Overview

The experience puts the player in the role of astronaut Mark Watney, who performs tasks needed for his survival on Mars. According to its Steam listing, activities include flying down to the surface of Mars, steering through zero gravity in space, driving a rover and playing through scenes from the film.[1] It is a single-player title with tracked controller support and is marked VR only.[1]

Ridley Scott was executive producer and Robert Stromberg directed.[2] The Third Floor worked as a supplier to Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Innovation Labs and The Virtual Reality Company, creating CG environments and assets with Stromberg and building the interactive technology in Unreal Engine version 4.13.[4] The project debuted at CES 2016 and was accepted into the Sundance New Frontier program. It received the Cannes Silver Lion in Digital Craft and the Association of Independent Commercial Producers (AICP) Next VR Award.[4]
