Goertek (Goertek Inc., Chinese: 歌尔股份有限公司) is a Chinese electronics manufacturer headquartered in Weifang, Shandong. It makes precision components (acoustic parts, optics, MEMS sensors and structural parts) and complete devices for other brands, including VR and MR headsets, AR devices and AI smart glasses.[1][2] The company was founded in June 2001 and listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in May 2008, where it trades under stock code 002241.[1][2]
Goertek works mostly as an original design manufacturer (ODM) and joint design manufacturer (JDM), so its name rarely appears on the products it builds.[2] In the XR industry it builds headsets and glasses for Meta and has co-developed a series of Qualcomm Snapdragon reference designs that other companies use as starting points for their own hardware.[3][4] In its 2025 annual report, Goertek says it holds a leading market position in AI smart glasses and MR devices, among other product categories.[2]
History
Goertek has its roots in electro-acoustics. Its chairman, Jiang Bin, has more than 30 years of experience in the electro-acoustic industry according to the company, and Forbes describes him as the chairman of "a leading supplier of acoustic components in China".[2][5] Its company profile lists precision components in acoustics, optics, microelectronics and enclosures, and finished products including VR, AR, wearable and "hearable" devices, with research and development centers in China, the United States, Singapore, Japan and South Korea.[1]
Goertek's VR work goes back to the mid-2010s. The company says it has built Snapdragon-based VR and MR reference designs with Qualcomm Technologies since 2015 and joined Qualcomm's HMD Accelerator Program in 2017.[6][7] In a February 2017 announcement, Goertek described itself as "the worldwide #1 ODM for virtual reality HMD in 2016".[8]
In November 2018 Goertek signed an exclusive manufacturing partnership with the British waveguide maker WaveOptics, meant to allow mass manufacture of AR waveguides. In September 2019 Goertek supplied the additional 13 million US dollars that completed WaveOptics' Series C round.[9] In July 2020 Goertek announced a 4 billion yuan convertible bond offering, about a quarter of which was set aside for its VR and AR manufacturing. Road to VR reported that the plan aimed to add 3.5 million VR/AR units of annual production capacity, plus 5 million units a year of precision optical lenses and modules.[10]
On 22 and 23 June 2022 Goertek's shares fell about 10 percent and then another 4.4 percent after analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that Meta's headset shipments would fall about 40 percent that year. Goertek responded that its "production, operations, and orders are normal".[11]
Work for Meta
UploadVR describes Goertek as Meta's Chinese manufacturer and says it has been Meta's design-for-manufacturing partner since the original Oculus Rift.[3] Yicai Global listed the Meta affiliate Oculus, along with Apple, among Goertek's clients in 2022.[11]
In December 2024 The Information reported that Meta planned to shift more design work on its headsets, including components such as lenses and displays, to Goertek, and that Goertek had started designing the outer shell of future headsets.[3][12] Meta chief technology officer Andrew Bosworth rejected the report, saying "We continue to design our headsets in house as we have and have no plans to change that". He called Goertek "a great partner" and said that reusing mature parts of the design from headset to headset was not a change in approach.[3][12][13]
In September 2025 the Financial Times reported that Goertek was manufacturing Meta's display glasses code-named Hypernova, and that it had taken control of the optics maker Shanghai OmniLight and helped finance a takeover of the optics supplier Plessey. Meta told the newspaper that it has "a robust, diversified supply chain" and is not solely dependent on any one manufacturer.[14] The Hypernova glasses were unveiled that month at Meta Connect 2025 as the Meta Ray-Ban Display.[15]
Qualcomm reference designs
A reference design is a working device that a chipmaker and a manufacturer build to show what a new chip can do. Other brands can license or adapt it to shorten their own development time. Goertek has built many of these for Qualcomm's XR chips, usually handling the hardware design, system integration and manufacturing.[16][6]
