Zombie Riot (promoted as ZR: Zombie Riot) is a wave-based zombie survival shooter for VR developed and published by PlaySide VR, the VR division of the Australian mobile developer PlaySide Studios. It was released on Steam for SteamVR on 25 May 2017 and is listed as a Windows game that requires a VR headset and tracked controllers, with the HTC Vive named as the target headset.[1] The game was first announced in 2016 as a title for Oculus Touch.[2] By October 2017 it was also available through Viveport Subscription.[3]

Reviewed 9 October 2026. Checked Steam app 639460 (developer, publisher, date, VR support, review counts) and the UploadVR and VIVE Blog sources for the added statements About review dates.

Overview

Players face waves of zombies from a first-person view, using tracked motion controllers to pick up objects in the environment and use them as weapons. The Steam listing names weapons including dual pistols, a sniper rifle, a spiked baseball bat, a Tesla assault rifle, tennis rackets, chainsaws and grenades, which are bought in the game.[1] Pre-release coverage also described a crafting system in which items can be combined into new weapons without menus, and a bright, cartoon-like art style with a toned-down look compared with the gore-heavy Dead Space series, on which some of the studio's developers had worked at Electronic Arts and Visceral Games.[2][4]

The Steam page lists SteamVR support as standing only, with a single-player mode and Steam leaderboards.[1] A VIVE blog post from October 2017 states that the game has a story-driven component and an endless mode.[3]

Reception

Steam user reviews were rated Mostly Positive as of October 2026, based on 92 reviews (70 positive and 22 negative).[5] In a 2016 hands-on preview of an early build, UploadVR's David Jagneaux found the shooting and melee controls accurate and intuitive.[4]
