Vrideo was a VR App for watching 360 Video and other immersive video, made by Vrideo, Inc. as the desktop client of its video-sharing service. It was released on Steam on 12 April 2016 as a free SteamVR application for the HTC Vive on Windows.[1] The service was also offered on other headsets, including the Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR, Google Cardboard and PlayStation VR.[2] Vrideo, Inc. announced that it was shutting down on 21 November 2016.[2][3]

Reviewed 9 October 2026. Checked the Steam listing (appid 457670), review counts, and the VentureBeat and UploadVR shutdown reports against each claim About review dates.

Overview

The app was a front end for the Vrideo video platform. According to its Steam listing, users could stream videos, view trending and recommended titles, browse content categories, search for videos and channels, and subscribe to channels. Account holders could like and dislike videos, keep playlists, and download videos for offline playback.[1] The Steam listing shows full controller support, tracked controller support and a VR-only requirement.[1]

Company and shutdown

Vrideo launched in beta in March 2015 under founder Alex Rosenfeld, and the company raised about US$2 million in funding.[3] Investors included Betaworks and Lerer Hippeau Ventures.[2] UploadVR reported about 700,000 installations of the service across headsets.[3]

In announcing the closure, Rosenfeld said the company had "stretched this modest funding as far as it could take us, especially in light of the rising costs associated with our growth."[3] VentureBeat noted that larger companies such as Facebook and Google were promoting their own 360-degree video offerings.[2]
