Shil is a single-player first-person puzzle game with psychological horror elements, developed by OSM Games, an independent studio in Vilnius, Lithuania.[1] It was released for Meta Quest headsets on 8 October 2026 at US$14.99, EUR 13.99 and GBP 11.99.[2][3] The player moves through a damaged reconstruction of a human mind, guided by an AI companion, in a world drawn in a two-tone art style that hides paths, objects and enemies.[2] A version for Steam can be wishlisted, but as of 14 October 2026 its store page lists the release date as "To be announced".[4]
Shil is OSM Games' first virtual reality game.[2] UploadVR gave it four out of five stars and called it "one of the most engrossing, addictive VR games I have played all year".[3]
Gameplay
The player is trapped inside their own fractured mind and is tasked by an AI guide with recovering lost memories. Each level is a room that the player crosses from one end to the other by building a path, defeating enemies that are hard to see and moving objects to get past traps. Memories collected along the way play back as voiceovers that fill in the story and lead the player to question the motives of their character, the AI guide and other people in the character's life.[3] According to the developer, the story concerns corporate control and human imagination, mixes dry humour with psychological horror, and branches toward multiple endings as the player chooses paths and discovers "where obedience, curiosity or resistance leads".[2] UploadVR counted seven endings.[3]
Each room is drawn in two colours, black and one other colour.[3] OSM Games CEO Giedrius Tamulaitis said the team "stripped away almost everything players normally expect from a virtual world", including textures and lighting, so that "seeing and understanding are two very different things".[2] Paths, doorways, pillars and enemies share the same colours, so moving enemies appear only as silhouettes.[3]
Puzzles rely on a small set of tools. The player starts with a ball launcher that recolours pathways and other objects, which can make a hazard visible or hide it. In one early obstacle described by UploadVR, giant pistols fire one-shot-kill bullets across the path; recolouring a pistol to match the path also makes its bullets invisible against the floor. Later tools include magnets, which pull floating platforms closer and briefly freeze giant chopping knives, and slingshots, which are used against enemies and to move pillars in front of traps.[3] The developer's material calls the magnet a "magnet gun".[2] Each portal to a new room shows how many path branches and memories it contains, and an overall map shows what the player has missed. UploadVR also described a room-scale challenge modelled on the game Minesweeper.[3]
The game has a teleport option and a choice of snap or smooth turning with a motion vignette. UploadVR reported that a full run takes about an hour, depending on the player's speed, and that the branching paths and endings encourage repeat play.[3]
Development
OSM Games was founded in Vilnius. It first made mobile games, including the word game Kartuvės and the stop-motion vertical shooter Captain Badass, before building several virtual reality prototypes that led to Shil.[2][1] The studio's website says Kartuvės reached the top of the Lithuanian App Store charts and that Captain Badass was commercially unsuccessful.[1] The Steam store page lists the developers as OSM Games and Nuostabūs žaidimai, with OSM Games as publisher.[4]
In the September 2026 announcement, Tamulaitis said the studio's goal "from day one was to create a compelling, atmospheric puzzle game", and that it hoped players would return to find new paths and the hidden endings.[5]
Release
OSM Games announced the Quest release date on 24 September 2026.[5] UploadVR reported the announcement on 25 September and noted that the game could already be wishlisted on Quest and Steam.[6] The game launched on Meta Quest on 8 October 2026.[2][7] The Meta Horizon Store lists its genres as Adventure, Narrative and Puzzle.[8]
| Platform | Release | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta Quest | 8 October 2026 | US$14.99, EUR 13.99, GBP 11.99 | Released[2][8] |
| Steam (Windows, Linux) | To be announced | Not announced | Wishlist open; UploadVR lists PC VR as "coming soon"[4][3] |
The Steam page lists Windows and Linux system requirements, English audio and full controller support, but does not list VR headset support; its minimum requirements name integrated graphics.[4] The studio's website describes the game as "designed for both PC and VR".[1] The launch press release described the Steam launch date as "coming very soon".[2]
Reception
In his review for UploadVR, played on Meta Quest 3, Mike Johnson gave Shil four out of five stars and called it "a testament to the power of great game design". He wrote that the game strips the world "down to next to nothing in a two-tone art style that is disturbingly effective" instead of relying on lighting and music for scares, and compared it to "a more horror-leaning version of Superhot VR". He described it as "not outright scary", but said "the way it constantly messes with your head is consistently distressing".[3] He also judged it unlikely to cause motion sickness "for any but the motion-sensitive of players".[3]
