The iQIYI Qiyu Dream is a standalone virtual reality head-mounted display developed by iQIYI, one of China's largest online video platforms. Released in 2021, the Qiyu Dream is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 platform, targeting consumers with access to iQIYI's extensive content library including movies, TV shows, and VR experiences. The device is part of iQIYI's Qiyu (奇遇) VR ecosystem.
iQIYI's VR subsidiary, iQIYI Intelligence, unveiled the headset in Beijing on 1 December 2021 at a launch price of 1,999 yuan, and it went on sale in China on 8 December 2021 through JD.com and Tmall.[1][2] It pairs the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, and tracks the head and both controllers in six degrees of freedom with iQIYI's own camera-based tracking system.[1] Launch reports in Shenzhenware and GeekPark described it as the industry's first 6DoF standalone headset with an XR2 processor priced under 2,000 yuan.[3]
The Dream was a lower-cost companion to the flagship IQIYI Qiyu 3, with a 2560 x 1440 display in place of the Qiyu 3's higher-resolution panels.[4] A 256 GB Premium Edition followed in February 2022, and the IQIYI Qiyu Dream Pro, with a higher-resolution display and PC streaming, went on sale in May 2022.[5][6]
History and development
iQIYI entertainment platform
iQIYI is often referred to as the "Netflix of China," operating one of the country's largest streaming platforms.[2] The company expanded into VR hardware to provide immersive viewing experiences for their content.
Qiyu VR series
The Qiyu Dream is part of iQIYI's lineup of VR headsets designed for the Chinese market, emphasizing entertainment and content consumption. The earlier Qiyu 3 launched on 31 August 2021 and went on sale on 3 September 2021 through JD.com and Tmall.[7] Shenzhenware described the Dream, three months later, as a "youth version" of the 3,499 yuan Qiyu 3: it kept the same processor and memory but lowered the display resolution from the Qiyu 3's "4K" class to "2K".[4]
Announcement and launch
iQIYI Intelligence (爱奇艺智能) held the Qiyu Dream launch event in Beijing on 1 December 2021. Reservations opened the same day on JD.com and Tmall, and sales began at midnight on 8 December 2021.[1][3] At the event the company said it would rename itself "Dream Bloom" (梦想绽放) to emphasize its focus on the metaverse.[2][3] According to China Daily, chief executive Xiong Wen told the Beijing news conference that the metaverse will be the next-generation internet and that VR will become the gateway into it.[2] The company's English name in its later developer documentation is Dreamagic.[8]
Launch promotions included a 30-day return period on JD.com (7 days on Tmall), a 1,000 yuan rebate for buyers who completed a 13-week video posting task, and a free headset with the purchase of a five-year iQIYI Star Diamond membership.[1] VR Tuoluo noted that with the posting rebate the effective price fell to 999 yuan.[9]
Premium Edition
On 22 February 2022 the company, by then operating as Beijing Dream Bloom Technology Co., Ltd. (北京梦想绽放科技有限公司), opened pre-sales of the Qiyu Dream Premium Edition (奇遇Dream尊享版) at 2,699 yuan. It has the same Snapdragon XR2 platform with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, and came bundled with 20 games and a one-year Qiyu VR film and video membership.[5]
Later developments
The Dream was followed by the Qiyu Dream Pro, which went on sale on 16 May 2022 at a launch price of 2,499 yuan with a 3664 x 1920 display and wireless PC streaming.[6] In August 2023, TechNode, citing a Sina report, said that the VR company had failed to pay more than 100 employees after receiving only a few tens of millions of yuan of a 400 million yuan Series C round, because the funding depended on sales targets it had missed.[10] iQIYI chief executive Gong Yu said that iQIYI Smart and iQIYI were separate legal entities.[10]
Design and hardware
The Dream uses what reviewers called a hat-style design. The forehead rest is shaped like the band of a cap, the connection between the head strap and the visor flips up by 90 degrees, and the 5,500 mAh battery sits in the rear of the head strap to counterbalance the front of the headset.[4][11] A single knob at the back tightens the strap.[11] VR Tuoluo reported a specification weight of 618 g for the complete headset and estimated that the front unit felt closer to 400 g in use.[9] It wakes automatically when put on and goes to sleep when taken off.[4]

The headset has two Fast LCD panels with a combined resolution of 2560 x 1440 and a refresh rate of 72 or 90 Hz, viewed through dual aspheric lenses.[11] The QIYU developer documentation lists a 93° field of view and a 90 FPS display, and VR Tuoluo's review listed 72 Hz and 93°.[8][9] iGao7's specification list gives a standard lens spacing of 63 mm, suited to interpupillary distances from 57 to 69 mm.[11] Shenzhenware wrote that the adjustable IPD knob of the Qiyu 3 was replaced by an "adaptive" design intended to fit most users.[4]

Audio, connectivity and power
The developer documentation lists two speakers, two microphones, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, a USB Type-C port and a 3.5 mm headset jack.[8] The headset uses a Nordic Semiconductor nRF52832 Bluetooth LE chip, and each controller has an nRF52833.[12] Nordic Semiconductor gives the battery life as two to three hours per charge from the 5,500 mAh battery.[12]
Tracking

Tracking is inside-out and based on computer vision. iQIYI's own system, called 追光 (literally "chasing light"), uses four fisheye cameras that Shenzhenware noted had been moved to the corners of the visor.[1][8][4] Infrared emitters inside the ring of each controller are tracked by the headset's cameras.[4] Each controller has a thumbstick, trigger and grip button, supports vibration feedback and runs on one AA battery.[11][13]

The headset runs QIYU OS 5.0, based on Android 10.[11] Video plays in iQIYI's iQUT future cinema, which presents a virtual screen equivalent to 2,000 inches with HDR and Dolby Atmos.[3][4] At launch iQIYI said it offered 4K 3D films and 8K panoramic video for the headset at bit rates of up to 17 Mbps and frame rates of up to 60 FPS.[3] A TGBUS review republished by GeekPark cited official figures of more than 10,000 films, including more than 1,000 Hollywood films, along with TV series, variety shows and anime.[13] For common commands the Dream has custom voice hotwords that work without a wake word, such as play, pause and next episode.[4]
VR gaming
Access to VR games and applications optimized for the platform. At launch, iQIYI said it had partnerships with more than 100 domestic and foreign game developers and planned to add three to five titles a month; titles already on the platform included Arizona Sunshine and Crisis VRigade 2.[1][2] The store had 38 games at launch, with a target of 100 by the end of 2022.[13][9] Nordic Semiconductor describes gaming, fitness and virtual cinema modes, and a QiYu VR companion app for iOS and Android.[12]

Reception
Chinese reviewers focused on the price. iGao7 praised the hat-style fit, the ease of adjustment, room for glasses and game performance close to that of the 3,000-yuan-class Qiyu 3, but said the 2K display showed slight graininess on text and white backgrounds compared with 4K headsets.[11] VR Tuoluo found the comfort equal to higher-priced mainstream headsets; it wrote that image quality was clearly worse than the Quest 2 but still acceptable, and that controllers could occasionally drift during large forward and backward movements.[9] Shenzhenware called the headset light, easy to use and good value for entry-level users, while noting the lower resolution than the Qiyu 3.[4] A TGBUS review, republished by GeekPark, called the experience "unexpectedly excellent" for a 1,000-yuan-class headset.[13]
Market position
The Qiyu Dream targets the Chinese consumer market, where iQIYI competes with other VR manufacturers including Pico (acquired by ByteDance) and other domestic brands.[9]
