Woxter Neo VR100 is a virtual reality head-mounted display released in 2017. It was sold by the Spanish consumer electronics brand Woxter and is a standalone headset: it runs apps on its own hardware, with a built-in 5.5-inch screen, an octa-core processor and an Android 4.4-based operating system, so no smartphone or PC is needed.[1][2] Spanish technology sites reported the headset in January 2017 at a price of 179.99 euros, in blue and silver versions.[2][3]
Woxter no longer sells the Neo VR100. Its official store lists both color versions under "Productos Anteriores" (previous products).[1][4]
History
One-Tech described the Neo VR100 as Woxter's middle option between VR glasses that depend on a smartphone (Mobile VR) and headsets that connect to a computer (PC-Powered VR).[2] One-Tech and El Candelero Tecnológico covered the product on 5 January 2017, and other Spanish outlets reported the same launch price, colors and specifications.[2][5][6][3]
The EU declaration of conformity printed in the user manual is dated 10 November 2016. It names Quatrotec Electrónica, S.L., based in Leganés (Madrid), as the company behind the product, says the headset was made in China, and states that it complies with the European radio equipment directive 2014/53.[7] Woxter's store gave the blue model the reference MV26-212 and the silver model MV26-213.[1][4]
Design and hardware
Display and optics
The headset has one 5.5-inch IPS Full HD screen with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels.[1] According to the manual, this LCD is divided into two areas, one image for each eye, so that overlapping the images produces 3D pictures and video.[7] Woxter lists the lenses as 40 mm PMMA with an angle of up to 101 degrees.[1]
Two adjustments are available. A wheel on top of the headset adjusts the focus to the wearer's eyesight; the manual gives a vision adjustment range of 0 to 600 degrees. Two tabs on the underside set the distance between the lenses to remove double images, with an interpupillary distance range of 60 to 72 mm.[7]
Processor, memory and storage
Woxter specifies an octa-core processor running at 2 GHz, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of flash storage.[1][2] A card slot accepts microSD (TF) cards of up to 64 GB.[1] Woxter's product page and manual do not name the chipset.
Sensors and controls
Movement and orientation changes are detected by an accelerometer and a 9-axis G-sensor.[1][5] Woxter's software uses head movement to choose items: in the VR launcher, the wearer points at a target by turning the head and then presses the confirm button.[7]
There is no hand controller in the box. The headset is operated with buttons on its top edge: volume up and down, a menu button, directional buttons and OK, Back and Home buttons, plus a power button that is held for two to three seconds to switch on.[7]
Connectivity, audio and battery
The Neo VR100 has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, Micro USB and USB OTG.[1] The manual also lists a microphone and a red LED that blinks while the battery charges and turns off when charging is complete.[7]
Woxter's product page gives the battery as 4,000 mAh with up to 5 hours of use.[1] The user manual's feature list states "4.400 mA" instead. In the same manual, Woxter gives a charging time of about 5 to 8 hours at a room temperature of 23 degrees Celsius and a running time of 2 to 5 hours on a full charge, depending on use.[7]
Software
The operating system is based on Android 4.4 and adapted for 3D use, with access to the Google Play Store.[1] According to the manual, ten apps are preinstalled for video and image playback, panoramas, settings, file management, web browsing and YouTube, and more VR, 3D and 2D apps can be downloaded from the Play Store.[7] The system menu has sections for local media, an online cinema app, panoramic viewing, an online VR platform, images and tools.[7]
Woxter lists support for MPEG-2, H.264, H.265, AVI and MP4 video and for side-by-side (SBS) 3D video.[1]
Health and safety guidance
The manual recommends that children under 15 use the headset only for very short periods. It warns that some people may develop eye strain, fatigue, nausea or dizziness when viewing panoramic video, images or games, and advises taking short breaks.[7]
