Unity AI is a suite of generative AI tools for the Unity Editor developed by Unity Technologies. Unity introduced it with the Unity 6.2 beta in May 2025 as the replacement for Unity Muse, its earlier set of AI tools launched in 2023, which Unity scheduled for retirement on October 1, 2025.[1][2] The suite centers on an in-editor assistant that answers questions about a project, writes code and carries out actions in the Editor, and on generators for sprites, textures, materials, cubemaps, 3D objects, terrain layers, sound clips and animation clips.[3][4] Later additions connect third-party AI coding agents to Unity: an AI gateway inside the assistant, a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, a command-line interface (CLI) and an official plugin for coding agents.[5]
From late July 2026, Unity began retiring the "Unity AI" brand name. It now describes each tool by its function and refers to them collectively as "Unity's AI tools", which remained in beta as of November 2026.[6][5] The 2025 version of Unity AI also included Inference Engine, a library for running AI models locally at runtime, which replaced Sentis; Unity said that its Unity ML-Agents Toolkit would be updated to be compatible with it.[1] In October 2025 Unity renamed the library back to Sentis.[7] A tutorial series on Meta's developer site, updated in June 2026, connected an AI coding tool to the Unity Editor through Unity's MCP integration to build a Meta Quest game, and Meta publishes an MCP extension that adds Quest-specific tools to Unity's MCP package.[8][9]
History
Unity Muse
Unity announced Unity Muse and Unity Sentis on June 27, 2023, as two AI platforms available in closed beta. It described Sentis as a cross-platform runtime inference engine for deploying AI models in Unity projects, and Muse as a set of tools, accessible in the Editor and on the web, for creating real-time 3D content faster.[10] One of the first tools was Muse Chat, which Unity said would speed up troubleshooting and access to information through a typed prompt; functions for creating assets and animations "with just a text prompt or a doodle" were to follow in the coming weeks. Unity also launched a dedicated AI marketplace on the Unity Asset Store that included "Verified Solutions", which it described as third-party tools, plug-ins and SDKs tested for compatibility and supported by Unity.[10]
At its Unite 2023 conference on November 16, 2023, Unity made Muse available in early access as a subscription costing US$30 per month, with unlimited use of all features during early access, which it expected to end in spring 2024.[11][12] The capabilities available at that point were Chat, Sprite and Texture. Behavior, which created behavior trees from a description of the desired character actions, Animate, which animated humanoid characters from text prompts, and Sketch, for collaborative mock-ups on the web, were in prerelease, with full support planned for later in 2024.[11] Unity said Muse was powered by its "custom-built, responsibly trained model" and that, after early access, it would itself defend subscribers against claims that Muse-generated assets infringed copyright.[11] According to Engadget, the sprite and texture tools were trained entirely on data and images that Unity owned or had licensed.[12]
In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz reported by PC Gamer, Marc Whitten, general manager of Unity Create, said the chat, texture and sprite tools all used "data and images that Unity owns or has licensed", and that Unity had applied a custom-built model to a "highly processed five million image data set". PC Gamer added that the chat tool still used external large language models to understand questions, while Whitten said its responses were built from first-party Unity resources or "consensually sourced" answers.[13]
In March 2024, 80 Level reported that Muse's texture generation had moved to a second-generation model, Photo-Real-Unity-Texture-2, which succeeded Photo-Real-Unity-Texture-1, a model 80 Level described as trained on licensed and Unity-owned data.[14] On April 23, 2024, Unity announced that all five Muse capabilities could be used inside the Editor. Muse Chat became an Editor package that could read project details such as the Unity version, active render pipeline, input system and target platforms; Muse Animate became available to all Muse users as an in-Editor prerelease package; and the LLM-powered Muse Behavior was opened to anyone using Muse.[15] Unity's Muse documentation states that Unity Muse would be retired on October 1, 2025, and replaced by Unity AI in Unity 6.2 and later.[2]
