The Price of Freedom is a short narrative adventure for SteamVR, developed by Construct Studio and published by Construct Studio Inc. It was released on Steam on 22 December 2016 for the HTC Vive and requires a room-scale play area.[1] UploadVR described it as "Episode Zero" of a planned episodic series, and reviews from 2016 and 2017 listed it as a free download lasting roughly 10 to 20 minutes.[2][3] The Steam page was still live in October 2026 and showed a purchase price.[1]
Overview
The player takes the role of Agent Zero, a CIA operative during the Cold War. The assigned target is Benjamin Miller, who is described as having entered CIA facilities and taken chemical weapons research. The Steam listing says the assignment becomes more troubling as the player learns Miller's reasons.[1]
Gameplay consists of exploring small rooms and handling objects such as documents, photographs and props, with simple puzzles solved through that exploration. The Ghost Howls review noted that standing-only play is not possible, and that menu functions are built into the environment, for example choosing the language by taking a pill.[3] UploadVR compared its focus on player choice to the original BioShock.[2] The cast includes Jason Douglas and Christopher Sabat, and the studio credits itself with the 360-degree VR film Imago.[1][2] The Steam page lists English and Traditional Chinese with full audio support.[1]
Reception
The Ghost Howls reviewer called it "one of the best VR experiences out there" and urged readers to download it.[3] UploadVR called it one of the most memorable VR demos it had tried.[2] Steam user reviews were rated Positive (44 of 48 reviews positive) as of October 2026.[4]
