Effect House is a free desktop application from TikTok for creating augmented reality (AR) effects that people apply to their camera in the TikTok app. It runs on macOS and Windows, and creators sign in with a TikTok account to build, test and submit effects, which TikTok reviews before publishing them to its users.[1][2] The tool covers face effects, hand and body tracking, segmentation, world tracking on detected surfaces, visual scripting and TypeScript scripting, and, in later versions, generative AI asset tools and an agent-based "Ask AI" feature.[3][4]
TikTok put up a sign-up site for Effect House in August 2021 and ran a closed beta from fall 2021, expanded the beta to all creators on April 12, 2022, and declared the product out of beta on August 30, 2023.[5][6][7] It fills the same role for TikTok that Lens Studio fills for Snapchat and that Spark AR filled for Meta Platforms apps until Meta withdrew Spark's third-party tools and effects on January 14, 2025.[8][9][10] As of October 2026 the current release is version 5.15.0, published on September 22, 2026.[4]
History
Closed beta (2021)
In August 2021 TechCrunch reported that TikTok was building an AR development platform. A sign-up website at effecthouse.tiktok.com had gone live in early August, and the press coverage called the tool "TikTok Effect Studio". Applicants supplied their name, email, TikTok account details, company, AR experience level, examples of previous work and whether they used a Mac or PC. The private beta ran in select markets, including the United States. TikTok described it at the time as an experiment and said: "Currently, we're experimenting with ways to give creators additional tools to bring their creative ideas to life for the TikTok community."[5] The same report compared the move with Facebook's Spark AR, which it said had more than 600,000 creators across 190 countries, and with Snap, which had launched a US$3.5 million fund for Lens creation in 2020.[5]
Public beta (2022)
On April 12, 2022, TikTok expanded the Effect House beta to all creators. TikTok said that more than 450 effect creators had published effects during the closed beta, which had run since fall 2021, and that those effects had been used in more than 1.5 billion videos with more than 600 billion views.[11][6] Version 1.0.0 shipped the same day. Its release notes listed AR Camera and AR Plane for plane-tracked effects; segmentation of portrait, hair, head, cloth, sky, ground and buildings; Hand Tracker, Head Tracker and Body Avatar Drive; face tools including Face Stretch, 3D Face, Face Sticker, Face Avatar Drive, Face Mask, Face Inset and Eye Color; skeletal animation; post-process effects; physically based and other built-in materials with lights and shadows; and a node-based visual scripting system with subgraphs.[3]
TikTok also published Effect Guidelines at launch. Every submitted effect is reviewed by its Trust and Safety team before release. The guidelines bar effects that promote colorism or negative stereotypes against protected groups, depict cosmetic surgery such as lip fillers, or encourage scrutiny of someone's appearance, and some effects, such as those depicting alcohol, may be kept out of the in-app Effect Tray.[11][6]
Monetization and exit from beta (2023)
On March 27, 2023, TikTok announced Effect House Branded Effects, which let brands work directly with effect creators on sponsored effects. TikTok's example was the "WordArt You" effect made for Microsoft 365 by Effect House creators Eddy Adams and Jan Trejo with the agency Superdigital, which it said was used in more than 126,000 videos.[12] In May 2023 TikTok launched Effect Creator Rewards, a US$6 million fund that paid creators for widely used effects.[13]
Effect House left beta on August 30, 2023. In its announcement TikTok said that since version 1.0, effects made by the community had inspired more than 21 billion videos with more than 8.6 trillion views, and that the official Effect House Discord server had more than 400,000 members. The same post counted more than 20 releases in the previous year, more than 50 templates and more than 120 visual scripting nodes.[7][14]
On November 16, 2023, TikTok made a mobile effect editor available globally inside the TikTok app (version 32.1 on Android, 32.0 on iOS). It offers templates, more than 2,000 assets, and triggers such as tapping the screen, smiling and winking, so that users can build effects without the desktop software.[15] Effect House's own FAQ says that template-based creation on mobile is open to all TikTok creators, while building an effect from scratch on mobile is limited to select regions.[16] At its Open House developer conference in late 2023, TikTok announced that creators could produce Branded Effects for advertisers that buy them from TikTok for Business; its documentation says brands can partner with any effect creator or agency to produce them.[17]
Generative AI and agent tools (2024-2026)
Version 4.4.0 (August 2, 2024) added a way to generate custom effects by chatting with an AI assistant. Version 5.0.0 (July 17, 2025) added a Video Model to the AI Editor that turns still images into animated effects; it is limited to creators with Platinum or Diamond badges.[4][18] Version 5.13.0 (July 29, 2026) introduced Ask AI, which connects a third-party AI coding agent installed on the creator's computer to an open project. The documentation names Claude Code, Codex and Cursor as examples. The agent can add and configure scene objects, write APJS TypeScript scripts, import or generate assets, and check its work with Preview panel screenshots and script logs. It does not create visual scripting graphs, and connecting an agent shares project files and prompts with that agent's provider.[4][19] With version 5.14.0 (August 26, 2026), Create with AI, which generated a starting effect from a single prompt, was withdrawn in favor of Ask AI, and the Lip Sync model was removed from the AI Editor.[4][19]
