Half-Life 2 is a first-person shooter developed and published by Valve and released for Windows on 16 November 2004.[1] It has been played in virtual reality in two distinct ways. In May 2013 Valve added an experimental Oculus Rift mode to the PC game through a Steam beta, and in August 2014 it extended that mode to the Oculus Rift DK2 through SteamVR.[2][3] That official support targeted the Oculus Rift development kits and was never updated for consumer headsets.[4]
Since 16 September 2022 the game can be played with motion controllers on any headset supported by SteamVR through Half-Life 2: VR Mod, a free fan-made VR App on Steam developed by the Source VR Mod Team and published by Flat2VR Studios. The mod requires the player to own Half-Life 2 on Steam and was not made by Valve.[5] In August 2026 the mod was verified for Valve's Steam Frame headset after an update that added eye-tracked foveated rendering.[6]
Gameplay
The player controls Gordon Freeman, who wakes from stasis in City 17, a city under occupation, and joins Alyx Vance in a human resistance movement. Valve's store description highlights the game's world-building, physics and combat.[1] The game runs on Valve's Source engine.[7] It is a single-player game, and on Steam it supports full controller input.[1]
For its 20th anniversary in November 2024, Valve released an update that added a new commentary mode, graphics and gameplay options and Steam Workshop support; the game's Steam package now includes Episode One and Episode Two.[7][1][8] Valve also gave the base game and both episodes away for free on Steam until 18 November 2024.[8]
VR support
Official Oculus Rift beta (2013)
On 10 May 2013 Valve programmer Joe Ludwig announced on the Oculus Rift developer forums that a Half-Life 2 beta with Oculus Rift support was available.[2][9] Players enabled it by setting "-vr" as the game's launch option in Steam and opting into the SteamPipe beta branch; Ludwig said it "should ship to everybody in a few weeks."[2] He warned that the mode was "a bit more raw" than the VR mode in Team Fortress 2, with minor UI problems and a HUD that was hard to read.[2] Road to VR listed the two known issues at launch: the zoom UI appeared as a quad in the middle of the screen instead of at its edges, and the HUD was dim.[10] Valve released a Linux beta of Half-Life 2 through Steam Play at the same time.[2]
The 2013 mode rendered the game in stereo 3D with pre-warping for each eye. Road to VR's setup guide recommended running the IPD calibration tool (vr_calibration) in Team Fortress 2 and copying the resulting "vr_" settings into Half-Life 2's configuration file. The guide's author reported that Episode One did not display properly at the time, while Episode Two did.[11]
DK2 and SteamVR support (2014)
On 15 August 2014 Valve released an update that added Oculus Rift DK2 support to Half-Life 2 and to Steam's Big Picture mode, using Oculus SDK 0.4.1 with positional tracking. Players had to opt into the "SteamVR Beta Update" for SteamVR and the "Beta updates" branch for Half-Life 2, run the DK2 in extended mode, enter VR mode from Steam's View menu, enable VR in the game's video options and then choose "Activate Virtual Reality" from the main menu. Road to VR reported that SteamVR supported Windows, Mac and Linux, although positional tracking was not yet available on Linux, and that the positional tracking volume inside Half-Life 2 was "artificially limited" unless it was raised with the console command vr_translation_limit.[3]
Valve did not carry this support forward to the consumer Rift and HTC Vive. In 2017, Marulu, a new member of a team reviving the Half-Life 2 VR mod, told Road to VR that the Source engine supported only DirectX 9, which did not allow texture sharing and was not supported by the new VR APIs, because "Oculus and SteamVR both need DirectX 10+". He said Valve had left VR support in Source in the DK2 "extended" state based on an old SteamVR version.[12][4]
HL2VR mod (2013-2014)
Separately from Valve's mode, Nathan Andrews and a modder known as WormSlayer created the HL2VR mod. It added 1:1 motion-controlled weapons using the Razer Hydra. Version 1.4, released in September 2014, added DK2 positional tracking, made Episode One and Episode Two completable from start to finish, and introduced gestures for reloading weapons and throwing grenades.[13] WormSlayer told Kotaku that Andrews's first prototype used a Sony HMZ-T1 head-mounted display, a console gun controller and a professional 3D tracking system, before the project moved to the Oculus Rift DK1.[14]
Half-Life 2: VR revival (2017)
In May 2017 members of the original mod team and new contributors announced "Half-Life 2: VR", a free remastered mod for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift with VR controller support, and put it on Steam Greenlight. Players would need Half-Life 2 and both episodes, although only the base game would be playable at first.[4][12] Marulu said he had written rendering code that sends the DirectX frames "in low latency directly to the VR SDKs". WormSlayer, one of the authors of the original mod, said he had spent two years hand-tuning some 90 maps, updating the levels to use HDR lighting, optimizing shadow map resolution and fixing misaligned textures and gaps in level geometry.[12][4] Several weapons already used reload gestures; the .357 Magnum, for example, had to be tilted up to dump its spent cartridges and flicked to close the cylinder. The team planned ambidextrous support or dual wielding, seated and standing play with thumbstick snap turns, and an "arcade" reload setting.[4][12]