Unity AI in Unity 6.2
Unity introduced Unity AI with the first Unity 6.2 beta on May 15, 2025, as "our integrated suite of AI tools" for the Editor, and said that once Unity 6.2 reached general availability, Unity AI would replace both Muse and Sentis.[1] It had three components. Assistant answered questions about a project, generated code and could carry out agentic actions such as batch renaming files or placing several objects in a scene, and replaced Muse Chat. Generators created sprites, textures and animations and added sound generation, replacing Muse Sprite, Texture and Animate. Inference Engine replaced Sentis for local model inference.[1] The features were optional and were installed from an "AI" button in the Editor. Users received free Unity Points during the beta, which Unity said would expire at the end of the beta, when Unity AI would move to a paid Unity Points model. Unity AI was not available in some regions, including Russia and China.[1] The package changelogs record the first prereleases of the AI Generators package on March 21, 2025, and of the AI Assistant package, opened from Window > AI > Assistant, on April 11, 2025.[16][6]
Unity 6.2 became a production-supported release on August 12, 2025, with the Unity AI Beta included; Unity said all users who installed Unity AI would get free, unlimited Unity Points during the beta.[17] CG Channel reported that the key difference from Muse was that Unity AI used AI models developed by third parties, not only by Unity. Sprite generation used LoRAs from Scenario and Layer trained on the Stable Diffusion and Flux foundation models, texture generation kept Unity's own model, animation offered Unity's text-to-animation model alongside a video-to-animation model from Kinetix, and Assistant used language models from OpenAI's GPT series and Meta's Llama series.[18] According to the same report, Assistant and Generators ran in Unity Cloud while Inference Engine ran locally, and Unity AI did not require a separate subscription, unlike Muse; the report also described Inference Engine as the same product as Sentis under a new name.[18] Unity later reversed that rename: version 2.4.0 of the runtime package, released on October 22, 2025, renamed Inference Engine back to Sentis,[7] and Unity's AI tools page states that Sentis "remains active and serves as the engine for running neural network models natively within the Unity Runtime".[5] The AI guiding principles nevertheless still referred to "Inference Engine (formerly 'Sentis')" in their August 2026 version.[19]
At Unite 2025 in Barcelona in November 2025, Unity announced an upcoming AI Gateway, which it said would "bring agentic assistance to everything from prototyping to performance optimization".[20]
Unity AI betas in 2026
On January 12, 2026, Unity ended the 2025 beta and began a new beta of Unity AI, starting with Assistant. It required Unity 6.3 or later and an application through a sign-up form with limited places; the earlier beta packages stopped working that day, and points allocated to the legacy version no longer refreshed.[21] Unity said the new Assistant had two modes, Ask for answering questions and Agent, which routed prompts to dedicated agents that carry out tasks in the Editor, and that its orchestration could break complex tasks into multi-step resolutions. Generators gained UI Toolkit layouts generated from text prompts, a Skybox Generator that turns a prompt or image into cubemaps for skyboxes, and a 3D Model Generator that creates 3D models from a text prompt or reference image.[21] The later documentation describes these tasks under the names Cubemap Generator and 3D Object Generator.[22][23] The Assistant changelog for version 1.5.0-pre.1 (January 5, 2026) lists image and screenshot attachments, a permissions system for creating, modifying and deleting files, the Ask mode and code-editing tools; the Generators changelog for the same version number lists generation workflows integrated into the assistant, spritesheet generation and skybox materials created from cubemaps.[6][16] Version 2.0.0-pre.1 of the assistant package (March 3, 2026) merged the separate com.unity.ai.toolkit and com.unity.ai.generators packages into com.unity.ai.assistant and made its MCP tools and APIs public.[6]
