PLANNES (Japanese: プラネス) is a VR App, a zero-gravity tennis game for PC virtual reality headsets developed and published by Tricol Co., Ltd., a VR game studio based in Tokyo.[1][2] The player travels by spaceship to a series of planets and plays each planet's representative, using a pair of rackets to knock a ball into the crystals floating behind the opponent.[3]
The game was one of the 53 launch titles for the Oculus Touch controllers and went on sale on the Oculus Store on 6 December 2016, followed by an HTC Vive version on Steam a few days later.[4][5] Besides the single-player campaign, it has a local versus mode in which a second player on the same PC plays on the monitor with a gamepad, and an online mode added in 2017.[2][6] As of October 2026, Steam marks the game as no longer available on its store.[2]
Gameplay
PLANNES is a tennis-like sport played in zero gravity. Five crystals float behind each player, and a match is won by destroying all five of the opponent's crystals; a crystal breaks when the ball hits it.[3][5] The player holds a racket in each hand and can bounce shots off the walls of the court to reach the crystals.[3] In the story, the player lands on planets in a spaceship and faces each planet's national team; MoguraVR described five planets and 50 stages in total, with distinctive opponents and stage gimmicks such as obstacles.[3][2]
Winning matches earns points, which are spent to unlock new rackets.[2] The rackets have different abilities: according to MoguraVR, some have their own special moves while others cover a wider area, so choosing a racket to suit the opponent matters.[3] Weekly ASCII, reporting on the announcement, wrote that the items used as rackets include swords, axes and shields.[7] A "Wind Racket" was added in an update in December 2017.[8]
Multiplayer
In the local VS mode, two people play on one PC: one wears the headset and uses motion controllers, while the second player uses the PC monitor and a Gamepad.[2][3] Tricol's product page described the versus mode as unusual for a VR game.[5] Version 1.2.0, released in October 2017, added an online match mode played over the Internet (called NETWORK PLAY in the store description), raised the points awarded for a win by about five times, and added Korean language support.[6][2] Steam lists the game as supporting online PvP, shared or split screen PvP and cross-platform multiplayer.[2]
Development
Tricol Co., Ltd. (株式会社トリコル) is a VR content developer in Shinagawa, Tokyo. Its company history lists the Oculus Touch and HTC Vive releases of PLANNES in December 2016, a month after the HTC Vive release of its ramen shop game Counter Fight in November 2016.[1]
Tricol announced PLANNES with Oculus Touch support at Oculus Game Day, a press event that Oculus held at its Japan office on 17 November 2016. It was one of six Touch titles from five Japanese developers presented there.[9][7] MoguraVR reported the release of Tricol's announcement trailer on 5 December 2016, the day before the Touch launch.[3][10]
In June 2017 Tricol announced an investment from an investment fund operated by Global Brain; MoguraVR's report on the funding named Counter Fight and PLANNES as the studio's games.[11]