| Reference design | Announced | Platform | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone VR HMD reference platform | February 2017 (MWC 2017) | Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 | Goertek's second-generation standalone VR reference platform, succeeding its VR820 platform; 1440x1440 per eye at up to 90 Hz, 100 degree field of view, integrated eye tracking and two front cameras for 6DoF tracking[8] |
| XR2 5G reference design | February 2020 | Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 | Described by Goertek as the first 5G-enabled XR reference design; Goertek handled system integration and manufacturing as an HMD Accelerator Program manufacturing partner; up to seven cameras and support for 2Kx2K per eye LCD panels[16][17] |
| AR smart viewer (first generation) | 2021 | Qualcomm Snapdragon XR1 | First Goertek and Qualcomm AR smart viewer design[7] |
| Qualcomm Wireless AR Smart Viewer | May 2022 | Snapdragon XR2 | Hardware developed by Goertek; dual 0.49-inch Micro-OLED displays at 1920x1080 and 90 Hz; front frame about 40 percent thinner than the first generation; Wi-Fi 6/6E and Bluetooth link to a phone or PC[7][18] |
| AR smart viewer | February 2023 (MWC 2023) | Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 | Weight just under 100 g; 38 degree field of view; up to 1,500 nits; Wi-Fi 7 with under 2 ms latency to the phone; 6DoF with SLAM; Snapdragon Spaces ready[19] |
| MR reference designs | January 2024 | Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 and Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 | XR2+ Gen 2 design with dual 4.3K-per-eye micro-OLED displays at 90 fps, 3P (three-piece) pancake lenses custom designed by Goeroptics, 95 degree field of view, 44 pixels per degree, color video pass-through up to 6 MP, and Ultraleap hand tracking[6] |
At CES 2026 Goertek showed an MR headset reference design that it says weighs about 100 grams, roughly one fifth of a conventional device. It uses 1.35-inch 4K Micro-OLED displays and Goertek's own 3P pancake optics, with 38 pixels per degree across a 100 degree field of view, video see-through and 6DoF tracking.[20] Road to VR noted that a headset this light probably has no onboard compute or battery, and the demo unit was shown connected to a PC.[4] The same show included Goertek's "Rubis" AR glasses reference design with a full-color etched waveguide and an EMG wristband for gesture input, and "Spinel", a 35-gram AI glasses design with a 4K photo camera.[20]
Optics and display investments
Goertek's precision components business sells MR optical devices and modules, AR optical devices and modules, micro-nano optical parts and MEMS sensors, and its 2025 research projects included pancake optics for MR headsets and optical modules that combine optical waveguides, microdisplays and electrochromic layers with ordinary eyeglass lenses.[2]
In 2025 Goertek restructured its optics subsidiary, Goertek Optical Technology. Under a deal approved by Goertek's board on 12 September 2025, Goertek Optical acquired Sunny OmniLight NanoOptics from the Sunny Optical group in exchange for new equity. Goertek's stake fell from 56.6560 percent to 38.5713 percent, and Goertek Optical became an associate company rather than a consolidated subsidiary, a change that added RMB 2.127 billion of investment income to Goertek's 2025 results. Goertek remained the largest shareholder of Goertek Optical.[2] In June 2026 Goertek and Sunny's Ningbo OmniLight each agreed to inject a further RMB 500 million into Goertek Optical. On completion, subject to approvals, Goertek's stake would rise to about 39.67 percent and Ningbo OmniLight's to about 33.27 percent.[21] A 12-inch AR optical wafer plant run by Goertek OmniLight Optical Technology, the former Sunny OmniLight NanoOptics, started commercial production in Shanghai's Lingang area in June 2026. It makes AR waveguide lenses, electrochromic lenses and microlens arrays.[22] At the CIOE trade show in September 2026, Goertek's optics brand Goeroptics showed several full-color diffractive waveguides, including a silicon carbide module with a 50 degree field of view, along with new pancake modules.[23]
In August 2025 Goertek's subsidiary GoerTek (Hong Kong) agreed to lend up to 100 million US dollars for five years to the UK company Haylo Labs, which used the money to buy MicroLED maker Plessey Semiconductors. Plessey has worked with Meta on microLED displays for AR glasses, and the UK government cleared the deal after a national security review.[24][25]

In the report Goertek said AI smart glasses revenue grew strongly in 2025, while some audio and smart hardware projects shrank because of product life cycles. It also said a labor shortage at its Vietnam production base during the fourth-quarter peak season raised costs and cut that quarter's profit.[2]
