Broken Spectre is a single-player virtual reality cosmic horror adventure game developed and self-published by Games by Stitch, the independent game studio of the Toronto company Stitch Media. The player controls Casey, who returns to Coldblood Mountain in northwest Canada to look for her father, a biologist who disappeared there 25 years earlier. The game was designed around hand tracking, with a small set of hand gestures used to move, handle objects and climb, although controllers can also be used.[1][2][3]

The game was released for Meta Quest headsets on June 21, 2023, and on Steam on August 19, 2023.[4][1] Its executive producers include Mike Monello, a producer of The Blair Witch Project (1999), and the developer's store description calls the game "inspired by the works of John Carpenter and H.P. Lovecraft".[4][2][1] A Director's Cut with updated graphics, smoother interactions and quality-of-life changes was released for Meta Quest on October 20, 2025. It is a free upgrade for existing owners, and by October 21, 2025, it was also available on Steam and the Samsung Galaxy XR.[2][5]

Gameplay

Broken Spectre is played in first person. Casey is described by the developer as "a strong-headed adventurer haunted by her troubled family history". After she hears that her father may still be alive, she follows his trail up Coldblood Mountain, finds the results of his mutation experiments, and becomes trapped in the mountain's maze as the weather worsens and something stalks her. The game combines exploration with collecting clues, solving puzzles and performing cult rituals, and it moves between the mountain and Casey's childhood memories.[2][4]

A short tutorial at the start teaches five hand gestures, which are enough to play the whole game without a controller, although controllers can be used.[3] According to the developer, the gestures let the player explore the mountain, interact with objects and climb terrain.[2] Movement is point to point: in its hands-on with the Director's Cut, UploadVR described "snap turning and node-based movement" with "no free locomotion".[5] Rely on Horror estimated the game's length at 2 to 3 hours.[3]

The game opens with a content warning. Rely on Horror noted scenes of gore, mutilation and self-harm, and the Steam listing states that the game depicts violence, violence toward animals and self-harm.[3][1]

Development

Games by Stitch is the independent studio division of Stitch Media, which has operated since 2007. Its other games include Elsewhere Electric, Flow Weaver and Terrorarium.[2] The studio's first devlog for Broken Spectre, posted on May 18, 2021, described the project as a survival, psychological and cosmic horror game that would use the hand-tracking feature of the Oculus Quest 2, and said the team planned to recruit playtesters for an alpha build within a couple of months. The game's itch.io page lists Unity among its tags.[6]

The press kit credits Evan Jones, Mike Monello and Nick Braccia as executive producers, Michael Smilovitch as game designer, Jeffrey Flores as art director, Shane Brandon as technical director, and Heather Jackson and Stefan Grambart as narrative designers. Game audio was produced by Level Curve.[2] The studio describes the game as made "in collaboration with Michael Monello and Nick Braccia, makers of The Blair Witch Project".[2] The press kit lists the Canada Media Fund and Ontario Creates among the project's partners and states that it was made possible in part by the Government of Canada. The Google Play listing credits the same three bodies for their support, and the Steam listing names them in its publisher field.[2][7][1]

Hand tracking was a deliberate choice for the horror. Executive producer Evan Jones said in June 2023: "We saw the potential for hand-tracking and doubled down on it. Using your hands directly amplifies body horror so much. You pick up a knife with your bare hands and you know you're going to do something terrible with it."[4]

Release

In March 2023 Games by Stitch released a teaser trailer for the game, whose announcement text highlighted the Quest 2's hand-tracking controls.[8] In May 2023 Adventure Game Hotspot reported that the game would be released that summer on the Oculus Quest Store for Meta Quest, Quest Pro and Quest 2 devices.[9] The June 21 release date was announced with a trailer that debuted at the UploadVR Summer Showcase.[4]

On Steam, the game is listed as VR-only for Windows 10 (64-bit), with "Oculus devices only" under VR support and a note that it has only been tested on Meta Quest headsets. The Steam version supports English and French with full audio, plus Simplified Chinese, Latin American Spanish, German and Korean.[1]

The Director's Cut updated the 2023 release. UploadVR reported that it added "clear and welcome visual improvements" but "doesn't include new playable content", and that it was out on Quest, Galaxy XR and Steam, with a free upgrade for owners of the original.[2][5][10] The Galaxy XR version is sold on Google Play, where Stitch Media lists it as "Broken Spectre XR".[10][7]

Reception

OpenCritic lists two critic reviews of the original release, both scoring 9/10.[11] Rely on Horror found the hand-tracking controls "very responsive and intuitive" and wrote that the gore and self-harm scenes created "a feeling of genuine horror" without relying on jump scares. Its main criticism was the visuals, which it said had "fairly low-poly models and low-res textures".[3] SVG also gave the Quest 2 version 9/10, writing that the hand tracking offered "a level of responsiveness and intuitiveness that is rarely successful in most VR games" and that the game "redefines the VR horror genre". It listed hand tracking that "can sometimes be a bit finicky" and themes that "can be especially triggering" as drawbacks.[12]

UploadVR's 2025 hands-on with the Director's Cut was more mixed. The writer liked the story enough to want to keep playing, but said the design felt "a little dated in its overall approach". It found the game strongest in intimate indoor scenes such as an RV and a log cabin, and called the node-based movement off-putting in open environments.[5]

Awards

The game won VR Experience of the Year at the 2023 AIXR XR Awards.[13] It was nominated for Best Immersive Experience - Fiction at the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards.[14] In an October 2023 announcement on Steam, the developer also listed a shortlisting for Best Immersive Game at Raindance Immersive 2023, a shortlisting for Player's Choice Best Horror Game of 2023 at The Horror Game Awards, Best Video Game at Haunted House Fear Fest 2023, and Best in VR at the Drop Horror Film Festival 2023.[15]
