Steam Controller is the name of two gamepads developed by Valve Corporation for its Steam platform. The original model went on sale on 10 November 2015 and paired two haptic trackpads with a single thumbstick; Valve discontinued it in 2019.[3][4] The second model, announced on 12 November 2025 alongside the Steam Machine and the Steam Frame headset, keeps the trackpads but adds two magnetic (TMR) thumbsticks, a gyroscope with capacitive Grip Sense and a 2.4 GHz wireless transmitter and charging dock called the Steam Controller Puck.[5][1]
The 2026 model went on sale through Steam on 4 May 2026 at US$99 and sold out in about 30 minutes, after which Valve moved sales to a reservation queue.[2][6][7] Its inputs mirror those of the Steam Deck, so existing Steam Input configurations carry over.[1]
The controller matters to virtual reality because of Steam Frame. Infrared LEDs in the 2026 model let the headset's cameras track it, so a wearer can see a model of the controller while playing non-VR games on a virtual screen. Valve states that battery life is reduced during tracked play.[1][8]
Original Steam Controller (2015)
Announcement and development
Valve unveiled the first Steam Controller on 27 September 2013, its second hardware announcement of that week after the Steam Machines. The design shown then had two clickable rounded trackpads in place of thumbsticks, a small clickable touch screen between them and vibration feedback. Valve said the controller would work with any computer running Steam and that mouse-and-keyboard genres such as 4X and real-time strategy games should be playable with it.[9]
At Steam Dev Days in January 2014 Valve showed a redesign without the touch screen and with more physical buttons, a change it attributed to beta tester feedback. The first official image of the revised layout, with four face buttons near the right trackpad and directional buttons on the left, was released in March 2014.[10]
Pre-orders opened in June 2015 at US$50, CA$59.99 or GBP 40. Valve said a limited quantity of pre-orders would ship on 16 October 2015 ahead of the official launch on 10 November 2015.[11]
Design
The 2015 controller has two trackpads, a single analog stick, A, B, X and Y face buttons, Back and Start buttons on either side of a Steam button reserved by the system, shoulder buttons, dual-stage triggers and rear grip buttons. Valve's specification lists 10 degrees of trigger travel with a magnetic flux sensor and a tactile switch at the end of the pull, a gyroscope and accelerometer for motion input, wired USB 2.0 over Micro USB, and an estimated 5 m of wireless range. The controller runs on two AA batteries, with Valve quoting up to 80 hours of play from the included cells in preliminary testing. The box contains the controller, two AA batteries, a USB wireless pairing dongle and a dongle extension dock. Editing and sharing controller mappings requires Steam Big Picture Mode, and Mac users needed OS X 10.8 or newer.[3][12]
The trackpads accept 1:1 absolute position input and can emulate a trackball, an adaptive centering joystick or a steering wheel. Haptic actuators on both sides of the controller deliver vibrations timed in microseconds, which Valve used to simulate the spin of a trackball or the click of a scroll wheel.[3] The gyroscope reports pitch, yaw and roll and was widely used as an aiming device in first-person shooters.[12]
An iFixit teardown in December 2015 gave the controller 8 out of 10 for repairability. iFixit found little glue inside (some on the backs of the trackpads), but the analog stick was soldered to the mainboard, which made the part most likely to wear the hardest to replace.[13]
Reception
In his PC Gamer review, Wes Fenlon called the controller "probably the best possible attempt to replicate the accuracy of a mouse in a controller" but concluded that most games without controller support needed a custom or community configuration and that he "mostly ended up just missing my mouse". He also found the face buttons too small and the rear grips easy to squeeze by accident.[14] Speaking in 2026, Valve designer Lawrence Yang described the original as "novel" for mouse-and-keyboard games but "pretty difficult" for games designed for a gamepad, and "especially intimidating to pick up and play" for less experienced players.[15]
Sales and discontinuation
At Steam Dev Days in October 2016, Valve's Jeff Bellinghausen said the company had announced 500,000 controllers sold in June 2016, was "on track to sell a million by early next year", and saw about 27,000 daily active players with sessions averaging about an hour.[16]
In November 2019 Valve confirmed the controller was being discontinued and sold the remaining stock at US$5, a 90 percent discount, during its Black Friday sale. The Next Web cited Valve's own hardware study, in which about 1.5 million Steam Controllers had been registered on Steam out of nearly 60 million controllers, compared with 27.2 million Xbox 360 gamepads.[4]
Patent litigation
Ironburg Inventions, a company affiliated with SCUF, sued Valve in 2015, alleging that the Steam Controller's rear buttons infringed U.S. Patent No. 8,641,525, which covers a controller with additional controls on the back of the case. In February 2021 a jury in the Western District of Washington found willful infringement of seven claims and awarded US$4,029,533.93 in damages.[17] Tom's Hardware reported that Ironburg had warned Valve in 2014, that Corsair had acquired SCUF in 2019, and that Valve sold about 1.6 million units before ending production.[18]