On May 1, 2026, Unity opened the beta to all developers on Unity 6 and later.[24] The announcement listed Unity's own agent, with Plan mode, skills and rollback of changes; generators for placeholder materials, sounds, cubemaps and 2D and 3D assets; the AI gateway, for bringing a third-party agent into the assistant with the developer's own key; and the MCP server, for controlling the Editor from an IDE or another LLM application.[24] In a blog post on May 5, 2026, Unity said the tools were not Unity Muse, which it called "a separate, deprecated tool that used Unity first-party models", and that they were powered by third-party frontier models and required the project to be linked to Unity Cloud.[25]
Brand retirement and MCP deprecation
At Unite Seoul on July 21, 2026, Unity announced plans for Unity 7. The announcement said that a new CLI and public API would let artists, producers and developers validate assets, push builds and collaborate from their own tools without full Editor access, "while a free-to-use MCP will connect coding agents directly to Unity". Unity scheduled an early beta of Unity 7 for December 2026 and the full release for the first quarter of 2027.[26]
The assistant package stopped capping or gating MCP and gateway connections by entitlement limits in version 2.16.0-pre.1 (July 21, 2026), and replaced the "Unity AI" brand with descriptive language in its user-facing text in version 2.17.0-pre.1 (July 28, 2026).[6] Unity's credit terms, last updated on July 28, 2026, are titled "AI Credits Beta Terms" and state that they were formerly the "Unity AI Credits Beta Terms".[27] Unity's AI tools page states that the company is retiring the "Unity AI" brand name, describes each tool by its function (the in-editor AI assistant, the AI gateway, the MCP server, the official plugin and the CLI) and refers to them collectively as "Unity's AI tools".[5] The older name remained on some Unity pages: the AI guiding principles, last updated on August 19, 2026, are titled "Unity AI Guiding Principles", and the introductory AI page of the Unity 6.6 manual describes Unity AI as three areas, Generators, Assistant and Sentis.[19][28]
The documentation for version 2.18 of the assistant package and later marks the package's MCP server as deprecated and directs users to the Unity CLI instead.[29] Unity's migration guide states that the CLI's unity mcp command replaces the in-Editor server with the CLI's own MCP server, which is built on the Unity Pipeline package and uses the same protocol, so MCP clients connect in the same way. It lists the migration steps as installing the CLI, running unity pipeline install, running unity mcp configure with the name of the client, and installing Unity's skills for the agent with unity skill install. Third-party MCP packages for Unity installed from GitHub are not affected by the deprecation.[30]
Components
In-editor assistant
Unity's documentation describes the in-editor AI assistant as "a generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool integrated into the Unity Editor" that creates assets, automates workflows, analyzes performance and performs project actions from natural-language prompts.[3] It is installed from the Editor's AI menu or as the package com.unity.ai.assistant through the Package Manager, requires Unity 6000.0.76f1, Unity 6.3 (6000.3) or later, and is opened from Window > AI > Assistant.[31] The AI menu button appears in the Editor toolbar by default from Unity 6000.0.76f1 and can be hidden in the Editor's general settings, while Unity states that the tools themselves are not included by default and require a package installation.[19][5]
The assistant has three modes. Ask mode gives explanations and guidance using read-only tools. Plan mode produces a step-by-step plan, saved to the project, that the user reviews and approves before the assistant implements it in Agent mode. Agent mode performs actions such as creating objects or modifying assets; modifying actions require the user's approval and follow the user's permission settings.[4] Version 2.21.0-pre.1 (October 15, 2026) added a setting that lets the agent run unsafe commands without a per-command approval dialog.[6] For each task the user also picks a model tier: Unity Default, Unity Lite as a low-latency option, or Unity Ultra for complex tasks that need deeper reasoning.[31] Other features recorded in the changelog include checkpoints for rolling back changes and an MCP client for connecting the assistant to external MCP servers (both in 1.6.0-pre.3), skills loaded from the file system (2.5.0-pre.1) and tools that turn Figma designs into Unity user interfaces (2.7.0-pre.1).[6]
