YVR 2 is a virtual reality head-mounted display released in 2022. It is a standalone headset made by the Chinese company YVR, which later renamed itself Play For Dream.[1] YVR announced the headset on 12 July 2022 at an official price of CN¥4,999, with pre-orders opening the same day on Tmall, JD.com and Douyin in China.[2][3]

The YVR 2 uses pancake lenses instead of the Fresnel lenses common in earlier standalone headsets, and runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 chip with 8 GB of LPDDR5 memory.[2] YVR marketed it as the first mass-produced standalone VR headset with pancake optics.[2][4] It was the company's second headset after the YVR 1.[5]

History

The launch press release described YVR, founded in 2020, as a brand of the Play For Dream group (玩出梦想集团). It said YVR had unveiled its first headset, the YVR 1, on 28 December 2021, and YVR 2 on 12 July 2022.[2] Road to VR later described the company as established in 2020 under the name YVR.[5] At the launch, YVR named Qualcomm, Pegatron, 3M, BYD, JDI and O-Film among its partners.[2] Zhidx reported the CN¥4,999 figure as the starting price and listed 128 GB and 256 GB storage versions.[6]

In its first Tmall Singles' Day pre-sale, which opened on 24 October 2022 and ended on 31 October 2022, YVR offered the 256 GB version for CN¥2,999, a discount of up to CN¥2,200.[7]

The company later renamed itself Play For Dream. UploadVR reported the new name in June 2024, when the company revealed its Play For Dream MR headset at an event in Malaysia.[1] As of September 2026, the manufacturer's website still lists YVR 2 in its VR series, together with a YVR 2 Enterprise edition; its MR series lists the Play For Dream MR.[4]

Design

YVR said the design took its inspiration from aviator sunglasses. The front shell is made with a high-pressure forming composite process, and the body has a soft-touch coating that the company calls "Babyskin".[2] According to YVR, the pancake optical module is 20 mm thick, about 50 percent thinner than a traditional Fresnel optical module, and the whole headset is 42 mm thick.[2] Zhidx gave the weight as 630 g including the battery, and 108 g for each controller.[6] VR Tuoluo reported a net weight of 630 g from the JD.com product listing.[3] VR Tuoluo reported that the front "glasses" section weighs 350 g.[8]

The battery sits at the back of the head strap. YVR described a 3:2 weight balance with the battery at the rear, an adjustable rear cushion, a detachable magnetic foam face pad and a nose-bridge design that it said suits Asian face shapes. The headset can be used while wearing glasses.[2][9] A top strap loop is also provided for users who want extra support.[8]

YVR stated that YVR 2 was the only VR headset in China to have received both a Red Dot and an iF industrial design award.[2][7] The Red Dot database lists a 2022 Product Design award for a VR headset named "YVR D2" from Shanghai YVR Technology Co., Ltd., describing its rear-mounted battery, breathable face seal, adjustable rear pad and extra-wide face cover.[10]

Hardware

Display and optics

The headset has two 2.1-inch Fast-LCD panels with 1058 PPI and a 90 Hz refresh rate. Each eye has a resolution of 1600 x 1600 pixels.[3] A November 2022 teardown by VR Tuoluo identified the panels as JDI a-Si TFT-LCDs with a 4.5 ms gray-to-gray response time.[9]

The optics are two-element pancake lenses with a curved film. Pancake optics fold the light path by reflecting polarized light between lens elements, which shortens the distance needed between the display and the eyes.[9] YVR said the design reduces the edge blur, distortion and glare of Fresnel optics.[2] VR Tuoluo reported that the optical efficiency was said to be 19 percent.[8]

The launch specification gave the field of view as 95°.[2][3] The English product page on the manufacturer's current website instead lists a "103° Ultra-Wide FOV" and a "Binocular 4K-Class Experience". The same page lists "Adaptive IPD", which it describes as "crystal clear without manual adjustment".[4] YVR did not publish an interpupillary distance range in its launch materials.

Processor, memory and storage

YVR 2 uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 with 8 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128 GB or 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage.[2] The teardown found the Samsung LPDDR5 memory stacked directly on the XR2 chip and a 128 GB Western Digital UFS 3.1 storage chip. It also found a Qualcomm QCA6391 module supporting Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. Cooling uses a single heat pipe and a fan made by Sunon.[9]

Tracking and controllers

The headset uses YVR's own inside-out tracking algorithm for six degrees of freedom head and controller tracking. YVR stated that controller tracking covers 270 degrees horizontally and 210 degrees vertically.[2] Four tracking cameras sit at the corners of the front panel; the teardown attributed the camera modules to O-Film. The headset also has two TDK ICM-42688-P inertial measurement units, which the teardown described as a redundant pair, and a proximity sensor that detects when it is being worn.[9]

Each controller has a ring with 15 infrared LEDs used for tracking, a linear resonant actuator for haptic feedback, capacitive touch sensing and a rechargeable 600 mAh battery supplied by BYD.[9] YVR rated the controllers for 35 hours of continuous use and presented the built-in rechargeable battery as an alternative to the disposable batteries used by most controllers at the time.[2] The manufacturer lists a vibration frequency range of 50 Hz to 500 Hz for the controller motors.[4]

Battery, charging and audio

The 5300 mAh battery gives about 2.5 hours of continuous gaming, according to YVR.[2] The teardown found two 2625 mAh cells, with support for QC 4.0 and PD 3.0 charging at up to 27 W. The headset ships with a gallium nitride (GaN) charger of up to 65 W that can charge the headset and both controllers at the same time.[9] Stereo speakers are built into the head strap mounts.[9]

Software and content

YVR 2 runs YVR's own user interface. YVR said the interface uses a composite layer rendering technique to make menus sharper, and that the system includes a friends list, online status and voice chat for multiplayer games.[2]

At launch, YVR listed games including Arizona Sunshine and Zombieland VR: Headshot Fever, as well as creative and educational apps, and said the fitness app Punch would arrive in the third quarter of 2022.[2] By October 2022 the YVR store had more than 50 apps.[7] The manufacturer also offers a PC streaming assistant that it says lets users play Steam games on the headset.[4]

In September 2022 VR Tuoluo reported that YVR was investing in hand-gesture tracking and expected to add gesture recognition in a later software update.[8] YVR released its own gesture recognition feature on 9 June 2023, allowing YVR 2 users to click and grab without controllers; VR Tuoluo reported that the algorithm recognizes 22 hand key points with 26 degrees of freedom.[11]

Reception

In a report published in September 2022, VR Tuoluo said it had invited 100 consumers to try the headset for an average of about 20 minutes each. In the report, 94 percent said they were satisfied with comfort, more than 63 percent rated the image as very sharp, and 59 percent reported no dizziness. Some users with uncorrected myopia who did not wear glasses said the image could be clearer.[8] The outlet noted that its sample was limited and that the results were subjective.[8] Its November 2022 teardown concluded that YVR had used what it considered the best solutions then on the market for the headset's industrial design, optics and core components.[9]
