RETNE is a free-to-play, single-player adventure experience for SteamVR that uses room-scale tracked controllers. It was developed and published by VRNI Ltd and Kainos and released on Steam on 2 August 2017.[1] The experience was shown at South by Southwest in March 2017 and was built for the HTC Vive.[2]
Overview
The player takes the role of a tourist visiting "VR Land" and is accompanied by a guide character named Lil Mo, voiced by actor Michael Smiley.[2] The Steam listing presents it as a self-guided tour of attractions that the player has to work to reach.[1]
According to a 2018 guest article by Deepa Mann-Kler, who directed and produced the project, the animation was done by Enter Yes and the spatial audio was designed by David Baxter, and the player performs quests to reveal hidden secrets and special effects.[2] The Steam page lists the game as VR only, with support for tracked controllers, and requires a room-scale play area of 2.5 m by 2 m.[1]
Reception
Steam user reviews were rated Very Positive as of October 2026, with 80 percent of 50 reviews positive.[1]
