DEXED is a virtual reality rail shooter developed and published by Ninja Theory. It uses paired fire and ice weapons, with scoring based on targeting enemies of the opposite element.[4][1] The HTC Vive release came from an internal studio game jam and used Unreal Engine 4.[3]
The Steam edition was released on 26 September 2016. The PlayStation VR edition followed on PlayStation 4, with the US store recording 31 January 2017.[1][2] Ninja Theory's own game catalog also identifies DEXED as a 2016 release.[5]
Features
Targeting and scoring
Fire damages ice enemies, and ice damages fire enemies. Players can mark multiple targets before firing, with successful combinations increasing the score multiplier. Ninja Theory's account of the PlayStation VR edition describes this dual-weapon targeting as the main interaction.[4]
A contemporary PC review describes holding a controller's trigger while moving its aiming cursor over targets, then releasing the trigger to fire at the marked enemies. Targets can be canceled before firing. That review reports that hitting an enemy with its own element causes a retaliatory shot; fire hits reduce the player's score over time, while ice hits temporarily prevent scoring.[6] A separate PC hands-on account also describes the same-element penalty and use of the shield to block the resulting attack.[7]
The original PC levels follow a fixed route. A review first published in September 2016 describes four themed stages, with jungle, underwater, fire and snow environments, followed by a boss encounter. It reports three difficulty settings for those stages.[6] Epic's release account likewise describes four worlds and a final boss.[3]
Modes
| Mode | Documented behavior |
|---|---|
| Challenge | Stage-based shooting along a fixed route, with scores and repeat attempts at different difficulties.[6][7] |
| Arcade | An endless arena mode with enemies approaching from all sides. Play ends when the life bar reaches zero. The developer's update description includes shields, detonating enemies and global and friends leaderboards.[8] |
| Zen | Guided tours through the Challenge environments without enemies. The developer's December update also describes removing target markers in this mode.[4][8] |
Arcade and Zen were additions after the initial release. In a 5 December 2016 update post, Ninja Theory reported both modes available without an additional charge, together with Oculus Rift and Touch support and an automatic camera-rotation toggle.[8]
The Steam edition lists single-player play and eighteen Steam Achievements.[1] The creator's materials describe global and friends leaderboards for comparing scores.[4][8]
Development
DEXED originated in an internal Ninja Theory game jam. Epic's September 2016 account describes ten teams, each given one month to make a game with Unreal Engine 4. After the studio played the resulting projects, DEXED was selected for release. Its eight-person team received two more months to develop and polish it.[3]
The same account identifies DEXED as Ninja Theory's first VR title. In the studio's later PlayStation article, Fran Mead describes the shooting design as inspired by Panzer Dragoon.[3][4]
