Phr00t's Software is the game-development and publishing name used by the developer known as Phr00t. Its work includes procedural games with virtual reality (VR) support and open-source development tools. The catalog includes the action role-playing game 5089: The Action RPG, the combat racing game Spermination and the music game PerformVR.[1][2][3]

The developer also created jMonkeyVR, a Java library for adding VR to jMonkeyEngine applications, and FocusEngine, a fork of the Stride/Xenko game engine. These projects expose VR features to other developers as well as supporting Phr00t's own games.[4][5]

History and development approach

The developer's earlier action RPGs included 3079 and 3089. In October 2014, Phr00t's Software was seeking crowdfunding for 4089: Ghost Within, with Oculus Rift compatibility among the announced features. The project used a low-polygon visual style. Artist Swawa3D told Indie Retro News that the choice reduced complexity and allowed the team to concentrate on gameplay and performance on older hardware.[6] The released game places stealth, combat and user-created rooms within a procedurally generated spacecraft.[7]

In a July 2015 guest article for Road to VR, Phr00t described moving beyond an Oculus-specific development approach after the announcement of the HTC Vive. The account presented OpenVR and jMonkeyEngine as a way to reach multiple headset ecosystems. Its demonstrated configuration used a Rift as an extended desktop display, with tests on Windows 8.1 and Linux and particular pre-consumer Oculus SDK versions. The article's broader headset compatibility was a development aim, rather than a test of every headset named in it.[8]

By November 2016, Razer's announcement of OSVR content on Steam listed 4089, 5089, Frantic Freighter and Spermination under Phr00t's Software. The announcement grouped titles available or coming to OSVR; it was a contemporary platform catalog rather than a guarantee of compatibility with later hardware.[9]

Procedural generation takes different forms across the catalog. In 5089 it generates terrain, enemies, equipment and quests; in FPS Infinite it generates exploration levels and the locations of progression items; PerformVR instead analyzes user-supplied music to generate dance patterns and visuals.[10][11][3]

Games and VR support

Many releases support both headset and desktop play, but their input requirements differ. 4089 and the original Spermination list SteamVR with keyboard and mouse input, while 5089 supports tracked controllers and seated, standing or room-scale play. Frantic Freighter and StratoBash also provide desktop controls alongside their controller-based VR modes.[7][12][10][13][14]

The following selected releases are credited to Phr00t's Software on their individual Steam listings. Years refer to the store's listed release year. VR descriptions summarize the publisher's documented modes and requirements, rather than independent testing on every supported device.[15]

Game Release year Scope and documented VR mode
4089: Ghost Within 2015 Stealth action RPG with a generated spacecraft and a content editor. Optional VR; the listing names SteamVR and keyboard/mouse input and retains historical Rift DK2 compatibility notes.[7]
Spermination 2015 Combat racing with procedurally generated environments and equipment purchases. Optional VR; its SteamVR requirements specify keyboard and mouse.[12]
5089: The Action RPG 2016 Open-world action RPG with generated quests and equipment, building, dialogue and two-player co-op. Optional VR with tracked-controller and room-scale support.[10]
Frantic Freighter 2016 Space delivery game involving ship repairs and spare parts. Optional VR with tracked controllers; desktop play is also supported.[13]
StratoBash 2017 Combat and puzzles on floating islands. VR players throw weapons with tracked controllers and move with a dash-teleport system; keyboard/mouse play is also available.[14]
ROMBIE 2018 Action RPG with generated terrain and modular robots. Optional VR; the publisher identifies Windows as the platform on which the VR features were tested.[16]
Adapt or Perish 2019 Strategy game with customizable units and buildings in a generated world. Optional VR; the requirements list SteamVR with standing or room-scale play.[17]
FPS Infinite 2020 Exploration shooter with generated levels, enemies and abilities that open new areas. Optional VR; the publisher specifies 64-bit Windows 10 and SteamVR for VR play.[11]
8089: The Next Action RPG 2021 Open-world action RPG with generated quests and configurable equipment. Built for VR while retaining keyboard/mouse play; uses OpenXR, with SteamVR identified as the supported runtime and VR support limited to Windows.[18]
PerformVR 2022 Dance and karaoke game that analyzes the player's own music. Listed as VR Only, with tracked controllers and OpenXR for standing or room-scale play.[3]
Spermination: Cream of the Crop 2022 Combat racing sequel with selectable leagues and configurable equipment. Optional VR using OpenXR with SteamVR as its runtime.[19]
System Escape 2023 Stealth escape game with generated facility floors. Designed for VR and also playable without a headset; the requirements name OpenXR with SteamVR as runtime.[20]
Superbot Arena 2023 Robot arena combat with player-defined gestures for activating abilities. Its VR combat requires motion controllers on Windows x64; bot creation and editing also work in desktop mode.[21]

The older 4089 and Spermination listings still describe pre-consumer Oculus software configurations. Their specific historical SDK notes should be read separately from the more general SteamVR labels on the same pages. In contrast, the 8089 listing explicitly limits supported VR operation to Windows and SteamVR as the OpenXR runtime, even though a Linux desktop build is provided.[7][12][18]

PerformVR supplies generated choreography and karaoke analysis but does not include music. Its developer credits Vamp plugins from Queen Mary University of London. The store description acknowledges that automatically extracted vocal notes can include non-vocal material.[3] In the December 2024 v1.31 announcement, Phr00t reported replacing the custom-song dance-generation system and updating the game to newer FocusEngine and OpenXR components.[22]

Open-source VR development

jMonkeyVR

jMonkeyVR adds a VR application layer to the Java-based jMonkeyEngine. Its README instructs developers to use Phr00t's engine build and SteamVR, and identifies 5089, Spermination and 4089 as commercial users. Applications can enter headset mode when VR hardware is detected or use a normal display otherwise. The library also provides positioning for in-game interface panels and a cursor within that interface.[4]

The library includes an instanced rendering option that draws the stereo views in a single rendering pass. Its documentation requires suitable vertex shaders and material definitions, notes that many standard engine materials are not prepared for this mode, and warns of conflicts with other scene instancing.[4] Valve's SteamVR Hardware presentation identifies jMonkeyVR as an example of OpenVR use by an open-source engine.[23]

FocusEngine

FocusEngine is an open-source C# engine fork based on Stride/Xenko. The repository describes a development branch intended to deliver fixes and features needed by Phr00t's games, and cautions that its newest changes may be unstable. It identifies FPS Infinite, 8089, PerformVR and Spermination: Cream of the Crop as games using the engine.[5]

Its documented changes include OpenXR integration, frame-rate management, headset resolution detection, configuration of which hand an object follows and VR interaction with user interfaces. The fork primarily uses Vulkan and documents changes to rendering, physics, object pooling and the depth buffer. Its README also describes an effect that reduces the field of view in VR.[5]

Later projects and status

Beyond Steam, Phr00t released Your Battle Royale on itch.io, where the page credits Phr00t's Software as publisher and lists a November 2024 release. The single-player game uses computer-controlled opponents and configurable game rules. Its VR features include holding weapons with two hands, aiming through scopes and arm-swing running. The supplied portable package is a Windows executable; the page describes Linux operation through user reports rather than a separate native Linux executable.[24]

Ride4EVR is listed separately as a Windows driving prototype with procedurally generated terrain, weather and several driving modes. The page documents optional PC VR through SteamVR, including a lean-steering mode.[25]

On the official website checked in October 2026, Phr00t described being "generally retired" while retaining links to games and open-source projects.[1]