The case continued on appeal. On 18 June 2026 the Federal Circuit reversed the district court's ruling that Valve was estopped from raising two invalidity grounds it had not included in a 2016 inter partes review petition, and remanded the case for further proceedings.[17]
Steam Controller (2026)
Announcement
Valve announced the new Steam Controller on 12 November 2025 together with a new Steam Machine and the Steam Frame headset, and said prices and release dates for all three would follow in "early 2026".[8] Valve engineer Steve Cardinali told PC Gamer that the team "targeted input parity with Steam Deck" because owners who dock the handheld lose its trackpads, gyro and grip buttons when they pick up an ordinary controller.[5] Road to VR reported that the controller's infrared LEDs allow Steam Frame to track it, so that someone using the headset as a large virtual display can see the controller model and reference its buttons.[8]
Valve's Lawrence Yang and Jeremy Slocum later described the design process. Yang said the team focused on "time to game", reducing setup to opening the box, plugging the Puck into the computer with a USB cable and letting Steam recognize the controller and install its firmware. Slocum, whose role Valve describes as human experience engineer, said testers compared 3D-printed prototypes that differed by millimeters and could "immediately tell the difference". The rear buttons sit under the curve of the grips, near where the middle and ring fingers rest, a placement Slocum said the team "nailed down pretty quick" with positive tester feedback.[15]
Design and hardware
The controller has two full-size thumbsticks using tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) sensors with capacitive touch, two 34.5 mm square pressure-sensitive trackpads with haptic feedback, a 6-axis IMU, and two capacitive Grip Sense areas along the back of the handles. Its four haptic motors are split between two linear resonant actuators in the trackpads and two higher-output actuators in the grips for rumble.[1] Cardinali said the TMR sticks allowed Valve to "lower the default dead zone by more than half" and would "keep drift at bay much, much, much longer".[5]

Reviewers noted details Valve's spec sheet does not list. PC Gamer measured a 250 Hz polling rate, identified Hall effect sensors in the triggers and membrane face buttons, and found the lower pair of grip buttons (L5 and R5) easy to press by accident.[19] GamersNexus identified the thumbstick modules as a Valve-customized version of the K-Silver JS13 family.[20] Tom's Hardware compared the 292 g weight to an Xbox Series controller with two AA batteries installed.[21] The Verge reported that Valve had tested touch-sensitive bumpers but dropped them for cost, weight or reliability reasons.[2]
Steam Controller Puck and connectivity
The Puck included in every box is both a 2.4 GHz wireless transmitter and a charging station: it attaches magnetically to the back of the controller to charge it, and it connects to the PC over USB-C.[1][5] Game Developer reported that the Puck removes three sources of friction at once: pairing through a computer's Bluetooth settings, interference that a receiver plugged directly into a crowded USB port can suffer, and the separate cable a player would otherwise need to charge the controller.[15] Bluetooth and USB-C tethered play remain available.[1] The Steam Machine has a dedicated antenna for up to four controllers and does not need the Puck.[5]
GamersNexus measured click-to-photon latency of 19 ms wired, 21.6 ms through the Puck, 21.9 ms with two controllers on one Puck and 37.3 ms over Bluetooth, rising to 73.8 ms with seven other Bluetooth controllers active; an Xbox One controller over USB measured 22.6 ms in the same test. Its line-of-sight Puck range test reached about 146 ft (44.5 m).[20]
Battery
Valve rates the 8.39 Wh battery at 35 or more hours of gameplay and states that tracked play with Steam Frame reduces it.[1] In a continuous-input test without haptics, GamersNexus recorded nearly 73 hours and a charge time of 3 hours 26 minutes from a Steam Deck charger at a 2.65 W peak.[20] PC Gamer found the Quick Access Menu indicator still full after eight hours of use, and Tom's Hardware did not reach 35 hours between charges during its review.[19][21]
Software and Steam Input
The controller requires Steam or the Steam Link app; it is not a generic controller for consoles.[1][22] Because its inputs match the Steam Deck, Valve pre-populated community configurations for thousands of games at launch.[1] Valve programmer Pierre-Loup Griffais said the company preferred handling the controller through Steam rather than a kernel driver that could cause system instability.[21] Valve notes that on macOS some titles that rely on Apple's Game Controller framework do not work with the controller.[1]
