Nolo X1 is a virtual reality head-mounted display released in 2020. It is a standalone headset made by the Beijing company NOLO (NOLO VR) and sold in China.[1] The X1 runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR1 chip and gets six degrees of freedom (6DoF) head and hand tracking from NOLO's own NOLO CV1 Pro kit, which uses a base station instead of headset cameras.[2][3]
The original X1 went on sale on 1 June 2020 in the 2,000 yuan price range.[4] In September 2020 NOLO announced a higher-resolution model, the NOLO X1 4K, with a 3840x2160 display.[5] Along with its own games, the headset can stream SteamVR games wirelessly from a PC using NOLO's NOLO HOME software.[6]
Background
NOLO first became known for low-cost positional tracking hardware for mobile VR. At CES 2017, NOLO VR showed a US$99 kit made up of a headset marker, a base station and two wireless motion controllers. It could add room-scale tracking to mobile headsets and, through Riftcat's VRidge software, play PC SteamVR titles. Road to VR reported that the kit came from a company called LYRobotix and used a tracking method called PolarTraq, which combines optical, acoustic and radio signals.[7] NOLO HOME, the company's program for streaming PC VR games to a headset, was released on Steam on 20 May 2018. The Steam listing names Beijing Lingyu Intelligent Control Technology Co., Ltd. (北京凌宇智控科技有限公司) as developer and publisher.[1]
The X1 packaged this tracking system with a standalone headset. It was sold as a complete 6DoF system for players who wanted to try PC VR games without buying a high-end headset.[4][6]
Announcement and release
NOLO launched the X1 on 1 June 2020 and marketed it to young players as a first VR game console.[4][3]
NOLO announced the NOLO X1 4K in September 2020.[8] The 6DoF edition opened for pre-order on 25 September 2020 at CN¥2,499 on JD.com and Tmall. A 3DoF edition followed with pre-orders on 15 October 2020 at CN¥1,799.[5][9] IT Home reported that the X1 4K went on sale on 1 October 2020 at CN¥2,699 for the complete 6DoF package. The NOLO CV1 Pro tracking kit was also sold separately for CN¥999.[6][10]
As of September 2026, NOLO's Chinese website still lists the NOLO X1 4K among its hardware products, next to the later Nolo Sonic and Nolo Sonic 2.[11]
Design and hardware
Headset
Both X1 models use the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR1 platform.[3][5] Sina Games rated the XR1 above the Snapdragon 835 in product positioning and performance, and slightly below the Snapdragon 845.[2] The original X1 has a resolution of 1280x1440 per eye and weighs under 400 grams, and it uses Fresnel lens optics.[3][4]
NOLO's specification page for the X1 4K lists a 3840x2160 resolution, a 96° field of view, an automatically adapting interpupillary distance range of 54 mm to 74 mm and room to wear glasses without manual adjustment. The same page lists 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage with microSD expansion up to 128 GB (FAT32, NTFS and exFAT), Android 8.1, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.2, and a weight under 400 grams without the head strap.[11] IT Home's review adds that the X1 4K has a Fast-LCD panel running at 75 Hz, two Fresnel lenses, a 4000 mAh battery, a weight of 0.44 kg including the straps, and dimensions of 181 x 139 x 104 mm.[6][10] The headset has a USB Type-C port for power and data, a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a microSD card slot. Its sensors are a gravity sensor, compass, gyroscope, light sensor and proximity sensor.[11]

Tracking
The headset handles 6DoF tracking with the NOLO CV1 Pro kit. The X1 4K package includes the headset, a base station, a head-mounted tracker and two handheld controllers with wrist straps.[10] The CV1 Pro uses NOLO's PolarTraq system, which the company describes as a mix of ultrasound, laser and radio signals. Because it does not depend on cameras, it is claimed to work in bright sunlight and in darkness, unlike camera-based SLAM tracking.[5][8] NOLO quoted a tracking precision below 1.5 mm, latency under 10 ms and a tracking radius of 5 meters.[5][9] According to CCID Net, PolarTraq grew out of NOLO's earlier work on drones.[3]
NOLO rated the headset at about 2.5 hours of 6DoF gaming per charge and the controllers at 7 hours.[5] In ZOL's review, the X1 4K lasted about 4 hours for video and 2 hours for games.[12] IT Home reported that the tracking base station runs for about 4 hours per charge.[6]
Software and features
The X1 has three content sources: native 6DoF and 3DoF games and videos from NOLO's own store, PC VR games streamed through NOLO HOME, and cloud VR games from China Telecom's Tianyi cloud VR service, which NOLO partnered with.[2][3][8] NOLO HOME streams SteamVR games over a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection and adjusts the bitrate to network conditions. IT Home noted that the SteamVR library then held more than 5,000 titles.[6] Sina Games named Beat Saber and Half-Life: Alyx among the SteamVR games playable this way.[2] NOLO's download page lists the Windows version of NOLO HOME as supporting the NOLO X1 with the NOLO CV1 Pro.[13]
Reception
In its October 2020 review, IT Home considered the X1 4K good value because it gave access to SteamVR games while comparable 6DoF standalone headsets cost more than 4,000 yuan. It noted that single-base-station tracking limits play in games that require turning around, such as Half-Life, but that NOLO provides a function that turns the player 180 degrees with a double press of the controller menu button. Wireless streaming has some latency compared with a wired connection, but the reviewer found it hard to notice in the games tested. Streaming requires a mid-range to high-end PC and a router that supports the 5 GHz band.[6] ZOL's review noted the headset's weight of under 400 grams and a tracking precision of ±1.5 mm with latency under 10 ms, which the reviewer said made controller movement feel like real life. It cautioned that wirelessly streaming large VR games is demanding on the PC, and named the CN¥2,699 starting price as the product's main attraction.[12]
