Discovery: Rogue Planet is a story-driven science fiction first-person shooter for virtual reality, developed by Immersmind Studio, a product team of the Ukrainian game development company Stepico.[1] The player is a bounty hunter on Rogax, a hostile frontier planet, taking on missions across abandoned settlements, guarded cities, mines and swamps while uncovering the planet's secrets.[2][3] The game is built in Unreal Engine and is designed as a full single-player campaign rather than an arena or wave-based shooter, although it also includes a separate arena mode.[2][4]

It was released for Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S on the Meta Horizon Store on August 13, 2026, a week after its originally scheduled date of August 6, at a price of US$14.99.[5][3] Immersmind has stated that it plans a PC VR version in the future.[5]

Gameplay

The player controls a bounty hunter trying to make a living on Rogax, taking on risky jobs, fighting aggressive alien threats, and exploring dusty outposts, guarded cities, abandoned settlements, forgotten mines and swamps.[3][4] The campaign is split into missions. In UploadVR's review, each mission asks the player to complete a series of tasks such as finding an item, repairing broken equipment and eliminating enemies, and the first mission, clearing vermin from a farm, doubles as a tutorial for weapon handling and customization.[6] Story scenes between missions are told through comic-book-style 2D images on a black screen with voiced dialogue.[6] The player has a robot companion named Fifi.[6]

The studio lists a wide selection of weapons with upgrade options.[4] UploadVR counted more than twenty weapons, including knives, pistols, shotguns and rifles, with selectable attachments; weapons can also be recolored with spray cans found in stashes.[6] Inventory is carried on the player's virtual body: a sling over the left shoulder holds items, and a tablet serves as the map and is used to switch weapons.[6] The player also carries a multitool.[6] Weapons are reloaded through controller movements, and some mechanisms have to be repaired and activated directly by hand.[1]

Between some locations the player travels across the desert aboard the Discovery, a large vehicle that the studio describes as a mobile base.[4] UploadVR described the vehicle as a massive land rover controlled with two handles and reported that whole conversations take place during these drives.[6] Outside the campaign, an arena mode pits the player against endless waves of enemies.[4] The game also has collectibles and in-game achievements.[6]

Setting

According to Immersmind, Rogax was once an ocean world. About 1,000 years before the game, the gravity of a nearby planet evaporated its water and shattered its moon, leaving ice in orbit, gravitational anomalies, radioactive storms and gravity shifts. Rich in rare minerals, the planet is a mining hub and a sanctuary for criminals, smugglers and bounty hunters, and its cities are controlled by local clans. It also hosts gladiatorial combat arenas, which the studio says attract people who want to profit from the dangerous environment while avoiding the rule of the Union.[4]

Comfort and controls

The game uses stick-based locomotion with an optional teleport mode, and offers both snap and smooth turning. Every ladder also has a "grab here to teleport" option.[6] The Meta Horizon Store lists the game as single user, playable room-scale, standing or sitting with controllers, with a comfort level of "Comfortable". It requires 3.3 GB of storage, supports English only and does not need an internet connection.[3]

Development

Discovery: Rogue Planet began as an internal Unreal Engine demo made inside Stepico to show the company's technical and artistic capabilities in a science fiction setting. The demo grew into a pitch and then into a standalone VR project, and the Immersmind team was formed around it.[1] Immersmind's website lists the engine as Unreal Engine 5.[4]

The game was first conceived as a third-person science fiction shooter with monster-hunting elements. The team moved to VR after it connected with Meta and had the opportunity to develop for standalone VR; the finished game was made with support from Meta.[1] To fit the hardware limits of the Meta Quest 3, the team shifted from a realistic visual style toward stylization and removed some small objects and overloaded scenes. It also built several movement options, including free movement, seated play and teleportation. Ideas cut during development included an underwater level, a buggy, a more complex drone system and a cow boss.[1] The soundtrack was composed by Ukrainian musician Gordiy Starukh and uses the hurdy-gurdy as a main element.[1]

In the July 2026 announcement, executive producer Christopher Lee said: "Discovery: Rogue Planet is about making players feel like they are inside a dangerous sci-fi frontier."[2]

Release

The Meta Horizon Store listing went live with an August 2026 release window, and on July 17, 2026 Immersmind and Stepico announced an August 6 release for Meta Quest 3.[7][2] The press release named Meta Quest and SteamVR as platforms, but UploadVR could not find a Steam listing at the time.[7] On August 6 the game's store listing disappeared for several days; when UploadVR contacted the developer, it said there had been an issue with the storefront, and the game launched on August 13.[5]

Platform Store Release date Launch price

PC VR No store listing found as of July 2026[7] Planned, no date announced[5] Not announced

As of September 2026 the store lists version 1.0.3744 and an age rating of 12+ for moderate violence.[3]

Reception

UploadVR gave the game three out of five stars. Its review compared it to the linear, story-based first-person shooters of the late 1990s and early 2000s, and said that the retro formula "still holds up, flaws and all".[6] The reviewer praised the variety of weapons and biomes and the level design, including its verticality, and reported no performance issues. The review criticized enemy AI that simply runs at the player, the graphics, weak weapon sound and what it called "grab jank" caused by the placement of body-mounted items. It was also critical of the story delivery, in which the player stands still through several minutes of static images that the reviewer said looked prompt-generated, with stilted voice acting. The reviewer said the game uses "a liberal dose of generative AI" but stated that the score was not reduced for its inclusion. UploadVR put the campaign length at four to five hours and called the US$14.99 price appropriate for the content.[6]

On the Meta Horizon Store the game held an average user rating of 4.0 out of 5 from 41 ratings in September 2026.[3]