Half-Life 2: VR Mod (2022 onward)
The project stalled again. According to Kotaku, Andrews had retired from the project, the revival lost momentum when essential contributors moved on, and a new team later formed from the Flatscreen to VR Discord community, led by WormSlayer.[14] Engadget wrote that an influx of new team members "revitalized" development, and that the mod re-emerged in 2021.[15] MIXED described WormSlayer as team leader in 2022 and later identified Holger Frydrych, known online as Cabalistic, as the lead developer. Frydrych described the mod's history in a talk at Big Techday 2023 in Munich, saying that development regained momentum in 2021 after several long breaks.[16][17]
In April 2022 the team showed a working gravity gun, drivable vehicle sections, and the SMG, pulse rifle and RPG; the revolver, shotgun, crossbow, grenades and bugbait still needed work.[18] In August 2022 UploadVR reported that the team was still waiting for Valve to approve its Steam store page, then updated its report on 29 August to say the free public beta was confirmed for Steam on 16 September 2022.[19] The team described the release as a public beta made by volunteers that was playable from start to finish but still missing features, and said the mod would always be free of charge.[20][21] The mod is listed on Steam as a mod of Half-Life 2 rather than a standalone game; players must own the original but do not need the non-VR version installed.[5]
To work with current VR runtimes, the mod uses DXVK to translate the game's Direct3D 9 rendering, which VR runtimes do not support, to Vulkan.[22] VR conversions of Episode One and Episode Two followed as separate free Steam releases on 17 March 2023 and 6 April 2023; each requires ownership of the corresponding episode.[23][24][25] MIXED noted in November 2024 that the improvements in Valve's anniversary update were not included in the VR mod and would first have to be implemented by its team.[8]
VR features
Half-Life 2: VR Mod supports room-scale play with tracked motion controllers. Players physically walk around, pick up and throw objects, and climb ladders by hand. Weapons are switched through a radial menu, ammunition is stored over the shoulder, and weapons have functional iron sights, two-handed grips and manual reloading. Control options include full left-handed support, a laser sight and an arcade-style "quick reload". Comfort options include teleport movement, a motion vignette and a third-person vehicle camera. The mod runs on any headset supported by SteamVR and has optional support for bHaptics vests and ProVolver haptic pistols.[5] Engadget noted that weapons are switched through the same selection grid used in Half-Life: Alyx.[15]
Vehicle sections were a known comfort problem. In April 2022 the developers warned that they required strong VR tolerance because of artificial turning, and planned a flat-screen option.[18] The April 2023 update added a "2D cinema mode" that shows vehicle rides on a virtual 2D screen and switches back to VR when the player leaves the vehicle.[26] The team called its teleport movement experimental when it arrived in February 2023 and warned that it does not remove all artificial movement, since enemies and physics events can still push the player.[27]

Setup instructions
For the 2013 Oculus Rift beta, players opened Half-Life 2's properties in Steam, selected the SteamPipe beta on the Betas tab and added "-vr" to the launch options.[11] The 2014 DK2 mode was started from SteamVR and Steam's VR mode, as described above.[3]
Half-Life 2: VR Mod is installed from Steam as a free download. The player must own Half-Life 2 on Steam (Steam Family Sharing is not enough), but the non-VR game does not have to be installed.[5]

Reception
The original Half-Life 2 has a Metacritic score of 96, as shown on its Steam page.[1] Valve's official site lists Game of the Year awards from IGN and the AIAS and Best Game awards from the GDC Awards, Edge and BAFTA.[7]
When the 2013 beta was released, Road to VR wrote that once it was working correctly the official mode was "incredibly compelling and impressive" compared with unofficial mods and hacks, but that getting it to run well took configuration work.[11] Road to VR later called the HL2VR mod a "complete and polished mod" and praised its two creators for releasing it for free.[13]
In a June 2022 preview of the closed beta, played on a Valve Index, MIXED's Maximilian Schreiner called the VR version better than the original, saying that crowbar fighting and shooting felt good thanks in part to the Alyx-inspired reloading mechanics and two-handed weapons, and that the Combine's oppression seemed more threatening in VR. He experienced motion sickness during the boat ride, for which the team offered vignette and third-person camera options.[16] Engadget reported an "Overwhelmingly Positive" Steam user rating from 732 reviews the day after the public beta launched.[15] Kotaku's Claire Jackson praised the physics interaction and crowbar combat and found performance good in the parts she had played, although she warned that the lack of a teleport option at the time could make the mod hard on the stomach for VR newcomers. WormSlayer told Kotaku that because the engine is very single-threaded and supports only DirectX 9, the team had struggled to hit frame-rate targets in some places.[14] As of 9 October 2026, Steam shows an "Overwhelmingly Positive" user rating for Half-Life 2: VR Mod.[5]
