Total Chaos VR Edition (also called Total Chaos VR) is an upcoming virtual reality version of Total Chaos, a first-person survival horror game developed by Trigger Happy Interactive and published by Apogee Entertainment. It was announced on 13 August 2026 as the opening title of that day's VR Games Showcase, for SteamVR and for Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S through the Meta Horizon Store.[1][2]
The publisher describes the VR Edition as adapted around virtual reality play rather than ported directly, with changed item placement and resource distribution, redesigned encounters and rebalanced sections.[3][4] Owners of the flatscreen game on Steam receive the PC VR version at no extra cost, while the Quest release is a separate standalone version.[5] As of 29 September 2026 no release date has been announced for either version.[3][6]
Background
Total Chaos began as a total conversion mod for Doom II made by the New Zealand modder known as Wad'a'Holic.[7] The mod was released in 2018 and ran on the GZDoom source port.[8] Trigger Happy Interactive later remade it as a standalone commercial game, published by Apogee Entertainment, which was released on 20 November 2025.[9] The flatscreen game is available for Windows PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch 2.[10]
The flatscreen release holds a Metascore of 80 on Metacritic, based on nine critic reviews of the PC version.[11] Game Informer gave it 8 out of 10.[12] When UploadVR reported the VR Edition announcement, the Steam version had a "Very Positive" user rating from more than 1,500 reviews.[5]
Gameplay
The player is a Coast Guard officer who answers a distress signal from an island. After a storm destroys their boat, they explore the island and follow cryptic radio messages to learn about its past.[5] The setting is Fort Oasis, an abandoned mining outpost; the campaign spans nine chapters.[8] Players scavenge supplies, craft weapons, solve puzzles and fight creatures with limited resources.[2][9][8] The Steam store page notes that the game deals with mental health struggles and self-harm and contains violent combat.[9]
For the VR Edition, Apogee says the developers adjusted item locations and resource distribution and reworked and rebalanced certain sections to suit VR interaction and pacing, so that returning players meet a different version of the island.[4][10] In an interview published by FRVR in May 2026, creator Sam Prebble said he wanted to tailor the game to VR "so it feels like a new game". The same article described a physical backpack inventory, reached over the shoulder, in place of the flatscreen grid inventory, along with fewer but more useful item pickups and changed enemy and crate placement.[13]
Development
VR support was planned before the flatscreen launch. In August 2025, UploadVR reported that PC VR support would arrive as a free post-launch update and quoted the developers as saying "the VR edition will be included with the base game".[8] The launch announcement on Steam in November 2025 said SteamVR support would arrive in Q2 2026.[14] That window passed without a release, and the August 2026 announcement gave no date beyond "coming soon".[3][1]

UploadVR reported that the Quest version will be released on the Horizon Store at a later date than the SteamVR version.[5] The Meta Horizon Store listing, titled simply Total Chaos, gives its genres as shooter, action, adventure and survival, and carries a 16+ age rating for strong violence and horror.[6]
