, Enter, volume and power buttons. The 5500 mAh battery is rated for more than three hours of use and supports QC 3.0 fast charging.[5] Connectivity includes a USB-C port, support for a PC VR cable and wireless streaming, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5. The SE has stereo speakers, an audio jack and a microphone.[5][4]

The CES column follows Business Today's report of the show specifications; the SE column follows the launch specification published by Zee Business and Fone Arena.[2][5][4]

Software and features

The headsets run Android 12 and support OpenXR.[4] AjnaLens positions them for training and learning: at launch both were described as supporting the AjnaVidya platform, an immersive learning ecosystem that the company says connects content creators and customers and offers AI-guided virtual training sessions.[6][8] At CES 2023, Business Today reported that AjnaVidya included an NFT marketplace and cloud-based processing.[2]

Reception

Coverage of the AjnaXR has come mostly from Indian business and technology outlets reporting the company's announcements. The Ghost Howls called the CES announcement notable because it showed an entrant in the XR hardware market from India, after years in which headset makers had come mainly from the United States, Europe and China.[7] Zee Business framed AjnaLens' headsets as competing with Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3, and pointed to the diopter lenses as a feature that lets people use the headset without prescription glasses.[5]
