Dungeons of Eternity is a cooperative fantasy action role-playing virtual reality game developed and published by Othergate, a studio founded in 2021 by former Oculus developers. It released on the Meta Quest Store for the Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro on October 5, 2023, at a price of US $29.99, with an optional enhanced-visuals mode for the Meta Quest 3.[1][2] A PC VR version for SteamVR followed on September 11, 2025, alongside the game's largest content update, with cross-play and save transfer between the Quest and Steam versions.[3][4][5]
Players explore randomly generated dungeons assembled from hundreds of hand-built chambers, fight monsters with physics-based melee weapons, bows and magic staffs, and collect randomized loot, either alone or in online co-op. The game launched with three-player co-op and was expanded to four players in December 2024.[6][7]
UploadVR gave the game its highest "Essential" rating and named it Best New Multiplayer VR Game of 2023, and Road to VR gave it a UI design award in its 2023 game of the year coverage.[2][8][9]
Gameplay
Dungeons of Eternity is played in first person with tracked motion controllers. Each run takes place in a dungeon that the game assembles at random from a pool of pre-built chambers set in crypts, ruined castles and caverns, with puzzles, traps and secret rooms between the combat encounters.[6][10] Othergate describes the pool as "hundreds of different Chambers"; the pre-order announcement on the Meta Quest Blog used the same figure, and later updates added further batches of chambers (over 20 in December 2023, over 25 in May 2024 and over 30 in September 2025).[6][11][3]
Combat is physics based. Melee weapons (swords, maces, daggers and axes) holster at the waist; ranged weapons, shields and magic staffs sit on the back. Two-handed longswords were added in May 2024 and spears in October 2024, and crossbows are also available. Axes can be thrown and pulled back with a magnetic grab, spears can be thrown, and blocking an enemy swing parries it without a separate input.[2][12][3][13] There are no character classes; the player's build comes from the weapons carried and from stat upgrades to an "Exosuit", and any two one-handed items can be dual-wielded. In GamingTrend's review, swing force affected the damage dealt.[14][10] UploadVR counted more than 15 monster types at launch, from skeletons to floating abominations, and noted that enemy numbers scale with the size of the party.[2]
The game launched with three modes: Dungeon Raid, a conventional crawl through the dungeon; Soul Harvest, a horde mode; and Crystal Hunt, in which the party defends a central room.[1][2] A Sandbox arena mode for custom encounters was added in October 2024, and an experimental four-player PvP Deathmatch inside the Sandbox in December 2024.[3][7] Difficulty is selected by the host before a run; a Tier 7 "Nightmare" difficulty was added in May 2024, and since January 2025 playing above the recommended level pays bonus experience, gold and higher-tier weapon loot.[3][12]
Between runs, players meet in a shared hub called the Outpost. Rather than menu screens, the hub uses physical stations: the party picks a dungeon at a map table, crafts weapons at a workbench in an equipment room, and readies up by walking to a teleporter. Road to VR singled out this design, and the mini-maps that are physical spherical projectors the party finds in a level and sets down to share, for its 2023 UI design award.[9][14] Coins and chests found in dungeons pay for new weapon designs and avatar cosmetics; experience earned at the end of a raid unlocks items and Exosuit perks such as reduced fall damage. The level cap was 50 at launch and rose to 60 in May 2024.[2][12] Solo play is supported; a downed solo player gets a timed chance to use a potion or kill an enemy, and since December 2023 solo play and the tutorial work offline (an internet connection is still needed for cloud saves).[2][3] Comfort options include teleport and blink movement with strafing, and an Arachnophobia Mode (added in the summer of 2024) replaces spider enemies with friendlier-looking substitutes.[12][13]
Development
Othergate was founded in 2021. Its four founding members, Ryan Rutherford, Andrew Welch, Fabio Brasiliense and Pärtel Lang, are former Oculus Studios game designers with, by Road to VR's count, more than 30 combined years of VR game development. Their earlier work includes the Herobound and Dead and Buried series, the Dead and Buried Arena location-based demo shown at Oculus Connect 6 and the Tiny Castles hand-tracking demo. Meta described the studio at launch as a team of six core developers.[6][1] Dungeons of Eternity is the studio's first VR game.[6]
Rutherford told the Meta Quest Blog that the studio built the game around co-op because "we think people are looking for more cooperative games in general, but especially in VR", and that VR's strength is that it lets people "truly step into the role of the character".[1]
The game was announced on June 1, 2023, during Meta's Quest Gaming Showcase, as a one-to-three-player co-op dungeon crawler for Quest 2 due later in 2023.[6] Pre-orders opened on September 7, 2023, with a 10 percent discount and a "Prime Explorer" armor cosmetic set.[11] In November 2023 Othergate published a post-launch roadmap running through the end of 2024 that promised, among other things, an offline mode, difficulty settings, localization, an arachnophobia mode and new monsters, weapons and chambers, as well as a new quest mode and paid single-player DLC. The first group shipped through the updates listed below; the studio's update notes through January 2026 do not list a quest mode or single-player DLC.[3][15][16]
A Steam version was announced in September 2024 for the fourth quarter of that year, with cross-platform play between Quest and Steam through room codes. Othergate said the PC version would be Steam only for the time being, with no Rift store, PlayStation VR2 or Pico releases planned.[17] The Steam launch slipped first to the first quarter of 2025 and then to the summer; the studio said it "didn't want to just port the game from Quest" and was pairing the release with its biggest content update, with real-time lighting, volumetric effects and ambient occlusion added for PC.[7][18] The Steam version and the "Mythic Promotion" update released on September 11, 2025.[4][3]

Reception
UploadVR's Henry Stockdale gave Dungeons of Eternity the site's top "Essential" rating in a review updated on October 20, 2023, after playing on Quest 3. He called the combat "excellent, catering to many different playstyles", praised the progression system and the comfort options, and wrote that the game "quickly became one of the most enjoyable VR co-op experiences" he had reviewed. His complaints were minor: the Quest 3 visual boost had to be switched on manually, and the goal of Crystal Hunt was not explained clearly at first.[2] GamingTrend's Ron Burke scored it 80 out of 100 on Quest 2 and Quest 3, praising the physics combat and randomized dungeons but finding the content limited and the story "paper thin".[14] On OpenCritic the game has two listed critic reviews, both scoring 80.[21]
Player ratings have been high on both stores. On the Meta Horizon Store the game holds a 4.9 out of 5 rating from about 14,000 ratings, and on Steam its overall user reviews are rated "Very Positive" (90 percent of 899 reviews) as of September 2026.[22][5] In November 2023 Road to VR reported a 4.65 out of 5 user rating on the Quest store.[16]
Writing about the PC version on September 18, 2025, Stockdale said the game "remains one of the best co-op action games in VR, and that's only grown with its recent Steam release", with the real-time lighting and volumetric effects standing out in motion, though he noted aliasing near light sources at every graphics setting and an explosive-barrel blast radius that could wipe a party almost instantly. He tested the game on a Quest 3 over Virtual Desktop with an Intel Core i9-12900, 32 GB of DDR5 memory and a 16 GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super, and reported no performance problems at maximum settings.[23]