According to Unity's AI guiding principles, the assistant uses large language models to answer questions, generate code and run agentic actions. The principles list the Gemini series from Google, the Claude series from Anthropic, Kimi K3 from Kimi and the GLM series from Z.ai, each used at various stages of the assistant pipeline and hosted by Unity, and state that Unity may change model providers and models over time.[19] Unity describes "a Unity-specific LLM pipeline" that understands the project's Unity version, Unity structures such as GameObjects and prefabs, and the render pipeline.[19] Unity's AI tools page says the assistant can understand the scene, inspect GameObjects and components, help drive Editor actions and verify that changes behave as intended.[5]
Generators
The generators create sprites, textures, materials, cubemaps, 3D objects and terrain layers, as well as sound clips and animation clips.[3] They can be used from dedicated Generator windows or through the assistant.[23] The Cubemap Generator produces equirectangular maps from text prompts or reference images for use as cubemaps, skyboxes or reflection textures.[22] The 3D Object Generator creates a mesh from a reference image or a text prompt and saves it as a prefab containing the mesh and its materials, using the Hunyuan 3D 3.0 (Pro) model by default. Unity's documentation says the tool is best suited to simple, single-part props, and that the objects it creates have no subdivisions or separate moving parts and are not rigged or animated; when given only text, the assistant first generates a reference image and then creates the object from it (see Text-to-3D generation).[23] Unity's blog series on the beta also covers a Material Generator that creates physically based rendering (PBR) materials from text prompts.[25]
According to the AI guiding principles, the generators use several first-party Unity models as well as partner models, which run on third-party infrastructure and are accessed through partner APIs; the partner models are listed in Unity's third-party AI terms.[19] Those terms, last updated on July 28, 2026, name the following providers for the generators:[32]
| Generator | Provider | Models and outputs as described by Unity |
|---|---|---|
| Sprite | Layer AI, Inc. | FLUX foundation models with pre-trained LoRAs ("styles"); images from text and from image references, including hand-drawn doodles[32] |
| Sprite | Scenario, Inc. | FLUX, GPT-Image, Google Gemini and Seedream foundation models with pre-trained LoRAs; images, 3D models, skyboxes, textures, sound and video for spritesheet animation; some post-process refinements[32] |
| Animation | Uthana | Proprietary models that produce animations from prompts[32] |
Generated assets carry embedded "UnityAI" metadata, which Unity says makes them findable through Unity's search so that they can be managed or removed to comply with third-party rights, AI policies or regulations.[19] Organization owners and managers can turn the generators off in the Unity Dashboard while keeping the assistant, and version 2.12.0-pre.2 of the assistant package (June 12, 2026) added an explicit consent prompt before any generator task starts.[19][5][6]
AI gateway
The AI gateway, called the Unity AI Gateway in Unity's May 2026 blog post,[25] adds an agent selector to the assistant window and routes prompts to a third-party CLI coding agent, such as Claude Code, Cursor CLI, Codex CLI or Gemini CLI, which runs locally with the user's own provider credentials; Unity bundles its own versions of Codex CLI and Gemini CLI. Depending on the license and configuration, these agents can chat, generate code or act in the Editor through MCP tools.[33] The setup guide gives minimum versions of 2.1.45 for Claude Code and 2026.02.13 for Cursor CLI, and states that AI gateway and MCP access in the package require an eligible Unity subscription and an assigned seat.[34] Unity's AI tools page states that using a third-party agent through the gateway does not consume Unity credits.[5] In version 2.21.0-pre.1 the bundled Codex agent became codex-acp 0.9.5, which defaults to the gpt-5.3-codex model.[6]
MCP server and Unity CLI
In the assistant package, the MCP server works through a bridge that starts with the Editor and opens a local inter-process channel (named pipes on Windows and Unix sockets on macOS and Linux), and through a relay binary, installed in ~/.unity/relay/, that AI clients start as their MCP server process. Connections made through the AI gateway are approved automatically, while direct connections from external MCP clients need approval in Project Settings.[35] This in-Editor server is the one Unity has deprecated in favor of the CLI.[35]