Features
Tracking and AR
World-anchored AR in Effect House uses an "AR camera", which is an ordinary Camera object with a Device Tracker component. The Device Tracker reports the device's position and orientation and the horizontal surface in the scene. It has three tracking modes: World, with six degrees of freedom; Orientation, with three degrees of freedom (rotation only); and Surface, which keeps an object on the tracked plane.[20] A Target Tracker component triggers content when the camera detects a chosen real-world image.[21]
Body-related tracking includes the Hand Tracker object, which follows one hand at a time, and a 3D Hand Tracker component that binds hand skeleton keypoints (wrist, palm and each finger joint and tip) to the bones of a rigged 3D model.[22][23] Later releases added a Depth Texture with algorithmically predicted depth (version 3.6.0), 2D body keypoint and pose-detection nodes and a Pet Face Tracker for cats or dogs (version 4.9.0), and Left Ear and Right Ear anchors on the Face Binding component (version 4.13.0).[4]
Authoring tools
Effect House uses a panel layout with Hierarchy, Assets, Inspector, Scene and Preview panels. Objects in the Hierarchy are sorted into render groups, each with its own camera, and the order of the groups sets the drawing order.[24] Interactivity is built with a node-based visual scripting editor or with scripts. Version 5.0.0 opened the APJS scripting interfaces for the Material, Physics3D and Script components and added a Console panel for runtime logs.[4] Other tools include a node-based Material Editor, a Visual Effects Editor for GPU particle simulations (version 4.6.0), 2D and 3D physics, cloth and soft-body simulation, a Timeline editor with keyframes (version 5.0.0), and an Asset Library of ready-made 3D models, materials and scripting assets.[4][7] Creators preview an effect inside the application or send it to the TikTok app with a QR code or an inbox link.[24][4]
The documentation includes a guide for creators moving from Snap's Lens Studio. It maps Lens Studio terms to Effect House ones, for example Shader Graph to Material Editor, VFX Graph to the Visual Effects Editor, and Face Paint to Face Mask.[24]
Publishing requirements
Submitted effects go through an automated performance test and a QA review. The limits are an effect package of no more than 8 MB and images of no more than 1,024 x 1,024 pixels. Static meshes can have up to 200,000 triangles, skinned meshes 120,000 and meshes with blendshape animation 60,000.[25] TikTok's FAQ says that most effects are reviewed within one business day.[2] Effects rely on WebGL, and the documentation warns that some lower-end Android phones cannot run them. It names the Samsung Galaxy J3, LG Leon H324, Huawei Honor 4X and Cubot J3 as examples of unsupported devices.[25]
Effect Creator Rewards
TikTok launched Effect Creator Rewards on May 16, 2023, with a US$6 million fund. At launch, an effect earned US$700 once it was used in 500,000 unique videos within 90 days of publication, plus US$140 for each further 100,000 videos in that window. The program was open in the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.[13] An update on October 3, 2023 added 14 countries and replaced the 500,000-video entry requirement with the Gold badge level (five published effects, at least three of them used in 1,000 videos each). It also lowered the per-effect threshold to 200,000 videos and moved to a variable payout rate.[26]
A revised structure took effect on July 3, 2024. Under it, an effect earns rewards on qualified video publishes in its first 30 days. Game, randomizer and most other effects start collecting after 5,000 unique public videos; makeup and green screen effects need 100,000; AI-generated effects are not eligible. Payouts are capped at US$14,000 per effect and US$50,000 per creator per month. Only effects made in the desktop application count, not effects built in the TikTok app. Creators must be at least 18 and based in one of 53 listed regions.[27][17] Since October 16, 2024, rewards, badges and challenges have been managed in a Rewards Center inside the desktop application.[27][28]

Reception
When the public beta opened, TechCrunch wrote that the launch put TikTok in closer competition with Snap and Meta, which already had AR creation tools for their apps.[6] Writing in Inverse, Annie Rauwerda said the tool's user experience was "very similar" to that of Lens Studio and Spark AR. She called reviewing each filter "quite the undertaking" for a platform that already struggled with moderation, citing an AR filter designer's account of blackface filters on Instagram.[29] In a 2023 arXiv preprint cataloging AR and VR development tools, Jasmine Roberts listed Effect House among "ecosystem-specific creation platforms", next to Lens Studio.[30]
After Meta announced in August 2024 that its Spark AR platform would shut down on January 14, 2025, Tubefilter named Snap and TikTok as the alternatives for effect creators, noting that both pay the creators of their most-used effects.[9]
