Under the Canopy is a free 360-degree virtual reality documentary short about the Amazon rainforest, made by Conservation International and Jaunt VR. It was released on Steam on May 10, 2017, as a Steam 360 Video title that can be watched in a supported VR headset or on a desktop monitor. Jaunt, Inc is listed as both developer and publisher on Steam.[1] The film was covered in January 2017 in a report on virtual reality projects shown at the Sundance Film Festival.[2]

Reviewed 9 October 2026. Steam app 632280 details (developer, publisher, release date, running time, format, reviews) plus the Phys.org and Shorty Awards pages cited for the film's content, locations and award About review dates.

Overview

The film follows Kamanja, a member of the indigenous Trio community, through the rainforest canopy. It shows wildlife such as sloths and an anaconda, and presents the threats that deforestation poses to local communities and the forest.[2] The Steam listing describes a viewpoint that moves over treetops and into rivers.[1]

According to the Shorty Awards entry, the crew filmed in southern Suriname and in Ecuador's Yasuni National Park, using Jaunt ONE cameras suspended from cables between trees, with 3D-spatialized audio.[3] The Steam page lists a running time of 11 minutes and a stereo equirectangular video at 3840x3840 resolution.[1]

Reception

The film won a Gold Honor in the Environment and Sustainability category at the 2nd Annual Shorty Social Good Awards.[3] Steam user reviews were rated Mixed (17 reviews, 11 of them positive) as of October 2026.[1]