Unity's release notes list the first public beta of the Unity CLI, version 0.1.0-beta.1, on April 4, 2026, as a single executable for macOS, Linux and Windows on x64 and Arm64. Version 0.1.0-beta.8 (June 25, 2026) added unity mcp, an MCP server built into the CLI that exposes the commands of a connected Editor as MCP tools, and unity mcp configure, which registered that server with 16 supported agent clients, including Claude, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. The 1.0 beta series began on June 30, 2026, and the latest release as of November 1, 2026, is 1.0.0-beta.14 of October 21, 2026.[36] Mado no Mori reported in August 2026 that the CLI installs and manages Editors, modules, projects and authentication, can format its output as JSON or TSV for automation, and can drive a running Editor through the experimental com.unity.pipeline package.[37] Unity's migration guide states that the CLI is free and separate from Unity AI, that its MCP mode is not part of the deprecation, and that its unity command and unity eval commands drive the Editor directly without MCP; driving a running Editor requires Unity 6.0 LTS or later.[30]
Official plugin
Unity's official plugin for coding agents is published in the Unity-Technologies/unity-agent-plugin repository on GitHub, whose README describes it as "Unity's official plugin for coding agents, with curated skills for game development, monetization, and performance optimization".[38] Mado no Mori reported that Unity released the plugin for Claude Code on September 9, 2026, bundling 29 Unity engineering skills in nine areas with the Unity CLI and an MCP server for live Editor control, and that a plugin for OpenAI's Codex with 31 skills followed on September 16.[39] Unity's AI tools page lists the plugin for Claude Code, Codex and Grok and states that it supports Unity 6.0 and later. According to the page, its skills cover getting started and tooling, user interfaces (UI Toolkit, uGUI, IMGUI and TextMeshPro), 2D and sprites, graphics and rendering (URP and Shader Graph), audio including Vivox, scene and gameplay (AI Navigation and 3D physics), monetization and live operations, multiplayer, and platform and localization.[5] The CLI added one-step installers for the plugin: unity setup claude in version 1.0.0-beta.12 (September 30, 2026), unity setup codex and unity setup grok for Codex and Grok Build in 1.0.0-beta.13 (October 7, 2026), and unity setup antigravity for Google Antigravity in 1.0.0-beta.14 (October 21, 2026).[36]

| November 2026 | Unity's AI tools, beta | The in-editor assistant uses credits and is included in Pro, Enterprise and Industry subscriptions; the Personal free trial converts to a US$10 per month subscription; the CLI, the MCP server and the official plugin are free to use with no concurrency limits; using the AI gateway does not consume Unity credits[5] |
Unity's AI guiding principles state that every paid plan includes a monthly credit allocation, that credits are granted to the Unity organization and can be used by all of its users, and that additional credit bundles can be bought.[19] The credit terms define Unity Credits as units of measurement for usage of the AI-based offerings, each reflecting the computing resources consumed to generate an output from prompts. Unused credits expire at the end of the subscription period and do not roll over, purchases are not refundable except as required by law, and credits cannot be transferred; Unity states that credit pricing is not expected to change during the beta but may do so.[27] The assistant's interface changed its wording from "points" to "credits" in version 2.7.0-pre.1 (April 28, 2026).[6]
Data, training and rights statements
During the first Unity 6.2 beta, Unity said that data from the use of Unity AI, including prompts, responses and interactions, would only be used to provide the service and not for model training, and that a later Unity 6.2 beta release would let users manage their data settings, including whether to share their data for model training.[1] Unity's AI guiding principles, last updated on August 19, 2026, state that users own their input and output data and that training Unity's AI models directly on their content is off by default. An organization-wide "Improve Unity AI" setting, also off by default, lets Unity use prompts, responses, interactions, code and other content to improve the models that generate answers, code and agentic actions; Unity states that it does not use this data to train its generative asset models for sprites, 3D meshes, textures or sounds.[19]
