"BUTTS: The VR Experience" is a short animated VR App created by animator Tyler Hurd, first released for the Oculus Rift DK2 in January 2015.[1] It was also made available free of charge for the HTC Vive, Google Cardboard and Samsung Gear VR; the Gear VR version was reported on 29 January 2016.[2] A Steam listing, credited to Gentle Manhands as developer and publisher, was released on 3 February 2016 as a free, VR-only, single-player title for Windows with SteamVR support.[3]

Reviewed 9 October 2026. Checked the lead, release dates, platforms, credits, Proto Awards nomination and Steam details against the two Road to VR articles and the Steam store data and review summary (appid 439260). About review dates.

Overview

The work is a roughly two-minute animated short about a character who cheers up another by pulling confetti from their rear end. Hurd described the starting idea that way in an interview with Road to VR.[1] It began as a 2D animated film and was ported to virtual reality with Drew Skillman and Patrick Hackett of Skillman & Hackett, with audio by Matt Englund of WE Sound Labs.[1] Road to VR described the animation as "Ren and Stimpy-style" and noted that Hurd, a former Double Fine Productions animator, made it while freelancing.[2]

The experience is passive viewing rather than gameplay. The Steam page recommends sitting on the floor in the center of the play space and states that no controllers are needed.[3]

Reception

The Steam listing states that the work was an official selection of Cannes NEXT in 2016 and of the Kaleidoscope World Tour in 2016 and the Kaleidoscope North American Tour in 2015; these claims are made by the developer.[3] Road to VR reported that it was nominated for "Most Innovative" at the 2014 Proto Awards.[1] Steam user reviews were rated "Very Positive" as of October 2026, with 86 of 106 reviews positive.[4]
