Rokid X-Craft is an augmented reality head-mounted display released in 2020. It was developed by the Chinese company Rokid for industrial use, and it clips onto a standard safety helmet or hard hat instead of being worn on its own.[1] The headband carries a binocular diffractive waveguide display with a 40-degree field of view, a 5G modem and cameras for remote assistance. It is certified for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (ATEX/IECEx Zone 1) and is rated IP66 against dust and water.[1][2]
Rokid launched the X-Craft in November 2020 together with China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), and aimed it at oil and gas, electric power, aviation, rail transport and other high-risk workplaces.[3] Rokid markets it as the first explosion-proof, waterproof, dustproof, 5G and GPS-capable mixed reality device.[4] The design won an iF Design Award in 2022.[5]
Announcement and release
Rokid and CNPC unveiled the X-Craft at the end of November 2020.[3] Chinese technology site Shenzhenware reported that the device was presented at PetroChina's "Dream Cloud 2020" exploration and development launch event in Beijing, where Rokid signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Kunlun Shuzhi, an information technology provider for CNPC. In China the helmet was presented under the name Mengjing (梦镜) and was paired with an AI system for oil and gas production work.[6] Rokid founder and CEO Zhu Mingming said the company was pleased to partner with PetroChina on AR products meant to improve safety and productivity for frontline workers. Sun Shisheng, head of CNPC's engineering technology Internet of Things laboratory, pointed to labor shortages, communication barriers and the share of accidents caused by human error in the oil and gas industry.[3]
Display Daily, writing in October 2021, described the headset as launched by Rokid "last December".[1] Rokid's entry for the 2022 iF Design Award gives 2021 as the date of launch and a development time of 13 to 24 months.[5]
In March 2022, TechCrunch cited the X-Craft as an example of Rokid's enterprise work in its report on the company's US$160 million Series C funding round, describing the headset as resistant to explosions, water and dust, with 5G and GPS.[7] Rokid showed the X-Craft alongside its Glass 2 and Air Pro glasses at booth 406 of the Field Service Palm Springs 2022 conference.[8]
Design and hardware
Helmet mount
The X-Craft is a headband rather than a pair of glasses. A flexible, retractable strap with a detachable buckle lets it fit helmets across a range of sizes, and Rokid says the weight is distributed evenly for long shifts.[1][3] The binocular display sits in front of the wearer's eyes and can be flipped up on a hinge to take it out of the line of sight.[3] A Rokid product catalog lists the headset's weight as 720 g and its working temperature range as -20 °C to 50 °C.[9]
The sides of the headband carry large physical knobs and buttons that can be used while wearing gloves, plus a one-button SOS alarm for emergencies.[3][1] The side rails accept accessories such as an industrial endoscope and an infrared sensor module.[1]
Display and optics
The display is a binocular diffractive optical waveguide with a 40-degree diagonal field of view, a 400:1 contrast ratio and a maximum brightness of 1,600 nits. Rokid gives the see-through light transmittance as greater than 80%, and a shading lens helps keep content visible in different lighting.[1][3] Rokid's catalog lists a resolution of 1280 x 720 (binocular) and a 60 Hz refresh rate.[9]
Computing and sensors
The headset is standalone and does not need a PC. It uses an Amlogic A311D chipset with 4 GB of memory and 128 GB of storage, and runs Yoda OS-XR, an Android-based operating system developed by Rokid.[1] Tracking is three degrees of freedom only, from a 9-axis inertial measurement unit; the headset also has light and proximity sensors.[1] Rokid's catalog lists GPS among the sensors, and Shenzhenware reported BeiDou satellite positioning.[9][6]
The main camera has 8 megapixels, autofocus and 1080p video, and there is a second HD camera.[1] Yanko Design described a movable camera above the display and a secondary flip camera near the forehead.[10]
Connectivity and battery
The X-Craft supports 5G, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 and has a USB Type-C port. Its 10,000 mAh battery is rated by Rokid for 8 hours of use.[1]
Safety certification
The X-Craft is IP66 rated and ATEX/IECEx certified for Zone 1, meaning areas in which an explosive gas atmosphere is likely to occur during normal operation.[1] In April 2022, Rokid announced that the device had received ATEX Zone 1 certification from TÜV Rheinland after two and a half years of work. According to Rokid, the battery went through three short-circuit tests (cell short-circuit current, temperature rise and electrolyte leakage); the surface and tab temperatures of the cell were not allowed to exceed 130 °C, and the fault energy could not cause the cell to explode or leak. The headset was also frozen for 24 hours at -20 °C, dropped from 1 m, and then checked against IP66.[4] The same English release also describes the battery test requirements as those of TÜV SÜD's explosion-proof certification.[4] Rokid's Chinese-language announcement of the same tests, republished in March 2022 by the AR/VR trade site ABVR360, names TÜV SÜD as the certifying body. The same announcement said the structural design alone took nearly two years and that the X-Craft was already in use at PetroChina and in coal production.[11]
Both announcements list the same two equipment markings:[4][11]
| Hazard | Marking |
|---|---|
| Explosive gas atmospheres | Ex II 2G Ex ib IIC T4 Gb |
| Explosive dust atmospheres | Ex II 2D Ex ib IIIC T130°C Db |
Software and features
The X-Craft is built for hands-free work. Workers can view documents, 3D models and operating manuals and inspect machines while keeping both hands free.[3] Rokid says that its noise-reduction microphones and AI algorithm can pick up voice commands in industrial environments at noise levels up to 85 decibels.[3][1] The remote collaboration software supports multi-person collaboration, screen and camera sharing, annotation, a whiteboard and video recording, so that frontline workers can reach remote experts or receive training.[3] Rokid also says an AI algorithm on the device lets workers update asset information automatically.[3]
In September 2021, Imint Image Intelligence announced that its Vidhance video stabilization software would be integrated into the X-Craft to improve recorded and live video, especially in low light. It was the first time Vidhance ran on the Amlogic A311D and Yoda OS-XR platform.[2][12] Imint later said the integration was completed in less than three weeks.[13] Third-party remote support software vendor VSight also lists the X-Craft on its page of supported industrial smart glasses.[14]
Deployment
The X-Craft is intended for industrial and enterprise tasks such as operations, inspections, remote training and collaboration, facility maintenance, and safety and quality checks.[1] Rokid's catalog lists heavy industry (gas, oil, mining and manufacturing) as its applications.[9] In April 2022, Rokid said the X-Craft had been deployed in more than 70 regions with companies in the energy and power industry.[4][8]