For the partner models behind the generators, the guiding principles state that Unity sends anonymized data, such as prompts and reference assets, to the providers solely to run the services; that the providers delete it after generation, apart from some temporary retention for operational purposes such as debugging; and that they do not train their models on it, even when "Improve Unity AI" is enabled. Some partner models block prompts that are likely to produce assets that infringe copyright or are otherwise illegal, which can lead to a null response, a blank image or a request to change the prompt.[19] Unity places responsibility for generated content on its users: the guiding principles say users must ensure that their use of the tools and the generated assets do not infringe third-party rights, and the AI tools page says developers are fully responsible for app store declarations and for verifying usage rights.[19][5]
Reception
After the June 2023 announcement, PC Gamer reported that many professional artists and developers criticized Muse and Sentis as impractical, unethical or legally dubious, and that the first question from many developers was which datasets the tools had been trained on. It wrote that Unity's response, which mentioned licensed third-party large language models, was not good enough in the eyes of many developers.[41] After Unity described the training data for Muse in November 2023, PC Gamer's Harvey Randall wrote that, unless there were hidden technicalities, there seemed to be nothing wrong with the tools from an ethical standpoint, while noting that the tools arrived in an industry going through repeated layoffs, including at Unity.[13] CG Channel called Unity AI the headline change in Unity 6.2 and "probably the most divisive".[18]
Use in XR development
Unity's product page presents the tools as AI tools for game development.[5] In a four-part tutorial series on its developer site, Meta described how to build a fruit-slicing VR game for Meta Quest with an AI coding tool, using Claude Code for every example. The setup page, in its version last updated on June 10, 2026, listed as prerequisites Unity 6.3 with Android Build Support, a Quest headset in developer mode, Node.js 18 or later and access to Claude Code or another AI tool.[8] Under the heading "Unity AI Assistant (official beta)", the setup installed Unity's MCP package and enabled the Claude Code integration under Edit > Project Settings > AI > Unity MCP; it then added the Meta XR MCP Extension, which Meta said "adds Quest-specific tools on top of Unity MCP, including OVR components, Meta XR SDK integration, and Quest build settings". The tutorial warned that "AI tools sometimes get things wrong" and said the series could be completed without Unity MCP by pasting the generated code into Unity manually.[8] The tutorial's setup used the MCP server of Unity's assistant package, which the package documentation marks as deprecated from version 2.18 in favor of the Unity CLI.[29]
Meta's Meta XR Unity MCP Extension, published in the meta-quest/Unity-MCP-Extensions repository on GitHub, extends Unity's MCP package (com.unity.ai.mcp), which its README describes as part of the "Unity AI Suite" in beta early access, with tools specific to Meta XR development. It requires Meta's Core SDK and Interaction SDK version 78 or later and Unity's assistant package, which the README calls Unity Assistant, with access to the AI gateway.[9] Its tools add a camera rig and an interaction rig, poke and ray interactions for user interface canvases, grabbable and distance-grabbable objects and teleport hotspots; they also update the Android manifest, report where configuration files are and how to use them, and list interactors with their current state. A Skill Importer window imports Meta XR skills from Meta's agentic-tools repository into Unity's assistant or into other agents, such as Claude, Codex, Copilot, Cursor, Gemini and OpenCode. The package is licensed under the Meta Platform Technologies SDK license.[9]
In its recap of Unite Seoul, where Meta's director of product management Jamie Keane joined the keynote, Meta described its Meta VR CLI as a combined command-line interface and MCP server "purpose-built for Quest device development" that developers can compose "with the Unity CLI and Unity MCP server for a full agentic loop". It also said its agentic tools repository contains 32 agent skills that build on Meta VR CLI and MCP and on Unity MCP.[42]
