Zero Caliber 2 is a virtual reality first-person military shooter developed and published by the independent studio XREAL Games. It is a sequel to the studio's 2018 game Zero Caliber VR and has a story campaign that can be played alone or in four-player co-op, plus competitive player-versus-player modes.[1][2] The studio is unrelated to the AR glasses maker Xreal.

The game launched on the Meta Quest platform on August 1, 2024.[3] A reworked PC VR edition, Zero Caliber 2 Remastered, followed on Steam on October 30, 2025, with more enemies, new AI behaviour and upgraded visual effects.[4][5] XREAL Games confirmed a PlayStation VR2 release of the Remastered edition the day before the VR Games Showcase of August 13, 2026, where a teaser gave October 2026 as the release month; as of 29 September 2026 the PlayStation version has not been released.[6][7][8]

Gameplay

Zero Caliber 2 is a linear, story-driven shooter set in a near future in which drinkable water has become the only real commodity and society has all but collapsed.[1] In the studio's description, players navigate "a fractured society plagued by conflict and the rise of the mysterious Talokii leader, Barak, devoted to the Aztec deity Tlaloc."[9] The story continues from the first game.[4][8]

The campaign has 12 missions. In Meta's launch post, XREAL Games marketing director Daniel Nyirfa said it takes more than eight hours to finish on average, while UploadVR's reviewer put it at roughly six hours, with missions lasting 20 to 30 minutes each.[3][1] The whole campaign can be played in co-op with up to four players. It has three difficulty levels plus a "super hardcore mode" for co-op.[3] Weapons are handled with tracked motion controllers. The Steam store page lists a large arsenal to unlock and character customization, and MIXED highlighted the range of weapons and attachments.[4][10] Nyirfa said that "the game now strikes a middle ground between full-on realism and arcade mechanics to maximize the fun factor."[3]

At launch the Quest version had three PvP modes (free-for-all, team deathmatch and Siege) on 10 maps.[3] UploadVR reported that PvP matches hold up to 10 players on Quest.[9] The PlayStation Store listing for the PS VR2 edition gives up to eight online players, with a PlayStation Plus subscription required for online play.[8] The Quest release also has native mod support.[1]

Zero Caliber 2 Remastered

The Steam edition was rebuilt rather than directly ported. XREAL Games reworked missions and combat scenarios and raised enemy counts. It also gave the AI new behaviours, so enemies use cover, flank and rush players who stay in one spot. Other changes include ragdoll physics, enemies that remain on the battlefield, dynamic shadows, and improved weapon effects, explosions, environments, lighting and vehicle animations.[5][11] The studio said crossplay with the Quest version "isn't feasible" because the Steam version was built "with a very different scope", so PC players cannot join Quest players online.[5][12] The Steam store lists a single-player campaign, online co-op campaign and online PvP, with seated, standing and room-scale play and English as the only language.[4]

Development

XREAL Games was founded in 2016 and describes itself as a Hungarian independent studio that makes VR games in Unreal Engine.[13] Its earlier game Zero Caliber VR entered Steam Early Access on November 9, 2018 and left Early Access on July 31, 2023.[14] A separate Quest version, Zero Caliber: Reloaded, was released on May 13, 2021; ahead of its launch, Road to VR reported that it was "basically a totally different game compared to the original PC version".[15][16] During 2023 the first game received new maps, visual upgrades, PvP crossplay between Quest and Steam, and official mod support.[2]

XREAL Games revealed Zero Caliber 2 at the UploadVR Winter Showcase in December 2023, targeting a 2024 release on PC VR and Quest.[2] The Quest version was first aimed at July 2024, then set for August 1 as a Quest exclusive. Pre-order customers could claim a "special version" of the PPSh-41 submachine gun. At launch, a Steam page was already live, but the studio told UploadVR that "we'd have to see a really high demand" before releasing on PC VR.[9]

In February 2025, alongside the game's eighth Quest patch, the studio said it had a working PC VR build and announced that it was working on a new Zero Caliber spin-off, without giving further details. Patch 8 added six challenges that unlock OSA-themed cosmetics.[17] In July 2025 XREAL Games set a Q3 2025 window for the Steam release, saying it "never intended to skip PC VR" but "needed time to fully commit". At that time it planned Zero Caliber 2 for PS VR2 in holiday 2025, depending on how the first game performed on the platform.[11] The first game reached PS VR2 on December 16, 2025, when UploadVR reported that no release window for the sequel on that headset was known.[18] At the same time, the studio released a quality-of-life update with new weapons for the Quest version.[18]

Release

Platform Edition Release Notes
Meta Quest Zero Caliber 2 August 1, 2024 Launch price US$29.99[1][3]
Steam (SteamVR) Zero Caliber 2 Remastered October 30, 2025 No crossplay with Quest[4][5]
PlayStation VR2 (PlayStation 5) Zero Caliber 2 Remastered October 2026 (announced) PlayStation Store lists the release date as to be determined[6][8]

UploadVR reported that the trailer and PlayStation Store listing show PS VR2 getting the Remastered edition rather than the original Quest release.[6] The PS VR2 listing requires the PS VR2 Sense controllers and a 2 m by 2 m minimum play area for room-scale play; as of 29 September 2026 its ESRB rating is pending.[8] Road to VR's showcase round-up describes the PS VR2 release as a "Cinematic VR shooter with an action-packed campaign, co-op and classic PvP."[7]

Reception

In its review of the Quest version, UploadVR gave Zero Caliber 2 four out of five stars. Reviewer Pete Austin praised the gunplay, the graphics and the audio. He criticized repetitive mission objectives and gun collision with walls, and noted the absence of teleport movement or vignette comfort settings. He also reported enemies disappearing and reappearing and occasional frame-rate drops.[1] MIXED called the Quest 3 version a fun arcade shooter that "still needs a lot of work", citing clumsy grabbing, clipping bugs, uneven enemy AI and repetitive environments, while praising its range of weapons and attachments.[10]

UploadVR's impressions of Zero Caliber 2 Remastered noted that "lighting, explosions, and large-scale effects have all received noticeable improvements," but found the force-grab mechanic "noticeably inconsistent" in the Steam version and reported that in-game chat cut out partway through a co-op session.[12] As of 29 September 2026, Metacritic lists no critic score for Zero Caliber 2 Remastered on PC.[19] On Steam, user reviews are rated "Mostly Positive" (79% of 438 reviews at the time of access).[4]
