TCL NXTWEAR V is a virtual reality head-mounted display concept. TCL announced it as a "virtual reality concept" in CES 2023 press materials dated 4 January 2023 from Las Vegas, alongside the TCL NXTWEAR S wearable display glasses and the TCL RayNeo X2 augmented reality glasses.[1][3]
TCL gave the headset's weight as 236 g and said its display, developed by TCL CSOT, provides a 108-degree field of view and a pixel density of 1512 ppi.[1] The company did not announce a price or a release date.[4][5]
Announcement
TCL introduced the NXTWEAR V in its CES 2023 press materials, stating that it "takes a bold step in bringing virtual reality experiences to market with the NXTWEAR V virtual reality concept." The release described the headset as light and comfortable to wear and said the display improves "both picture quality and relief from dizziness". TCL named exploring the metaverse, playing games and learning new skills as intended uses.[1] The same text appeared in TCL Mobile's European CES 2023 press page.[6] TCL's group-wide CES release called the product light and balanced "for a relaxed and secure feel during extended wear".[3]
TCL announced the NXTWEAR V together with the NXTWEAR S, a pair of wearable display glasses with dual 1080p Micro OLED displays that TCL brought to the United States market at the same show.[3] The headline of Inverse's CES report described the NXTWEAR V as TCL's "first-ever" headset prototype.[7]
Design and hardware
TCL's Chinese CES announcement identifies a 2.1-inch Fast LCD screen developed and manufactured by TCL CSOT, with a resolution of 2280 by 2280 pixels. It does not specify whether that resolution is per eye. The announcement also gives a 108-degree field of view without naming its axis.[2]
Inverse described the NXTWEAR V as a standalone VR headset that looks like "a boxier Quest 2 or the HTC Vive Focus 3", with custom TCL displays. It listed a 108-degree field of view, 4K displays with 1,512 pixels per inch and passthrough cameras.[7] Gaming Nexus reported that cameras on the front and corners of the headset suggest inside-out tracking, that the front cameras allow a pass-through view for augmented reality use, and that the headset has a single overhead strap with a cushion at the back of the head. It also noted a diopter adjustment, and said TCL had given no information on the display panels beyond the 1512 ppi pixel density.[4] Yanko Design wrote that the two front cameras enable a "transparent mode" and that the headset tracks movement in six degrees of freedom.[8]
MIXED reported that the concept, with a display made by TCL's panel manufacturer CSOT, uses a Qualcomm XR2 chip and has an integrated diopter adjustment and two front cameras for video viewing. The outlet gave a resolution of 2280 by 2280 pixels on the assumption that the concept is identical to a headset presented on the Rjoytek.com website. It also noted that an all-in-one headset named TCL V1, with pancake lenses, a 90 Hz refresh rate and a 4.5 ms response time, had been presented at the World VR Industry and Metaverse Expo in November 2022.[9] Androidphoria also listed a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 processor, two controllers and a 6DoF positioning system.[5]
According to Inverse, TCL said the headset would ship with two "touch controllers" if it is released.[7]

Status
TCL presented the NXTWEAR V only as a concept. Inverse wrote that TCL would not be releasing it "at least for now", and that it might become an enterprise product for training or VR work environments rather than a consumer gaming device. The outlet also described the CES showing as a way for TCL to demonstrate what it could build and to gauge interest.[7] Gaming Nexus and Androidphoria both reported that no price or release date had been given.[4][5]