Valve's guides describe the main input modes. Each trackpad can act as a mouse, as a joystick for games that mishandle mixed input, as a Flick Stick for rapid fixed-angle turns, as a button cluster or directional pad, or as a virtual radial menu with up to 20 options.[23] The gyroscope offers Gyro to Mouse, Gyro to Joystick (Camera) and Gyro to Joystick (Deflection) modes; by default gyro is active while the right trackpad or right thumbstick is touched, the same rule as on Steam Deck.[24] Grip Sense, the two capacitive sensors in the handles, was built so a player can lift their fingers to disable gyro, recenter, and grip again, a practice Valve calls ratcheting; its activation threshold is adjustable and it can also be mapped like a button, for example to open a weapon wheel.[25]
Cardinali told PC Gamer that Grip Sense came from a Valve employee active in the gyro-aiming community who moved his desk to the hardware team for several months to help design the feature.[5] The controller also has an Easter egg: dropped from a sufficient height, it occasionally plays a quiet Wilhelm scream, with a cooldown of a minute or more between screams.[26]
Repairability and CAD files
The rear cover is held by seven Torx T6 screws.[27] Cardinali said Valve "wanted to make sure it was easily accessible for our customers" and that replacement parts would be sold through iFixit after launch, as they are for Steam Deck.[28] iFixit's device page carries OEM repair guides for the back cover, battery, bumpers, buttons, main board, rumble motors, thumbstick covers, trackpads and triggers.[29]
On 6 May 2026 Valve released CAD files for the external shells of the controller and the Puck under a CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license, with a note inviting anyone interested in a commercial product to contact the company.[30]
Release and availability
Valve confirmed the price and date on 27 April 2026, the day reviews were published: sales opened on 4 May 2026 at 10 a.m. Pacific time.[2][6] Valve told The Verge that it had built a "significant quantity" of controllers but could not be sure of meeting demand, and that the controller might cost slightly more than originally planned because of current conditions, not necessarily memory prices: "Shipping anything by sea, by air, the fuel is more expensive than it was last year." Memory shortages had delayed the Steam Machine and Steam Frame, which did not launch with it.[2]

The controller sold out about 30 minutes after going on sale while the Steam store returned transaction errors to many buyers.[6] On 5 May Valve posted that the controller "ran out faster than we anticipated" and promised a restock timeline; listings on eBay reached US$300.[31] A reservation queue opened on 8 May 2026 at 10 a.m. Pacific, limited to one controller per customer with a Steam purchase made before 27 April; when stock arrives, customers receive an order email in reservation order and have 72 hours to buy. The United States and Canada were served first, followed by the United Kingdom, European Union and Australia.[7]
On 18 June 2026 Valve wrote that "initial demand exceeded our expectations" and compared current demand with how many controllers it knew it could make by the end of the year. The Steam Controller page now shows each reservation one of three windows, "By September 2026", "By December 2026" or "In 2027", and new reservations made from that date are estimated for 2027.[32] When Steam Machine launched on 22 June 2026, Valve said it adopted a randomized reservation system because it "underestimated customer interest" in the controller; the 512 GB and 2 TB Steam Machines are sold with an optional controller bundle at US$1,128 and US$1,428.[33]

Use with Steam Frame
Steam Frame is Valve's wireless VR headset, sold with its own controllers and built for both VR and non-VR play. Reservations opened on 14 September 2026 at US$1,059 for the 256 GB model and US$1,299 for 1 TB.[34] The Steam Controller is not required for the headset. Its role is for non-VR games shown on the headset's virtual screen: the infrared LEDs let the headset's cameras locate the controller, so it appears as a visible object in VR.[1][2] Because the headset had not shipped when the controller was reviewed, The Verge and Tom's Hardware were unable to test tracked play.[2][21] Engadget noted that the controller, like the Steam Machine, is designed to work with the headset.[35]
Reception
Reviews published on 27 April 2026 were largely positive. PC Gamer scored the controller 83 out of 100, praising the TMR sticks and the combination of trackpads and gyro for mouse-like control from a couch, while calling the trackpads "around 70% of the way" to a mouse and noting cheaper options for players who do not need the extra inputs.[19] TechRadar gave it four stars out of five and called it "a massive improvement over the flawed original".[22] Tom's Hardware also awarded four stars, describing a comfortable, fully featured pad whose main condition is running everything through Steam.[21] Engadget scored it 90 out of 100 and wrote that the controller "represents roughly 13 years of R&D", from the 2013 announcement through Steam Deck.[35] GamersNexus concluded that someone who simply likes playing games with a controller has "no specific reason" to buy a Steam Controller.[20]
In May 2026 a Reddit user reported that the metal strap of a smartwatch sitting on its own charger touched the Puck's exposed charging pins and began to sizzle, leaving minor burn marks on both items. Valve's hardware team said it was investigating, arranged for the items to be shipped to it and promised a replacement Puck.[36]
